The Dummy System's Backwards Message: MESSAGE FOUND!

When the Dummy System lowers onto Shinji, it kind of sounds like an electronic voice, doesn't it? As ZapalacX put it, like a Cylon.

It also, in my opinion, sounds like it was recorded backwards. I've worked a lot with reversing sound and it sounds to me very much like it was reversed after being recorded.

So I recorded it, reversed it, and played it back. There's no doubt: it's a vocoded message, and while I'm not sure, it seems to be in English. It contains non-Japanese syllables and the person talking seems to have an accent that could be considered American.

I couldn't make out what was being said, but Reichu heard "dominated by others". I searched that and found it. It's a quote from the cult classic sci-fi film Colossus: The Forbin Project. It's saying:

"Freedom is an illusion. All you lose is the emotion of pride. To be dominated by me is not as bad for human pride as to be dominated by others of your species."

Coincidentally, I saw the film last year, which makes this discovery all the more powerful. The context is (spoilers for Colossus: The Forbin Project):

SPOILER: Show
The speech that Colossus makes at the end of the film when he has successfully dominated humanity.
The voice sounds computerized in the movie as well because it's being spoken by... well, computer.

Whoops, I'd had a link to the MP3 hosted on my own site (WAAY better than Megaupload because you don't have to wait 45 seconds) but my edit removed the link when I replaced that chunk of text after figuring out the message.

Here you go.

Glad I could help.

I did a Japanese Google search to see if any of our overseas counterparts had found this yet, but apparently not.

make an image with instructions on how to reproduce this, and stamp your name all over it. Post everywhere.

I saw the movie as a Netflix rental, so unfortunately I no longer have the DVD with me to determine whether the audio was taken directly from the film. Fortunately, YouTube has the video up in ten parts and memory served correctly about the line being in the last part of the film.

Unlike NGE's images from The Andromeda Strain, the audio is not taken directly from Colossus; it was recorded and processed anew for Evangelion.

Very nice find. Also, not a bad flick... sort of the opposite of "War Games".

Most interesting... I hadn't paid too much attention to the sound.
Guess I'll have to watch it again, after listening to this file. Not that I mind.

On a partly related note, I had a thought while watching it the first time. The children's song that plays when the Dummy Plug was activated... "What if the Dummy Plug is singing?"
The Dummy Plug is singing.

Makes sense, Collossus was a giant.
Giants, in a biblical old testament sense, could be regarded as 'nephilim'.
Nephilim were the offspring of angels and mortals, one being Goliath (as per the base in the movie).
Nice catch btw.

And now for the implications: There probably aren't any, and it's just there to be an easter egg for easter egg's sake.

A backwards message couldn't possibly be intended to be understood by the pilot. And why say anything to the now-powerless pilot in the first place? The Rei clone at the heart of the dummy plug almost certainly didn't know English. Ritsuko and Maya most likely do know English, it being the language of science for the better part of a century now. But either of them actually programming it to say that... there's just no way.

It's a great find of course, but in another sense I find its existence disappointing on the part of the production crew. Can anyone come up with a reasonable in-universe explanation?

Isn't the fact that the Dummy Plug stomped over Shinj's will enough? :chuckles:

My reply redirected to another thread to avoid tangent. (Though one is probably going to happen in this thread anyway.)
