In thinking about it I can't quite put my finger on it but for some reason "The Kids Aren't Alright" by The Offspring reminds me of Eva.

And to lesser extent so does "Self Esteem".

I feel like Sun Ra's Sun Song is perfect for Eva (For the record, it was an album I grew up with). It's hard to describe the whole mood of that album but the jumpy, out-there feel of the music is very fitting IMO. It's a classic album and I'd definitely recommend listening to it:

Bring Me To Life by Evanescence is perfect for Evangelion because of the overall mood and its association with the "emo" label, but I think I could also make it work on a literal level.

So, the opening lines are confusion about a penetrated AT field. There's a bit of confusion throughout the song about lacking a soul. Even though you still literally possess your soul when your AT field is broken, I think that, within the context of the song, that experience is described as feeling soulless, because it's hard to differentiate your soul from the other one.

..Well, I tried. Can we please put this in the end credits of the hypothetical live-action movie?

I always thought Spirituality by Strapping Young Lad fits End of Evangelion very well. Someone should make an AMV of it and then include Asuka at the end of the film saying *that line* (you'll know what I'm talking about if you watch listen to the end) over the original

What? Another Hevy Devy fan on the board? I think I just made a new friend.

I agree that a lot of SYL has a bit of an Eva vibe, mostly since it's a lot of raw, visceral anger involving loneliness and communication. "What the FUCK was that? I'm being completely rational. I'M NOT YELLING. In any relationship there's gotta be compromise. I know I have my issues, and we know you have yours! Put it in gear!"
"Chaos is merely a human construct. The world only knows its own natural law of harmony and order."
"So you are saying it's the human heart that throws the world into confusion."

I've been getting into this The Weeknd dude lately and am deeply disappointed there isn't a Team Blue AMV for this song yet (actual song starts about 2 min. in, but the whole video is great). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYO77zNhWl4

After watching the Happy Video Game Nerd review, I've recently become obsessed with the SEGA Saturn horror game Enemy Zero and its beautiful soundtrack, composed by Michael Nyman (Yes, that Michael Nyman). My favourite song out of the soundtrack has to be the third track, Aspects of Love: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENh_am7oLXE

It reminds me strongly of Air on a G String, so I often think of Asuka fighting against the MP Evas whenever I hear this song. (Incidentally, since the combat in the Souls games reminds of that same battle, Aspects of Love is my go-to track for when I'm repeating previous levels)

If I had to pick one thing I love more then Evangelion, it would be listening to music...god, there's so much to choose from...

A Means to an End - Joy Division (A song about losing faith in your friends)

Idioteque - Radiohead (A song about the apocalypse in a nutshell)

Disposable Heroes - Metallica (A song about soldiers being forced into war without any empathy from the higher-ups)

Jeremy - Pearl Jam (Replace Shinji with Jeremy and the view is changed)

Everybody Hurts - R.E.M. (The overall message of Evangelion)
Anywhere Can Be Paradise as Long As I Have the Will to Live...

...after all, I am Alive, So I'll Always Have the Chance to Be Happy.

For some reason, I've always associated this song with Eva, and it's made me enjoy the song even more over the years. Iron Maiden's New Frontier: https://youtu.be/QginRFLESHU

SPOILER: Show
Bleeding you dry from the start
The sum of my parts
To give it away
New life in a day
Some new Frankenstein
Damned for all time

Cursed by the angel who fell
Who saves me from hell?
And who is my god?
And where is my soul?
Too tired to jump too young to run

[Bridge:]
Neverending, forever searching
Chasing dreams, the dreams of my heart
Always seeking, always asking
Questions right from the start

[Chorus:]
Out beyond the new frontier
Playing god without mercy, without fear
Create a beast, made a man without a soul
Is it worth the risk - a war of god and man?
Is it worth the risk - a war of god and man?

I want to end my life now
But I don't know how
Recycled again a lifetime of pain
The spawn of a man
The devil has planned

[Repeat bridge, chorus]
"Chaos is merely a human construct. The world only knows its own natural law of harmony and order."
"So you are saying it's the human heart that throws the world into confusion."

Anyone else think this sounds a lot like Sagisu? It wouldn't sound out of place if it were played over an Eva being deployed as an Angel is attacking

SPOILER: Show
"A Fair Judgement"

Losing sleep, in too deep
Fading sun, what have I done
Came so close to what I need most
Nothing left here
Cut the ties, uncover disguise
Left behind all intertwined
Lost control, moved out of the role now
Nothing's left here
Leave it be
It was meant for me
Soul sacrifice
Forgot the advice
Lost track of time
In a flurry of smoke
Waiting anxiety
For a fair judgement deserved

Two of my all-time favourite albums that to me are all about Instrumentality: In Rainbows by Radiohead and ( ), or The Bracket Album, by Sigur Rós

In Rainbows, as with a lot of Radiohead/Thom Yorke music, invokes feelings and imagery of water, isolation, the primordial sea and the ever-oncoming apocalyptical flood (which is a blunt metaphor for global warming, always a major theme for Thom and company post-Kid A). Here, though, visually the music is imbued with hues of orange and tungsten - our LCL - given form by the string section, arpeggios, synthesisers, intricately picked guitar chords and warm chesty vocals, sometimes whispered. Heck, there's even children's group vocals - our childhood memories - in the opening track. I couldn't paint any easier of a picture in the parallel, could I. Even the titular rainbows and cover art tie-in. Also, the band have stated in an interview around the time of release saying it's basically about loss and "the fucking panic of realising you're going to die."

Now, The Bracket Album is much more obtuse and more of a nebulous association. It's mostly instrumental (lol) with little use of vocals, and what is sung is sung in a made-up language; Vonlenska AKA Hopelandic. The lyrics have a make-of-them-what-you-will effect, tipping directly into your soul. However, the key conceit that plugs it in is that the album is clearly divided in two - each composed of four songs - with a strong progression throughout. The album starts out optimistic, warm and beautiful but it gets darker, more sparse and introspective as it goes on until the end. In this way it's a reversal of Shinji's experience, or the experience of an individual who has an opposite outcome; someone choosing to go off into the deep end, divesting their individuality and corporeal identity. The music itself - ambient post-rock - is cinematic in sound and scope. A four person band producing something as large and great as a fully fleshed out orchestra. The music here is deeply tied to a personal Tokyo-3 before and after Third Impact; entire places, moments and people come and go between notes. This is the soundtrack to Instrumentality.

"Eva(Geeks) is a story that repeats."
