What is Hideaki Anno doing now?

Now of course I know he's working on the last 2 Rebuild movies but didn't Anno leave GAINAX originally after 1997? I heard that Anno is working on some project with Miyazaki too.

Anno didn't "leave" GAINAX before starting Khara. He just didn't give shit about anime industry in general, really. He disengaged from it. During those years he directed most of Kare Kano in 97-98 (untill he got fed up with original mangaka etc. production shit and quit for good) untill he stopped and awesome show became shitty.

Then he focused all of his attention on live action filmmaking since he had become so nauseuted by the whole damn industry. He made Love&Pop (1998) and Shiki Jitsu (2000) out of which especially latter one was of high personal revelance to him (apparently he made first two live action films completely for himself, not caring much what about others thought about them). Bla bla other shit bla bla

in this millenium his only "big" actions were:

- Writing and Directing Short Film for Ghibli Museum (Destruction Of Imaginary Machines or something like that, goddamn I want to see that one but what can I do )
- Directing Cutie Honey live action flick (awesome camp)

And starting RoE in... 2006 was it?

He really has been "off" the industry for years prior to RoE. I guess the reasons were obvious since he was so tired of life amidst "beautifully adapted fictions" and "scandals amplificated into rawness".

I really want to see what he does after RoE. Animated film would be sweet

Guess it was just the Ghibli museum animations.

Anno has gone on to work with Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli on several short films which have been shown at the Ghibli Museum.

After EoE in 97, Anno worked on numerous Gainax series:

While he may not be actively employed at Gainax right now, it's my understanding that he still fulfills a board of directors type position, being one of the founders of the company.
