Well the song seems to last a long time probably Pink Floyd - Echoes :P

I think it seems likely he listens to Classical Music though especially with the whole Cello thing.

if i can recall correctly, he was listening to "ode to joy" on his SDAT in ep. 24. but that's about the only time he listened to classical music. almost every other time that i can remember he was listening to J-pop

Well, nothing lively, thats for sure! I've noticed that when Shinji listens to music, he always gets lost in his thoughts and becomes lethargic, or tries to avoid the people around him.
I wonder what music would he listen to after the Third Impact, when his whole point of view has changed greatly... But I'm positive, that death-metal is not on the list... :D

He was listening to some random Jpop. And there was also a part where he listened to something from an album based on Ys music (Ys being a well known series for the TurboGrafx).

I guess in 2015 you won't have walkmans anymore? We're using MP3 players already... Shinji should consider buying himself an iPod. Looks a lot more cooler than his old walkman.

Maybe Anno has predicted an retro wave for old portable musicplayers for the year 2015.
Let us all meet in Neo-Tôkyô-3 (~35°14'30.94'' north 138°59'20.37'' east) in 2015 and check that... After that we could also "enjoy" the T.I. XD

The reason why Shinji has an SDAT (not a walkman for cassettes) is explained in Evangelion Chronicle, I'll be translating that section as soon as I can

Translation from Eva Chronicle Volume 1, Page 01-08.

"The SDAT is the portable audiotape device that Shinji owns. It uses a small form-factor media that looks like a cassette and is able to replay and record audio data. There was no standard for audio players before and after 2015, but the SDAT could be said as one of the few things that ordinary people are able to obtain.

Incidentally when Shinji engrosses himself in music, the track displayed on the quartz screen is always 25 or 26. From the fact that he often repeats specific tracks we are able to see the side of him who gets easily attached to things that affect him."

Okay fine let me say what you're thinking of saying- "it doesn't really answer the question of why they're still using SDATs in 2015."
Well there was no standard for audio players, so a variety of formats emerged, much like how we have casettes, CD, CDR, MP3, MiniDisc and some other forgotten formats (could anyone name me some?) It just so happened that Shinji chose SDAT out of the possible formats.

Also don't forget the world altering event in the Eva world that didn't happen in ours- Second Impact. That most certainly put household technology a few years back with wars and the n2 bomb dropped on Tokyo-3 on Sep. 20 2000.

(source: Evangelion Chronicle article I translated earlier on.)

Defiate wrote:The Development of Tokyo 3

Second Impact, the unprecedented disaster that occurred on the 13th of September, 2000, is said to have been caused by huge meteors that landed at tens of percents of the speed of light. The result of the disaster was that Earth’s axis became tilted, leading to abnormal weather throughout the world. Furthermore, in politically instable regions, disputes and tribal confrontations became apparent and all over the world disturbances of war arose. Japan was not able to escape from these effects and on September 20th of the same year, terrorists dropped an n2 bomb onto Old Tokyo (Tokyo-1/Former Tokyo). Due to the destruction of Old Tokyo, Matsumoto City of the Nagano Prefecture (Tokyo-2) was selected as the replacement capital of Japan. Incidentally, it was announced to the public that Tokyo-2 was only a temporary capital, and that there were plans underway to move all of the functions of the capital to Tokyo-3 in due time.

Simple Timeline/ Tokyo-3’s Developmental History

I really don't how else to title the topic, but has anyone ever noticed that the only songs Shinji ever listens to are tracks 25 and 26, and the last two eps. are 25 and 26, hmm, could it be a way to make Shinji feel better, and if you notice in End of Eva he doesn't even listen to it, which could be the crew's way of saying forget about eps 25 and 26, or a foreshadowing, any thoughts?
