What was the saddest part of Eva for you?
What was the saddest scene/theme/song/realization for you regarding the series proper?
Did a character's backstory seem slightly worse than the others to you? Did a scene tug at your heart? Did one particular moment feel more depressing to you?
For me, ironically enough, it's a tossup between Shinji and Asuka, considering both of their backstories tie into my greatest fear. (Which shall remain unsaid.)
What about the rest of you?

"Crapsack worlds and anti heroes have their place. Sometimes, they are very necessary. But an endless diet of dreary cyberpunk and dark fantasy won't do us any more favors than an endless feast of glurge. I'd argue that the cynical nature of these really hurt our ability to hope and work for better. It gets us to accept the hopelessness and jaded outlook of things as 'That's the way it is. I can't change it,' and stops us from fighting when we NEED to fight."

Ran's persistent irony is a coping mechanism he uses to try and create some understanding of his paradoxical attraction to and disgust of the elitist bourgeois slaughterhouse in which he's forever trapped. --Muggy

Episode 1, the scene where Gendo basicallly told Shinji to pilot the Eva or GTFO. Poor kid, it's things like that which cause a 14 year-old to get so sick in the head that they fap over a comatose red-head.

I can't really think of anything in particular that made me feel sad, but the piece of music called Thanatos probably moved me the most of anything. It was used during the Zeruel fight, where Nerv were throwing everything they could at it (and failing) and Shinji was trying to get back to HQ after deciding he wanted to pilot Eva again. The entire scene was extremely memorable, but the music really made it.

That was sad to for us americans, but at one time for the Japanese that would be an ideal way to go. (In fact I think that may have been the referance.)

What the hell??
Oh, yeah. I forgot about that. That scene was pretty painful to watch...

Hey, im just saying.
As for the Asuka mutilation scene, that was pretty bad too. Not sad, but it made me think, "Ouch, thats really got to hurt."

And then again she didn't die, she was brought back.

No, remeber at the end she has the last line of the movie.
After Shinji shows her what he learned at the Ike Turner school of relationship behavior (I know, tasteless joke.), she whispers one word when he cries, that word being, "disgusting."
