Apparently not too long after I raved over System of a Down here in this thread, they announced a new album! I'm super excited, as this is their first album in almost twelve years! I'm interested to see which direction their music will take after this long.

F♯ A♯ ∞ by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Oh. Your. God.
I wish I had known about this album years ago, now it's easily one of my favorite albums when I want something to set a specific mood. No question the best post-rock album I've listened to so far. It's equal parts beautiful and apocalyptic. And that spoken-word part of "The Dead Flag Blues"...holy crow, does that get under my skin. Recommended to anyone with a pulse and an open mind.

It's been many years since I've listened to that album, probably over a decade. I do remember playing it (and a bunch of other post-rock) on the team jukebox server in ~2003 when there were a few of us in a large office, and my colleagues taking note of what it was.

Dunno if OSTs are allowed here, but I've been listening to the Bubblegum Crisis soundtrack pretty much non-stop lately after watching the original anime. I love how each episode got its own complete (short) album of music. Tinsel City Rhapsody is probably my favourite, though I am very fond of the opening song from Revenge Road as well.

I heard Lift Yr. Skinny Fists a month ago and fell in love with it. I have yet to hear other GY!BE albums though (I have had Piss Crowns are Trebled on repeat for a while though).

^ I liked Lift Yr. Skinny Fists, but not as much as F♯ A♯ ∞. Same went for Yanqui U.X.O., 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! and Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress: I enjoyed them, but not as much as that first album. Still pretty good, though. Have yet to get around to the Slow Riot for New Zerø Kanada EP so far, but I've heard it's good too.

Re: [Music] The Grand Music Discussion Thread [3]
I've been into a few bands recently. Yes have finally clicked for me after checking out their Live In Tsongas stuff, I always liked a few tracks of theirs but hearing the songs performed live really added something to them and made me appreciate them more.
I finally gave Emerson, Lake & Palmer a proper go as well. Always appreciated their place in the prog world but could only really listen to Tarkus. Still struggling a bit but I picked up the live 'Welcome My Friends...' album which is really good, aside from having wonderful versionf or Tarkus and Karn Evil 9 on I'm enjoying the other tracks from them too. I doubt they'll ever click like Yes, Genesis or King Crimson for me but I do appreciate them more now.
Finally I picked up the newest Bon Jovi album - This House Is Not For Sale. It's not bad, pretty typical of Bon Jovi from the last few years really. No surprises on there, they haven't put out a These Days/Dry County-esque song as an example but what is on there is decent enough.

Re: [Music] The Grand Music Discussion Thread [3]
Listened to two albums last night: Everything Must Go by Manic Street Preachers and The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me by Brand New.
EMG was definitely a solid album. Great songs, fantastic energy in the lyrics (A fantastic variety of tones and topics) and production, but I'm not as crazy for it as most are. Guess I do prefer the dark, hopeless and satircal feel of The Holy Bible more. I might just give it another shot sometime in the future. My personal favorites were A Design for Life (Duh), Enola/Alone, Australia, and No Surface All Feeling.
The latter, however, was great in every possible. I see that The Devil and God gets classified as emo, and in many ways it is, but I feel just calling it that really ruins the whole brand of the album. At it's core, it's one about the troubles and morbidity of reality, and it does it extremely well.
My personal favorites were Degausser, Limousine, Luca, and the untitled track.
In (Semi) non-album related stuff, I'm currently trying to get get into other types of metal. I'm starting with trying black metal with bands like Darkthrone, Emperor, and The Axis of Perdition, but my reaction ranged from eh to ugh. It's telling that the band that some people classify as black metal that really isn't is Deafheaven.
Because I forgot this thread exists, I also should mention that I did listen to F♯ A♯ ∞ two weekends ago and in the middle of the night. A lot of people have called the album, and I can see where they'r coming from, but in a way, it's also one of the most beautiful albums I've heard. The opener The Dead Flag Blues presents a bleak corrupt future, but the strings and mentions about being with a loved one hooked me in.
Around that time, I also relistened to Primal Scream's Screamadelica. The firsttime I listened to it, I was half paying attention and mostly did it as background music. Now, listening to it again, I can say that...it's descent.
I definitely didn't hate it, but a lot of the songs didn't stick with me for the most part. There are undoubtly some great songs here - Higher then the Sun (Both the original and dub version), Come Together, and Loaded being standouts - but the it also felt boring at times with the songs ranging from alright psychaedelica (Slip Inside this House and Don't Fight It Feel It) to bland instrumentals/songs (I'm Comin' Down, Damaged, and Inner Flight). I've often half-joked with some people that if my favorite song on an album is the band/album's signiture/most well-known song, then I'm almost definitely not a real fan or fan at all, and seeing as how I absolutely love the way 'Loaded' is put together, this is one of those times where the half-joke isn't a joke at all.
With that being said, I am willing to give Primal Scream a few more chances with other albums.

Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
This album is a classic. Everything great about 80s progressive metal, packaged into a concept album. Was one of the first albums I owned, and to this day amazes me with its musicality and political relevancy. I admit I haven't checked out the sequel album, but I think I will sometime this week now that I'm crazy about this first album again. Any fans of classic metal should have this album in their collection.

I love how there's every conceivable kind of genre now in Idol music. And I really like this EP, it's cute. Curiously, I've recently stumbled upon a YouTube video that explained to me how all those idol genre mash up groups came to be, and it really enlightened me.
(SPOILER ALERT: It's due to an over-saturated market. maybe this is common knowledge? idk)
I'm not big into rap music, despite trying hard, I fail to see what's so good about Kendrick Lamar, for instance. I have a hard time getting through his songs.
I feel this is mostly, because I have a hard time understanding the lyrics, so most of the appeal is gone.
I do like some tracks of Frank Ocean though. And recently, I've tried listening to Tylor, the Creator and I can get behind that. It has a very relaxed vibe, without being borderline anemic like many Frank Ocean cuts feel to me. Maybe this is due to a willingness to almost always swaying from standard structure. Also, there's some really neat hooks on this this thing. This makes me happy.
Also, while I know I'm late to the party, I've been listening to lots of Death Grips recently. It's so abrasive, so I often end up feeling worn out halfway through an Album, so I really dig their new EP on Youtube, because it's so short. It's the perfect amount of time I can take from Death Grips. I also love the second half of the Power that B, while the Björk Samples on the first half drive me crazy. I never managed to get through it.
The new Gorillaz album is a colossal disappointment for me. There's a few ok songs, but most of them feel like they implode in a desperate attempt to sound quirky. Charger is awesome, though. So basically it feels like a sorry excuse to go on tour - which they do, at least. After buying the tickets for the show in Vienna, I sighed in relive that, for the first time, they won't just play the most recent album live ... (so they at least know that Humanz is a catastrophy, lol)

Anybody heard of Diablo Swing Orchestra? Just randomly stumbled upon them on a prog metal playlist on Spotify. These guys are loads of fun. As the name implies, they incorporate big band jazz into heavy rock, and they definitely lean more toward the stranger, macabre themes. My new earworms for a while. Shame they haven't released anything new for a few years.
Voodoo mon amour - Fast paced, prominent brass section. Fun, heavy swing song.
Of Kali Ma Calibre - Heavy, operatic, and very experimental. Perfect blend of the range the band is capable.
Exit Strategy of a Wrecking Ball - Heavier, more rock and rhythm based, but with plenty else going on. The vocals sound a lot like Muse here.

I meant to reply to this earlier but did you ever check out the sequel? I've always been tempted but knowing that Geoff Tate ended up being a huge prick and the quality of Queensrych dropped off at a certain point always stopped me from checking out anything beyond the original Mindcrime.
Which is a shame because that album really helped start one of my favourite genres.

Re: [Music] The Grand Music Discussion Thread [3]
It's a bit of a mess. Definitely not the same passion behind the project as with the original, and it shows. I guess much of the recorded music isn't the band itself, due in part to the drama Geoff Tate was causing. The music is good, and there are moments of greatness, however for the most part it's forgettable. The original album is catchy, energetic, and has a clear story being told. The sequel is hard to follow, frankly boring in some parts, and the overall production is muddy. It's not an album I can revisit over again like the original, but I feel it's worth checking out once at least.

I might have a listen just out of curiosity. I actually listened to the original today inspired by your post here. I forgot just how good it really was, absolutely fantastic.

Got a chance to see the best band in the world last night(albeit at a festival): New Order. I was a tad worried about how they'd sound after watching a few recent live performances of theirs, but they killed it. They're up there in age but they still brought it; Sumner jumped around a bit, and Morris still plays drums like a machine. They played in front of this giant screen that played different types of videos, like scenes from films, or clouds, or old distorted images of NO videos. They played my favorite JD song, "Disorder" and my favorite NO song, "Your Silent Face." They also played "Ultraviolence" and Bernard said something about that song not being played in the North American continent for a while, which was pretty cool. They finished with "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and an image of old I.C. went up on the screen behind them and the crowd roared, then they projected the words "FOREVER JOY DIVISION" which I thought was very nice and was pretty moving. They also played the hits, "Bizarre Love Triangle", "True Faith", and "Blue Monday" and "Temptation", a couple songs off their (wonderful) last record, "Singularity" and "Plastic", and "Sub-Culture"

After a long delay at the mail due to hurricane holdup, i finally got Symphonic Suite Akira by Geinoh Yamashirogumi CD.
Of the shorter songs, my favorite is Dolls' Polyphony with it's acapella rhythm spliced with a bit of keyboard. From the longer options, Tetsuo and Shohmyoh rank very high.
