I'm bumping this thread because there is time frame for the movie's release...2018. (Seriously? Will anyone care at that point?)

I was kinda hoping that it being delayed so long would've allowed Anno the chance to direct it (as rebuild will most likely conclude by 2015), as was originally intended.....a quarter of a century earlier.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

I love the way yaraon put it. "Wait, 2018? It's not like there's any guarantee GAINAX itself will exist then!"

But yeah 2018 seems to confirm yet again the production side of the feature is pretty grim...

This does sound like it could very well be Gainax's final project as a bona fide anime studio. It does have that "full circle" thing going for it. Most of their better talents have moved on and formed their own studios or gone on to other projects.

Looks like a re-confirmation of the 2018 release:

http://mantan-web.jp/2014/12/05/2014120 ... 2000c.html
http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2 ... se-in-2018

The film is financed by a newly launched LLP (Limited Liability Partnership) in Singapore, Uru in Blue LLP.

Wait what? They had to make a foreign company to finance it?

EDIT: more:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... ing/.81782

Instead of the typical Japanese production committee, Uru in Blue will be produced by Uru in Blue LLP, a limited liability partnership comprised of various investors and partners. This LLP is based in Singapore, and they are currently seeking investors. The projected budget is US$40 million, and Yasuhiro Takeda will be a producer.

They are aiming absurdly high with that budget. Is it all doing to be outsourced CGI or something?

Every new bit of news seems to inspire less and less confidence. Gainax does very much seem dead in the water with all the creative staff gone to khara and Trigger.

The $40 mill budget makes this sound like Yamaga is trying to have a dick measuring contest with Anno.

And what are the odds it will make anywhere near $40 million at the box office?

At least they're trying to go out with a bang.

I hope this doesn't become the Anime equivalent of Disneys Lone Ranger.

And what was Akira's budget, $11 million?

Little Nemo's budget... $35 million?

All right, Yamaga, gimme the most lavish full animation Japan's ever produced and I'll be satisfied.

I'm pretty sure The Wind Rises is the champ with 100 million or something.

The $100mil number probably came from here:

http://ajw.asahi.com/article/cool_japan ... 1309270012

As of Sept. 5, 7.47 million people have seen "Kaze Tachinu," and the movie has brought in 9.23 billion yen ($93.03 million) at the box office. But according to a source at Ghibli, the film cost so much to make that it hasn't turned a profit yet, while "Kaguyahime" cost even more to produce.

Yeahh that.

So wait if it only had 30 million budget how could it not have turned profit at that stage? Someone's data is wrong...
