Yup, so the next big Steven Speilberg WW2 HBO Series just premiered tonight, and I just finished watching it. My thoughts:

-Opening was pretty awesome, really arty in a pretentious sort of way, but I can sometimes like pretentiousness.

-Jump from lol1940sAmerica to Guadalcanal was too brief, more buildup would have been better. I felt like I knew the names of the main roles, and that was it. Whatever happened to character development?

-The fight scenes were alright, but I have yet to get a real feel for them. It felt a little two dimensional at times, and what I saw was probably the worst attempt at a flanking move that I have ever scene. I'm not sure if that was the actual way it went down, and if that's the way it really did happen, I am less surprised that the Japanese lost the war.

-Overall, Steven is going to have to follow up with some absolutely killer episodes if he wants to keep me watching, and at this rate, its not going to be Band of Brothers by a long shot.

this may sound really cheap by me, but with Tom Hanks apparently having gone to the Sean Penn Institute of Mind-Numbing Elitism and Idiocy, I'm too annoyed and angry right now to pay attention to this:
(check 3:06-3:59 in particular for some of most fantastical revisionist history I have recently heard on WWII or any war including the obvious recent one)

he comes across as such a snobby know-it-all but yet it feels like he's still acting

I'm sorry, and I am totally torn on this because I really enjoy most everything he's ever been in, but how in the name of anything good can I take a man with such a poor understanding of the history of American-Japanese relations or Islamic radicalism seriously with a project like this that he is in charge of, even with the compensation of Spielberg?

has Hanks ever heard the term "Bushido" before, that the Japanese were practically trying to destroy and conquer every nation including China, Korea, the Philippines, etc., in the Pacific regardless of whose skin color their sworn enemy was, Commodore Matthew Perry, or where the fcuk the cherry blossoms in D.C. came from?!

what a dumb-arse!

besides, with costs of this thing around the $200 million mark, I can't see this breaking even anytime soon

...lolwtf

I mean, yeah, he comes off kinda pompously, but I didn't see anything to completely raeg about. Most of it looked like reporter fanboys stroking his ego.

Wait, they've been announcing this title earlier than this year? I only knew about "The Pacific" since January of 2010.

Also, I have seen the first episode and part of 2nd episode, and let me tell you something... like "Band of Brothers", "The Pacific" will be epic. Will buy home video release as soon as it's released. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I saw the first episode. There aren't any lolis, and it doesn't seem to be slice of life, so I think it really wasn't all that good.
