don't know about frame but the page with Misato and Kaji's last kiss and he gives her that sad look just before the door closes then her reaction at the bottom of the page... man even I was kinda teared up

also in volume 9 when Kaowru sticks his head in the womens bathroom that Asukas in. i thought he was kinda a bastard in the begining of the volume but that scene brought back some of the childlike innocence that I think makes Kaowru such an appealling character

While I would have to review the lot (that I have) to make my pick, I expect that I would probably agree that that is one of the sweetest scenes (R/S 4FR ). Alas! there's no one individual frame though that stands out to encapsulate it.

I think that page fits in perfectly with the story, and is a sequence that Anno might have included in the anime but for the toss of a coin. That's the Asuka/Shinji relationship in a nutshell. Asuka desparately wants Shinji to be assertive and to declare his desire for her openly. Shinji reacts with fear or aparrent indifference, and Asuka feels rejected, so she strikes out at him with her words, and withdraws. That's the whole complicated dynamic there on one page... genius!

I actually feel sympathy for Shinji in that sequence - he's in a lose-lose situation. Express interest and that can get you slapped down as a male chauvinist only interested in women as pieces of meat; or react as he does, and be baited more.

I agree with you 100% on this. Its moments like this that make me laugh and make it matter more when the dark things hit later on.
