Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
I'll take a few shoddy CG effects in exchange for a good story any day of the week.
Having how much other modern Japanese films have overreached in what they could do effects wise makes me love the (almost) flawless effects work of Shin Godzilla even more.

Not to mention the story just completely shits all over the train wreck that was the 2014 Godzilla.
Please just call me Ian, "TheFrisky" is more of a title.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
Everyone is talking about bad CG in the film and no one has yet mentioned the part with the blood in the tunnel at the beginning of the film?
My memory may be wrong here here but I recall this being very jarring.
I couldn't find a gif of it but this part SPOILER: Show

Yes. This is the high watermark for modern visual effects in Japan. I couldn't help but be impressed by Toho.

Apparently The film does have slightly better effects with this release. (Heated exhaust) can anyone spot other differences?

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
The pamphlet that comes with the Blu-ray seems to have screenshots of the two different angles of Godzilla demonstrated in the YouTube video you linked. There seems to be a list of other shots that might have changed from the theatrical release to the home video release, but seeing as how I can't read Japanese, I can really only make out the numbers and assume that those are the scene numbers that contain the changes made.

Can't find any real noticeable differences in the Bluray cut but it's not like I have the theatrical print on hand.
Personally, I'm more interested in some of the abandoned concepts. Like how in this special effects reel you can see at a certain point in production they were planning on having Godzilla vomit acidic blood.

The Bluray does not have the theatrical release? Well that sucks.
Got to admit, that concept is bad-ass; foreshadowing the Atomic Breath sequence(I love it). Judging by how that clip uses an on-site shot with the prop "river blood" tells me that the shot was dropped after Principal-photography, probably due to how cheesy the implemented CG was, and they couldn't get it to look right. (If only they used a Tokusatsu miniature) To Quote CommanderFish,

Thing I want to add is that they should have looked into what the special effects personal did for the blood elevator scene from "The Shining"

I just re-watched the film, (Holy Cr@p) the CG during the final operation has definitely been improved on.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
So I've finally watched Godzilla in theaters. Despite it being a one-day special, the theatre was only about 1/5th full. I still like the film a lot, the interesting part were the reactions of my two friends, who have never seen an Anno movie. They were kind of underwhelmed immediately after it, but after I explained some context to them they came to appreciate the movie more.

What do you think about the subtitles? Did your friends think it was a bit fast-paced?

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
Finally gave in and watched the Resurgence version of the movie since no theater in my country has the uncut version.
It was a very well rounded reboot which made excellent use of most of the central characters; I say "most" because despite Satomi Ishihara getting third top billing, pretty much all she does is stand pretty and spout exposition when it's necessary ; as well as Godzilla himself with his interesting forms of evolution.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
We actually only had a dubbed version available in my city. The dub was okay. But while the exposition-heavy dialogue is already stilted in the original, the fast pace in which they had to put proper nouns into the sentences made it often seem like robots were talking.
One of my friends found it interesting, he picked up on the commentary and was interested by it. But he has no personal connection to Godzilla at all - he doesn't really care for Kaiju movies. And when he saw the (for him) cheap looking Godzilla he couldn't take the film seriously any longer.
My other friend is a huge Godzilla nerd and was kind of bewildered by all the talking - only after I explained to him why the movie chose to frame the Godzilla attack that way he came out more satisfied. I mean, this movie does betray a big convention of cinematic story telling. Show - don't tell. But again, this is one point the movie is trying to make - mocking the slow response of the Japanese government to natural disasters.
Both of them expected more of an action flick - and less of an art movie, essentially.

Shin Godzilla coming to Blu-ray in the US on August 1st, 2017.
No sign of a 4K Blu-ray release State's side, but I'll still get it.

Was the dubbed good? Like any opinions on it overall? Looking forward to watching it with dubbs but don't want to get my hopes too high.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
I didn't see the dub. I couldn't tell you.
English subtitles were overlaid with burnt-in Japanese subtitles, and some of of those burnt-in Japanese subtitles were enough to literally fill in the entire screen at least 3 times. So, that was a challenge. Maybe they'll have an option to omit the subtitles for "on screen text."

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
Pretty sure the dub is 100% new for the Bluray.
Also shame to see there's only going to be 34 minutes of special features. Probably they'll life some of the behind the scenes effects documentaries from the Japanese release & a couple of the film's trailers.
To date the Special Features are only -
Godzilla vs. the Nerds: Interview
Original Trailers

I really wish they would stop bloating Bluray releases with a needless DVD included. It's seems like they only do that to have an excuse to have the price be higher. It's especially useless when there's a standalone dvd release you can just buy if you want a dvd (which is $22.49? Holy crap, that's expensive for a dvd in this day and age).
Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)
Having the DVD is nice because BD drives were (maybe still are?) fussy, which means a lot of people can't play the BD everywhere even if they supposedly have the right equipment. The DVD is a handy backup that can be played most anywhere.

Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

I'm expecting a 10-minute interview with Funimation Staff wearing Godzilla t-shirts, and a handful of trailers for Shin Godzilla and other Funimation titles.
