I remember buying the DVDs like there was no tomorrow in 2005. Watching it, loving the beginning but disliking the progression. It all became so still and uneventful and it really, really felt like wasted time although I thought I was into that type of things. I don't remember much of it, though, so a re-watch is probably in order.

Can't help the feeling that it could be the emperor's new clothes of late 90s animes, that's what I felt then...

For some reason this series always makes me very nostalgic.
I don't know why, maybe it's because I started using computers and the internet
right around the time when Lain was originally airing in Japan.

[Merged from Currently Watching cuz if it's gonna be daily it might as well be here. - Monk]

Remember earlier when i said i rewatched lain? what i meant to say was i rewatched the opening and then stopped because.....i honestly have no idea, i have to be in a certain mood to watch lain and thus i haven't actually seen it in years so i went to piratebay and downloaded the blue ray version (i could watch my own discs but they are in standard quality, my screen would make them look terrible).

Currently only rewatched episode 1 but........yep this anime is as good as i remember it being, the entire time i was totally drawn in to what was going on and i love the way each shot is done, though it gets downright uncomfortable in some scenes because i know where all this foreshadowing is going and its honestly very creepy.

Going to spread this over 1 episode per day so my brain has time to properly process each episode and i don't end up confused and only getting it weeks later like i did the first time i watched it.
then again the first time i watched it in was 10 because before my mum was an anime fan in her mind cartoon=must be for kids!

speaking of (and very offtopic) when i was 10-13 i watched some fucked up shit, 10 was the time my dad introduced me to the grudge and the ring, 11 was akira by my mum buying me it, also fma 2003 which while not exactly fucked up i dont think my 11 year old brain was prepared for the nina scene and at 13 i saw all 3 evil dead movies.
but dont worry none of that had any effect on me whatsoever now if you will excuse me i need to go sort through my pile of skulls, demonic sculptures and anime so i can try and find my 3ds pen, last i checked it was in my"funeral" style dress and then suddendly gone.

My episode 2 re-watch of lain is done, i think the only thing i remember about this series is loving it and the ending/last plot twist.

since i at least know what lain is im just going to call the other lain proto-lain in these posts as i cant remember her either.
Not got much to say about this episode, not because it was in any way bad but just because i would be repeating what i said with episode 1 though i do really love the way the anime portrays how totally alone lain is.

My daily lain watch is done, this family is so fake it hurts, i mean it it hurts knowing lain has spent her whole life around people that don't give a shit about her except maybe her sister who is very obviously brainwashed.

Well episode 4 was......something.
i feel like the only reason i was able to follow that as well as i was is because i have seen the series before albeit years ago.
all of the wired stuff merging with the real world is starting to kick off however and this shit is goooood, also lains personality seems to be shifting more towards her wired personality which........isn't exactly a good nor bad thing i mean it makes her seem more normal to her classmates but at the same time it feels totally wrong, though again i know where this is going so another twist spoiled for me.

also is it really a good idea to move this here? this thread rarely gets responses and i cant replay to my own posts :/

I don't have much to contribute, having only seen Lain once, but I do like the implication that, whatever the Knights may think, the Wired isn't the Internet as we know it: it's the sum total of all human communication, all the way back to the Tower of Babel.

^Things do get much more complicated in later episodes, what with Lain using the Wired to alter everyone's memories and her weird meeting with a construct of her father in the final episode. It does seem to be above what could be accomplished solely with the Internet, unless everyone in the Lain universe is connected to the Wired without the need for a medium device.

So basically she's hacking the Akashic Records? Hmm, interesting theory.

I kinda want to just assume the whole world is a simulation and Lain is a new AI being tested. Hacking the world from the inside might be a fail, sadly... not much demand for meglomania inmost consumer goods.

This is all way more than I was able to get out of my viewing of the series. The Wired merging with the real world? Slipped right past me.

I always interpreted the Wired as a type of super-internet that affect's the user's subconscious. Why humanity would invent something like that, I have no idea. It's the only explanation that explained, to me, why people would be so caught up in it and how Lain and others could do what they did.

"Absolutely. The will to make oneself completely free. Will is the wrong word, because in the end you could call it despair. Because it really comes out of an absolute feeling of it's impossible to do these things, so I might as well just do anything. And out of this anything, one sees what happens."--Francis Bacon

It's been a while since I've seen Lain but I remember this being stated in the show, or at least being heavily implied. Lain herself was a physical manifestation of the "God of the Wired", and her presence on people's minds was what ultimately allowed her to appear in the physical world, or at least that's how I remember it.

Every fan should read the Lain - Nightmare of Fabrication manga
It's pretty good
Super short. Only around 18 pages so you should have no problem plowing right
thru it :)

Perhaps, although there were also people claiming she was a clone/artificial human and it's difficult to tell at times where people's adoration of Lain ends and Lain's actual self begins, due to the influence she accumulates over the course of the series and her ever-growing power.

not even halfway in ep 2, and the number of evangelion ripoff shots I've counted it staggering. not that that would be a bad thing, in this case. like what I'm seeing so far. but seriously, it's 1:1 shots in some cases!

The creators of Lain where asked if they where inspired by neon genesis evangelion and they said no. I think the reason they seem similar is because they come from same era and they are both sci-fi and both deal with social issues, although, I think lain has more to say about society in general than NGE does.

Wiki:
The authors were asked in interviews if they had been influenced by Neon Genesis Evangelion, in the themes and graphic design. This was strictly denied by writer Chiaki J. Konaka in an interview, arguing that he had not seen Evangelion until he finished the fourth episode of Lain. Being primarily a horror movies writer, his stated influences are Godard (especially for using typography on screen), The Exorcist, Hell House, and Dan Curtis's House of Dark Shadows. Alice's name, like the names of her two friends Julie and Reika, came from a previous production from Konaka, Alice in Cyberland, which in turn was largely influenced by Alice in Wonderland. As the series developed, Konaka was "surprised" by how close Alice's character became to the original Wonderland character.[11]
