Wow, they're cutting out all of those features and requiring a monthly subscription? It's now an easy pass. If I want to play an online MMO pokemon game, I'll play the one that's truer to the core games, even if it isn't really a pokemon game at all:

Seriously, check it out. It looks pretty cool.

^ Didn't Sun & Moon remove Gyms though? Maybe Nintendo is going for keeping things "fresh" by changing the status quo with the games. Though if they change too much, it won't feel like Pokemon anymore, will it?

I wanna get back into playing Pokemon but I don't know which game I should start with as I haven't played it since I lost My DSI XL and copy of Soul Silver on a school bus in high school. Also, I think Pokemon games should have multiple save files too.

Pokémon Go is heresy of the highest order. Its the antithesis of everything the games were originally built around, at least that's my opinion on the matter

^ Microtransactions are what I'm talking about. You shouldn't be able to buy your way to victory in Pokémon, you have to work for it. So having microtransactions defeats the purpose, especially in an app such as this where the advantage is skewed to those who can afford all the extras. While there are more people interacting with each other, it's no longer on a level playing field.

Speaking of Pokémon Go, it appears that an unknown Pokémon has appeared, confusing everyone. Popular speculation says this is Missingno, or a placeholder Pokémon for when errors occur.

Or (and this is a more likely possibility, IMHO) it's a sneak peak at Generation 8. After all, it was mentioned a while back that a new Pokemon would also be appearing in Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee.
https://gamerant.com/pokemon-lets-go-pi ... w-pokemon/

I have a hunch this could be that Pokemon.

^ I'm sure it is a sneak peek at Gen 8, like Munchlax being included in Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness as an unplayable character. But it nice to think that for a moment it was Missingno.

By the way, I have an odd question. So, I've been wondering, what kind of animal is Type Null and Silvally supposed to look like? I always considered the their overall shape to be like some sort of cat, given that their appearance reminds me of the Keythong (a creature sort of like a griffin, but without wings). Not to mention their animations in Refresh seem kind of cat-like.

But I was wondering if anyone had any other thoughts on the matter.

Well, looking at the hind legs, it looks very feline with the leg structure, but I would lean towards it being a liger because of its legendary status and inability to breed. Also, its behavior sounds like that of Liger Zero from Zoids, evolving once friendship is maxed out.

Interesting interpretation. I always saw it as a more general gryphon-type monster.

Well, Zoids bias and all. Though I've looked at Liger Zero enough, I'm confident in saying that Type: Null and Silvally are liger based. But I do see the gryphon-like features you're talking about, especially the front legs and tail thing.

In all the discussions of what Type:Null and Silvally are supposed to be that I've seen (and believe me, there are a lot) I've never seen that comparison brought up before. The usual conclusion people seem to reach about them is either "wingless griffin" or "weird-ass mixed up Frankenstein thing".

As for the Keythong, which I compared them to earlier, it looks like this: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/nVQJO
See the similarity (well, minus the tail)?

Well, I guess for legendary Pokemon its natural to lean more towards a mythical creature, because legendary are the mythical creatures of the Pokemon World. Still, I'm glad I came up with a unique view ^_^

And I do see the similarity with the Keythong, though the face was what threw me towards the liger as well.

I've actually thought that Type: Null and Silvally might be a homage to the Evangelion units. After all, all of its odd features considered, it's certainly a 'Frankstein's Monster' or 'Chimera' centered around the genetic information of one particular Pokemon by the name of Arceus, the 'Alpha Pokemon' (read: God Pokemon).

In Secret Lab A on the bottom floor of Aether Paradise in Pokemon Sun/Moon and Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, there are several dossiers that contain information about the creation of Silvally and its purpose. In particular, in File #5 it is noted that "Materials for development have been collected from the Canalave Library in the Sinnoh region. Plans are being drawn up for the specifications of the Type change program, known as the RKS system" - Arceus is central to the Sinnoh region mythology in the franchise (it created the legendary Pokemon Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina, among other things; one of the Pokemon anime films goes into more detail on this), and though the anagram 'RKS' isn't given n full it does sound deliberately like 'Arceus' when said aloud. As to its purpose, File #2 describes Silvally as an "Anti-UB Fighting-life form, B (Beast) K (killer)". A 'UB' here is short for Ultra Beast - strange and unknown beings from another dimension known as 'Ultra Space' which are eventually identified as Pokemon. In my opinion, Silvally's purpose - to battle the otherworldly Ultra Beasts in order to protect Alola and the Aether Paradise - is analogous to the Evangelion's purpose of battling the strange and aggressive Angels in order to protect Tokyo-3 and NERV.

