You heard about Ingrid Newkirk? She bitterly hates anyone who mess with animals, and so she created a movement to upturn centuries of man's relationship with domesticated animals by convincing everyone -- even by force, and mostly gullible, fashion-conscious teens -- to become like her, a self-avowed militant vegan.

All this coming from a man -- yes, that is me -- who sometimes has to cut the throats of several live chickens, then soak them in boiling water to remove the feathers before quartering them for cooking; eventually they'll be made into fried chicken for a wedding banquet.

And I still have no regrets working as an occasional chicken technician.

I really do not know, what you want to tell me. What I wanted to say was, that people should be aware, what their choice of lifestyle does to their environment. I hate people who tell others how to live their lives, but everybody should be aware, that if they buy eggs from non-free chickens, that those chicken didn't have a nice life. If somebody is ok with that, it's ok with me.

I think what I wanted to say is, that people should stop living so disconnected from their environment.

I think that it's an obvious outcome, our society allows us to live completely disconnected from the natural environment, we can try to remind ourselves that we're not separated from nature yet many (most?) of us won't ever have to do anything to actively demonstrate that.

Anyway, more news and less (pseudo)-philosophy:
At least 139 people died in eastern Europe and Germany because of "cold weather" (that's an euphemism imo).
So let’s make a wish.

That's actually cool that they found a lake. Who knows what they found in that lake? If they do find something then I hope they have flamethrowers ;)!

:chinscratch: this actually sounds like bad news to me, it's been 5 days since they've lost contact with those Russian scientists, like the article says.

some areas of Antarctica are worse than others so depending on where they are they could still be alive. And after crunching the numbers this lake is about four kilometers below the surface which compared to the geofront's 0.9 km depth, so this is considerable deeper than the one at Tokyo III. I wonder if it would be possible to get a C-130 down their for SAR.

It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with denial. I've killed and prepared fish, chickens, pigs and deer while working in a butcher/deli shop, at my grandpa's farm, or just fishing and hunting so there's no illusions there. All that said, I still don't care to eat some meats, especially chicken, turkey, and other foul, when there are still bones involved. All those connective tissues and such change the texture of the meat in a way that I find unappetizing even if you do cover it in buffalo sauce. I don't mind bones at all when eating bbq ribs or a nice steak though.

Today (February fifth) is the 50th anniversary of jogging. Fifty years ago a man in Auckland NZ (my hometown) had the idea of putting on kit and running for fun.

More proof, if it were needed, that Bastiat was the last Frenchman to understand economics; and that the problem is, he died in 1850.

Like, pandering to the intransigence of out-moded business plans?

NASA will "probably" withdraw from the joint ExoMars mission because of budget constraints, now ESA is trying to get the Russians inside the program.
Eventually it'll become evident that transatlantic relations will need to be revised, the sooner the better.
