Well, it's no Divine Wings, Twilight, or New Mythology, but I'd rate it above Odyssey and Paradise Lost, and most certainly above Iconoclast. I should also warn that's it's still mostly in the shreddy style of Paradise Lost and Iconoclast, and not as progressive and thoughtful as their earlier albums. However I do think it attempts to bring back a touch of that neo-classical style with it, which is a step in the right direction, and Russell Allen gives a more inspired performance, IMO. Still a couple of misses, but the hits are pretty strong.

Zap: if you're looking for some interesting progressive metal that does an excellent job balancing heaviness with all other ends of the spectrum, I highly recommend Devin Townsend's Sky Blue/Dark Matters double album if you haven't heard it already. The former is the perfect blend of heavy progressive rock with electronic and pop tendencies, while the latter is a very off-the-wall concept album, and follow-up to Ziltoid the Omniscient. This is Devin Townsend at his best yet, which says a lot given his body of work, and one that I think any fan of modern progressive metal should listen to, even if they don't care for Devin's other work.

Obviously it's all Ian Curtis' fault, but JD just gets me so depressed and down when I listen to it. It's haunting and gorgeous but it makes me so uneasy I can't listen to it in large bursts.

Joy Division to me is more disturbing than sad, it's a sort of cold, arm's-length despair. It's haunting, but it doesn't gut-punch me. It's haunting in the way that something like a David Lynch movie is.

On the other hand, Age of Consent can make me think of shit I regret almost immediately. Wow that came out really wrong.

I've been thinking about this a little bit too over the past couple months, and I'd say that most of the people I know who've listened to both bands would pick New Order, so it's nothing to feel bad about at all. One of my friends basically said it best when he said, "New Order is just funner." I was a true blue Joy Division obsessive from ages 15 - 18 so I'll always like them more than NO, but I'd say I've actually listened to twice the NO than JD over the past couple years. JD doesn't make me as happy as it did when I was a pissed off teenager, but it doesn't fill me with much dread or sadness either. I like to put it on when I'm sorta bummed so I can bask in it for a little bit, but I'm not going to put it on with my friends or if I'm going out driving.

New Order is really awesome, and I love that I like their early stuff just as much as the stuff they're releasing now, but I'm a bit tired of hearing Bizarre Love Triangle and True Faith while at the same time I know I'll never ever tire of LWTUA or Disorderrr. A lot of times I'll be listening to a NO song and I'll just think, can't ya just wrap this thing up in three and a half minutes?

Which band is better is definitely a nice little thing to debate though. And anyway, at the end of the day Alan Wilder-era Depeche Mode is much better than either one.

New CHVRCHES, Every Open Eye is pretty sweet. I have a lot of love for their first record but don't hold it in super high acclaim because for every high, like the super catchy dance songs "The Mother We Share"(though it never sat right with me that this was the opening track) and "Recover" there was a low forgettable track that one would long to skip to get to the next super dancey song. I would name them, but as I mentioned, totally forgettable.
Their new record doesn't have a song like "The Mother We Share" that'll hook into you after one hearing, but it also doesn't have a song that I can't wait to get over either. The songs blend into and compliment one another well so it can be a bit hard to remember where one ends and another begins, which is a fun feeling to have when the LP is on the turntable. As Blue Monday touched on above when discussing Joy Division/New Order, this is very much an album as opposed to A Collection of Singles Recorded 2012-2013. And it's still wonderful pop music that is nice to dance to.

My favorite tracks: Clearest Blue
Never Ending Circles
"Empty Threat" No linkz, sry.

New Deerhunter, Fading Frontier, due out this Friday. Sounds like it's more similar to Halcyon Digest(dreamy) and Cox's work in Atlas Sound(electronic) than their previous effort, the much more lofi and slightly less well received Monomania(which was actually a lot better than given credit for). Anyway, I think this is definitely going to be an album worth checking out.

The third track they've released from it is a total jam -- Living My Life

Been on a Future kick lately. I don't know how many of you guys follow mainstream hip hop/trap stuff, but Future's mixtapes have been consistently good and his newest album, DS2, is pretty great.

Of course, this isn't the most profound music, but the production and the flow, the harmony of it, is on another level.

Pretty accurate assessment. Cold, debilitating ice of sound that sinks into your marrow, sticking there and turning you colder with each passing track. At least as their studio output presents.

Their live stuff is more vibrant and loud, boisterous, desperate, manic or hellish or something. Brilliant, even if musically somewhat lacking (Sumner was never the best guitarist in the world and he somewhat regularly fucked up when playing live, but I think his botches added more than they distracted and contributed to the manic feeling if flight and madness that the performances tended toward) and surviving now only in somewhat lo-fi quality. Maybe that makes it more visceral, though. I think it does.

Only seen one song of his besides the famous Rickroll, but i absolutely love Rick Astley so far with She Wants to Dance with me. Not sure how to put it, find it really cute/innocent in it's own way i guess. Plus his vocals are simply amazing.

I've also been relistening to Carlos Santana whose guitar playing i adore, and spiced up with latino flavor to boot!. Smooth or Corazon Espinado are probably good showcases of his ability in making the guitar "sing", but EUROPA is more of a tour de force of what he's fully capable of.

Angela Lansbury singing about cutting up human flesh and serving them to her customers is surreal and never gets old. She's the nicest little old lady in Hollywood, hearing her sing about such dark and twisted subject matter with such honest glee just makes me laugh and shudder at the same time.

New Animal Collective track out; Floridada, with a new record due in February. I was about to say that it didn't take them to long to release a follow up to their last album, but then I remember that that album came out in 2012. -o-; Maybe it's because the individual members came out with a couple records since then, or maybe time goes by fast now a days, I don't know. The new track is nice and fun and short, and I'm happy to see that the new album isn't going to be a double LP since recently I've been preferring songs under five minutes(my attention span isn't what it used to be). I wasn't all that big a fan of their last record, but I've still got pretty high expectations for this one.

-------------------------------------------------
Also, if anyone on here is even remotely a fan of electronic or pop or electropop  music you've got to check out the new Grimes album, Art Angels. Very very highly recommended.

Oh, I love Floridada. I had the feeling that the different parts of the soundscape didn't come together too well on the last LP - as if they where fighting against each other instead of working together to create the trademark Animal Collective sound, sometimes even feeling like a bad mash-up than a coherent song. To cacophonia and too little euphonia for my poppy tastes.
I think you catch my drift.
Anyways, if this song is any indication for the album, this will be a nice one.

^Yea, your assessment is pretty spot on; I think their sync rate was a bit off on the last release. ;) I think it might have been a bit too of them trying to blend too many aspects of their sound into one release, coupled with the fact that Merriweather was universally loved from the moment of its release and it was impossible to follow up. I actually just recently accepted the fact that I really don't like Centipede Hz. It was like my entire heart and soul could not and would not accept that AC had come out with something that I really had no desire to listen to for hours on end, partially because AC was a band that I'd fallen in love to, and partially because they had come out with so many good releases, together and individually, in a row; Young Prayer, Sung Tongs, Feels, Strawberry Jam, Water Curses, Merriweather, Fall Be Kind, Person Pitch, Down There, Tomboy. I sorta feel bad for the AC fanboys who browse their forums, they probably still can't come to grips with their true feels for CZ. And, humorously, the two times I saw them live during the Centipede Hz album cycle they didn't play the one song I actually kinda dig, "Applesauce."

But yea, I don't expect them to lay another egg either, and my hopes are heightened because recently another of my favorite bands, Titus Andronicus, came out with a new record that I love after releasing one in 2012 that I usually forget exists.
