It was this or Mari. Misato won out because Fuyu-bot told me to and because Misato is love.

:misato_service: Enjoy!

I blink, still groogy as I snuggle against the blankets in my futon. Damn mornings, I don't want to go to work...

The peck at my feet from my other roomate, Pen Pen, wakes me up.

"Yeah, yeah.", I say while yawning and stretching. "I'll feed you in a moment."

Jeez, can't the Captain of Nerv get some decent shut-eye once in awhile? I already worked the late shift last night!

I stumble into the living room to turn on the TV, then make my way to the kitchen.

Looking around my messy apartment, my half-asleep brain remembers that today's the day a new Eva pilot will arrive. I'm supposed to pick him up and take him to Nerv.

Luckily no Angels have attacked since the Second Impact 15 years ago, but that doesn't mean they won't anytime soon... Besides, we need to make sure any pilots are prepared to stop the threat. Rei in Eva-00 and Asuka who's still training in Germany probably won't be enough.

Feeding Pen Pen some sardines and beer, I decide to start off my day with a nice breakfast of:

1) A Yebisu or two! Or three...

2) Some left-over steak (mmh, protein) and rice from last night.

3) Cereal, I guess.

I decide to have some beer for breakfast, after all. Nothing wrong with something to wake me up. A few cans should last me until lunch-time at least.

"....Downtown Tokyo-3, an unidentified object...making it's way. The JSSDF are doing what they can to alleviate the situation. News teams have been forbidden to get close to the scene."

I almost spit-take, turning, wide-eyed to the TV in the living room. Pen Pen calmly watches, curious.

Oh no. After 15 years, has the time finally come?

Downing my first and only beer, I throw on my clothes, say a quick goodbye to Pen Pen, then head out the apartment door, locking it.

***

Driving in my car to downtown Tokyo-3--where the boy, Shinji Ikari, and I were going to meet at about 11 AM or so--I debate on what my first move should be.

1) Contact Nerv about the situation?

2) Pick up Shinji first. I can contact Nerv later.

Pick up Shinji first; not much you and Nerv can do if the only available pilot gets killed.

I'll get Shinji-kun first, Nerv can wait.

I arrive just in time, considering the target--the 3rd Angel--is close to the poor kid, but thankfully doesn't seem to notice him.

I pull up my car directly in front of him, wasting no time in opening the door for him.

Managing a smile, I adjust my sunglasses and flatten out my standard Nerv outfit: a black knee-length dress and my red jacket.

"Sorry to keep you waiting! You're Ikari Shinji-kun, right? I'm here to pick you up."

The boy nods, quickly getting in.

***

I try to make some small talk with Shinji-kun, even explaining the current situation of the Angel attacking, but he seems to have other things on his mind.

Namely, the fact his father needs him for something.

...Fathers, huh? I can relate since I didn't get along with my own.

I can't help but wonder myself on why the Commander decided to call for Shinji on the same day an Angel attacked--it just seems too fishy--but decide not to worry about it so much.

Soon enough, we're at Nerv. It takes awhile to reach the place we're trying to get to, though. Ritsuko's with the others in the command center, so I escort Shinji to Eva-01.

"This is the Ultimate All-Purpose Humanoid Decisive Battle Weapon developed by humanity. The artificial human, Evangelion. That is Eva-01.", I explain.

"This is my father's work?"

Shinji's surprised by all this--but is there a hint of familiarity in his reaction, or is it just me?--although he's even more surprised when the Commander appears in the observation deck above.

"That's correct. It's been a while."

Shinji begins to shake as he stands next to me. "Father..."

Ikari smirks. "We're moving out."

WHAT?!

I mean... I knew Shinji was going to pilot, but now?! Granted, Rei's unable to pilot in her current condition with either Eva-00 OR Eva-01, but...

After some convincing on the Commander's part--including nearly forcing the injured Rei to pilot, Shinji agrees. Honestly, does he really have to go that far into guilt-tripping his own son?!

"You can't run away! Not from your father, and most of all, not from yourself!"

"I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away... I mustn't run away!"

Shinji looks up, determined. "I'll do it. I'll pilot."

***

Soon enough, I'm in the command center with Ritsuko and the others while Eva-01 is being prepared.

"Prepare to launch!", I order.

I then turn to the Commander, needing to make sure... "Should we really go through with this?"

Hands folded across his mouth, the Commander nods, calm as always. "Of course. If we lose now, humanity has no future."

I nod in reply, turning back to the computer screen which displays Eva-01. "Launch!"

Once Shinji and Eva-01 reach the city of Tokyo-3--it's a beautiful night, unfortunately, trying to remember the layout of Nerv took quite a bit of the day--he awaits my orders, gripping the controls tightly, gulping. It's not surprising he's nervous, who wouldn't be?

"Shinji-kun.", I begin, voice gentle. "Just relax, okay? As long as you're in the Eva and obey my orders, you'll be safe."

"Ri-right."

For now, I decide to give Shinji-kun the order to...

1) Just focus on walking.

2) Attack the 3rd Angel Sachiel with a long-range attack using the Pallet Gun.

3) Attack the Angel hand to hand using the Prog Knife.

gun sounds the most user-friendly.

also, what the hell good is walking going to do? given the way the eva supposedly resonds to thought, wouldn't it have made sense in the series if they gave him larger goals right off the bat rather then letting him get all bogged down on the mechanics of walking? It's not like we typically think about each step we take, ya know.

NemZ: I guess the reason they have Shinji first focus on that because being inside the Eva WILL/DOES take some adjusting to.
