What music do you think the characters listen to?

A little-known fact about Misato is that she used to be really into the post-hardcore scene before third-wave emo commercialized it around the time of the Second Impact. She has a ton of old Fugazi and Rites of Spring albums.

Shinji is into a lot of really lame and angsty nu metal and Screamo, but that's understandable since he's just fourteen. Aoba just lent him an Anaal Nathrakh CD though, and he's been raiding Misato's record collection.

Asuka likes all of the bubblegum pop that one would associate with young teenage girlness. However, she has her grandpa's old album of Third Reich marching songs stashed in her closet that she brings out when the others aren't home.

Rei listens Dark Ambient, Noise, Industrial, Martial, and other weird shit that no one has ever heard of. In fact, Hanatarash and Godspeed You Black Emperor songs play in her head in a loop all day. You'd be just like her if that happened to you.

Put Asuka down for Techno. That's unbelievably big in Germany, and I don't see that changing in seven years.

As to the rest of the cast... do the Japanese actually have a notable market for any types of music other than idolpop, soundtracks, and traditional forms? Serious question.

Japan seems to come out with a lot of Noise and Noise Rock. This is, of course, a highly uneducated guess, but I'm willing to bet that Japanoise is a bigger export commodity than their mainstream (to them) music. You're more likely to find a Boredoms or Melt-Banana CD at an indie record store than you are to find a J-pop album. But once again, highly uneducated guess, I just came to that conclusion by poking around a lot of record stores.

And seriously, Rei almost has to listen to Dark Ambient. Tell me this isn't right up her alley. http://www.myspace.com/lustmord

Every type of mainstream music that exists here exists there. Pop, Alternative Rock, and Metal are the most popular. Indie Rock/Pop is also quite popluar.

Gendo likes Huey Lewis and the News. Gendo likes Huey Lewis and the News a lot. In fact, he likes them so much that after they broke up, he decided that the entire human race was better off being subsumed into one massive gestalt soul-entity in order to end pain and suffering.
One day, when Yui was still alive, she made an off-hand comment about how there are other bands in the world and that he should move on. The week after that, she was chosen for the contact experiment with Unit 01.
When Shinji was four, he broke Gendo's copy of Sports. Shinji was dropped off at his aunt and uncle's house the next day.

That's why we never see Rei listen to her avant garde industrial, because if Gendo ever found out that she doesn't like Huey Lewis, he'll send her into a volcano after an Angel without D-type equipment. She's like a jazz fan in Nazi Germany!

You forgot Feindflug. Other than that it's probably pretty accurate. i can't imagine Asuka liking Eurobeat though, it's not violent enough.
