Magic squares (as the name implies) have a fairly prominent place in various western occult traditions. I suspect that in this case it's the influence of kaballah, not of the pythagoreans (say) or any of the other various and sundry esoteric traditions based around numbers, since this is Kircher's work and geared more towards the alchemical current.
