Not sure if anyone else was following this case, but the verdict is in. George Zimmerman was found not guilty........I find this disgusting.

I had the same thing on my clipboard (different site). I don't think we'll find a neutral source of information on this for quite a while. I'd be interested in reading the proceedings, when and if they are published. I think I'll give the circuit court a ring.

I confirmed it.....I've been watching it off and on all day. Took those women(saying this nicely) 15 hours....15 HOURS. I'm so disappointed in Florida, but I'm not surprised.

Why was the jury just 6 rather than 12?

Also, THIS story highlights how unclear the stand your ground law is being handled.

I don't want to turn this into a political rant, so I'll make it short. FLORIDA IS FUCKED UP. I've lived here my entire life and have had to deal with the backassery that goes on here. That stand your ground law is nothing but a vehicle for gun toting hicks to get themselves out off from killing an innocent victim.

I actually remember that story you posted and it was a serious blow to anyone in an abusive relationship. That woman was clearly wronged by our justice system. It completely disgusted me and I hate to feel that way. I love where I live...absolutely love it. It kills me to see BS like this in the State I call my home.

I got that link all over Facebox. I'm compiling demo reports, so I've seen a *lot* of this.

In Florida, warning shots and killing someone with a gun are handled under different sets of laws. You can't really compare the two, they aren't dealt with in the same way. Legally, you can kill someone if you are actively being attacked. However, firing warning shots is not covered under the same laws. It is considered (IIRC) under "brandishing a weapon".

EDIT: Fellow Floridian, soon to be Tampon, here.

I have so many thoughts about the trial, but all I will say is this:

1. I am angry.
2. The prosecution was incompetent. I was watching some of the video of the trial before I went out tonight, and they just sucked it up.

Actually, In that case I'd say the system worked as intended. The prosecution failed to make it's case and we default to not guilty, regardless of how people might feel about it.

The other case I pointed out is the one where it went wrong.

One of those things, just like the recent NSA stuff: Don't agree with the outcome (though I don't have intimate details that is surely requisite), but it really is "probably" legally correct. It's a state case, and as the state of Florida is handling it, I will say that having grown up there and served time in its correctional system, it's one of the more fucked up states, in my opinion; and not just politically.

Why is everyone in this topic so certain that Zimmerman was actually guilty? For so many people to have had it in for Zimmerman regardless of the outcome of the trial, I can only hope that the facts of the case are really, really obvious.

Sometimes there’s not enough evidence to convict people who probably did do something wrong. That’s just a fact of our judicial system. People are innocent until PROVEN guilty. Beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Jury, holding a man’s fate in their hands, felt that there wasn’t enough evidence for them to convict. It’s not a conspiracy. It’s not racism. It’s not injustice. It’s the price we pay for having a high standard of proof. Sometimes, people get away with it.

I think Zimmerman got away with it. But, it’s done. So suck it up and move on. The fight continues.

Sorry, Trayvon.

And I think that sums it up.

Quite -- it was a politically motivated prosecution that should never have been brought in the first place (and one that only happened after replacing the investigating officer and bringing in a special prosecutor to do the dirty work).

@Sgt. Griff That quote was from this video by TheAmazingAtheist.

I feel as if I don't know enough about the case to make a comment, but I'll just reiterate that you can't try someone without sufficient evidence, no matter how emotionally charged the trial gets.

White guy shoots white guy: Nobody gives a fuck

White guy shoots black guy or vice versa: ZOMFG ALL COURTS ARE TEH RACIST

Okay, I get it. America has a long history of racism in its legal system, and simply in general. That doesn't mean that I can't think that it's a tremendous pain in the ass whenever this stuff happens. Now, in terms of riots, I'm not surprised if any of them do happen. In fact, I'll think that they are perfectly justified, since, as said, we're known for having been really fucking racist. However, it's hard for me to care, since I'm growing up on the front lines of a generation that's more tolerant than most that have come down the line before it. I know that racism is a national problem, but the legal system is right here. Since G.Z. was not proved guilty beyond a shadow of any reasonable doubt, the courts state that he goes free. Speak racism about it all you want; hell, you may even be right.

Mostly on-target there, Nuke. The problem here is our Use of Force laws and how they interact with self-defense, gun culture, racism, and authority issues in the U.S. We want authority to have its hands tied to a great extent to it can't run wild, but that means its ability to act is limited by design: the cops didn't arrest Zimmerman because the law said they can't (they need Probable Cause to dispute a claim of self-defense, and that's a high standard to meet). The prosecutors couldn't prosecute because they had no evidence, leaving an outside party to force the issue (which was a violation of a different sort, but that's neither here nor there). The jurors couldn't convict because they weren't presented with a case that proved guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. All the parts of the system worked as intended, and that holds regardless of whether the intent was racist in nature or simply rule of law. Nothing in this case could have happened in any other way than what it did.

This is the price of a system that would rather see 10 guilty people go free than one innocent person wrongfully imprisoned. The very same people who are looking to riot now would go out of their minds with rage if the police and the courts did to one of their own what they wished they'd do to Zimmerman. But if we want the law to mean anything we have to stick to it even when it means people we don't like get away with murder. The only way to change this is to change the law, and that would be a tough balance to manage in cases like this one even in an ideal world. In a world as influenced by politics as ours is? Yeah, good luck.