And the similarities between Silvally and Evangelion units keep going. File #7 states that "incubation of the bio-frame is underway" and File #11 states that "Dummy test of the RKS System program has been completed" (italics mine) and "The transplantation of the RKS System program to the models is underway". This sounds less like someone stitching together a monster in a shed than it it does a group of scientists carefully and methodically engineering a bio-mechanical weapon from the genetic material of a living god. It goes further - File #18 notes the completion of the production of three models (identified as 'serial number' 01, 02, and 03) and adds that "All three models rejected the RKS System upon initialization during testing. Shortly after these initialization errors, all three models of Type: Full went berserk" (italics mine).

And, lastly, File #44 states "Models have been fitted with control masks to mitigate the effects of their rejection of the RKS system. Due to the implementation of these control masks, our RKS System initialization tests have failed." For those who haven't played the games, this is why the Pokemon called Type: Null has a mask, and why, when it masters itself through the tutelage of an able trainer, it shatters that mask - as it does in the anime - and it is recognized as a reformed monster, 'Silvally'. As an aside, its trainer is now capable of utilizing its RKS System, which allows it to assume any one of the eighteen Pokemon types from Fire to Ice, Bug to Rock, and so on.

Obviously this is all opinion, though I should stress that the similarities between Type:Null/Silvally and the Evangelion units have been apparent to me since I first played through Pokemon Sun version near the end of 2016. It's stuck with me since then, and occasionally I've thought about mention it here, however, after seeing some of the posts above, I thought this a good time to do so. I suppose I've been a bit long-winded about it but I hope enough of what I've written is clear so that the similarities are apparent for others.

So twitter is exploding right now; GF announced Pokemon Home the other day, it's like a cloud to store all your pokemon collection from all the past games. And then yesterday they said the new games (Sword/Shield) will not have the code for all pokemon because that's too much work - so not all pokemon will be transferable to the new games. In other words, this goes against their new Pokemon Home Service and it contradicts the 'gotta catch them all' theme. And frankly I agree, this is a very bad move on their part.

If this is true, this is a huge mistake on their part. Instead of making Kalju-Battles, they should use the resources to include all existing Pokemon, imo. Or delay the release.

That's what everyone is saying, to delay the game and make HD models for the mons they opted to cut out. I doubt they'll listen to the backlash, but we'll see.

And Masuda confirmed via USgamer interview:

"There are a couple of different parts to the thinking behind it, but really the biggest reason for it is just the sheer number of Pokemon. We already have well over 800 Pokemon species, and there's going to be more added in these games. And now that they're on the Nintendo Switch, we're creating it with much higher fidelity with higher quality animations. But even more than that, it's coming down to the battle system. We're making sure we can keep everything balanced and give all the Pokemon that appear in the games a chance to shine.
We knew at some point we weren't going to be able to indefinitely keep supporting all of the Pokemon, and we just found that Sword and Shield would probably be a good point to go back and reevaluate what would be the best selection of Pokemon that appeal to the widest audience while keeping into consideration the balance of the battle system. It isn't just going to be all-new Pokemon in the Galar region Pokedex; there's still going to be a lot of favorites that fans will be able to bring over that they've adventured with previously. But yeah, it was pretty much just balancing and getting this optimal selection of Pokemon for the adventure we wanted to provide".

Issue 1) For the highest grossing franchise in the world, it's kinda sad to hear an excuse that 900 pokemon is too much for them to program
Issue 2) For a franchise that markets their Pokemon as your friends that you can indefinitely carry forward with you, this is a contradiction
Issue 3) For a company that charges you money for their services to carry forward your ppkemon from past games, this decisions goes against business
Issue 4) For the first games on a home console that has more power than any prior systems they developed for, high pokemon volume is a sad excuse to cut out certain ones as the system is more than capable of handling it
Issue 5) In terms of balancing the competitive nature of the game, what's wrong with the old approach of having a ban list, it's so simple
