I just don't see it happening without a 3rd party drawing both in. Asuka gives no indication of being anything other than straight and Rei seems to be only interested in Shinji and/or Gendo.

There is a lot of arguing about the canonicity of that pairing -- as far as A/R goes, even with the yuri goggles cranked up to max, there's no sign (whereas you get a student days Misato/Ritsuko on only a standard setting).

Some fics manage to pull the pairing off without going too far OOC -- as in Rei providing some more practical how-to advice about not closing yourself off to others than she does in the elevator scene in episode 22 (Evil Eric's The Visitor); or the two establishing some twisted co-dependency (Landgren's No Words) -- but they have to force the set-up.

Anyway I don’t know about Rei, but Asuka views Rei as the doll she doesn’t want to be and hates her for that, so I really can’t see this pairing [Though the idea that Rei can somehow quell Asuka’s fears about her past would be interesting to see]. They do look good together though.

Also, [Not assuming you’re doing this deliberately but this thread kinda looks that way to me] if you’re going to counter a sex-same pairing with an opposite same-sex pairing, it’s best to pick one with the same level of canon to back it up. S/K may have a lot of fangirls/boys but it’s still possible to like it based only on canon and not because it’s HAWT [Myself as an example] I’d say Ritsuko/Maya would have been the best candidate rather then Asuka/Rei honestly.

But let's admit it, if Kaworu was a girl instead of a guy, the whole K/S pairing would have far less fangirls. It's the yaoi factor that makes it so popular.

RitsukoxMaya would be okay, but I hate Ritsuko so I refuse to waste my time on pairings involving her.
