Math Help? Again

Yeah. You read right. This is for everything that doesn't have anything to do with Eva.

Okay, I need some uber-help here. I dont get any of this.

How would I go about solving it? would I square it to cancel out the roots? I have to solve for X.

Why are you asking about math on an evangelion forum? Even if its the off topic section this isnt the place I would go for help. You should ask about that in a math forum or something, but then again obsessivemathsfreak could probably help you pretty good.

AFAIK, you should multiply the squares by each other (in this case, the X are removed, but the remaining terms are multiplied), and then, solve it like a regular equation. Hope that helps!
What?

TS suggested it.

And who the hell joins a math forum? O.o

PS.

Its been done before. it just had a prettier, longer explanation.

Sqaure it on both sides so you get and equation without any of the square roots. Then you just solve it like a regular equation.

But you have to be careful with that first part of the equation. (sqaure root X +21 minus 1) When you square that, you have to FOIL it. (a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2 OR (a-b)^2 = a^2 - 2ab + b^2

I got the answer as 4

you got it as 4? I foiled it and I just got this massive problem.

So far I've been told its 4,8,9 and its not equal to anything. D:

I would show you my work, but my scanner is totally busted. :(

But I got 5 = square root of x+21 as my second to the last step.

All I can say is that the answer is 4

Because

squareroot(x+21) -1 = squareroot(x+12)

Sqaureroot (4 + 21) -1 = squareroot (4+12)

Squareroot (25) -1 = Squareroot of 16

5-1 = 4

4= 4

Alrite, borrowed my dad's digital camera. Here are two pictures that I took with explaining how I did it. (They are kind of lopsided cause the screen is screwed up. >.<)

Hope this clears some things up. ^^

okay, we went over that problem today in class, so I scanned my work.

Image

Note that the problem is a square root still, and I squared it on that so I wouldn't have to re-write it just to square it.

D: I kind of get it now.

I don't like math much, but I seem to have some kind of talent for math more than any other subject other than Biology. I haven't tried any other sciences at my school yet so I don't know. Precalculus right now in my sophmore year. So I'd say I'm OK at math.
