What was Anno trying to say with Eva?
Just what do you think Anno was trying to say with Eva? I know this is big broad question, but i've been wondering lately.
There was an EVA Nerd here, but now he's gone.
Although he's putting himself into the character of Shinji... I think just about everyone can relate to some facet of Evangelion. To me, he basically lays out the dilemmas of the human condition: the nature of insecurity, the nature of bonds, the struggle to find a reason to be. With it I think he stresses that the 'big questions' won't ever be answered... unless you find your own answers and motivations for them; that life will always be painful, but it can be acceptable if you find something to live for.
There's much more to my interpretation than that... but I'd have to think on it some more.

The titles of the two endings give a indication of what he was trying to say.
TV series: "Take care of yourself"
EoE: "I need you"
In the first case, that, as Tabris alluded to above, you have to find meaning and a reason to live within yourself; no one else can do that for you.
In the second case, that humans cannot live alone; we want to be wanted, and need to be needed. Or, as Misato puts it in #26': "I feel wanted, and that makes me happy"...

Their are times when Max here bothers the hell out of me with his banter. Their are times he makes me laugh with his crazy antics, now hes graduated to reading my MIND!
I came away from eva with two things clear
1.) Life is worth the risk, even if it means going out into the sunlight some times. (DOn't ask)
2.) (completely unrelated to 1) Red heads = hottness :P~~~~~~~

There are two kinds of value that you can have as a person; value that others see in you because of your actions, and value that you see in yourself (Shinji moved from the former to the latter). And DatDude, redheads do indeed = teh hawtness.
Only a complete and utter braggart, someone entirely obsessed with himself, would make a sig out of his own quote- feliwood

He was trying to say Plugsuits are fucking AWESOME!!!
No, but really why does everyone (I mean a lot of people) always think there's some hidden meaning in every thing. I think it's more likely that he just wrote a story and because he is human naturally things that affect him rubbed off on the show. I doubt that a lot of it was intetional, other people see stuff like that.
BTW does anyone else think that teen spirt is the one song that embodies the meaning of Eva. j/j

My take on it can partially be found in the 'religious symbolism' thread. The other part that I didn't mention so much about there, since it was not strictly relevant, was that as anyone who has ever gone through it in the past will know, a depressed person tends to build walls between themselves and others. An AT Field, if you like, to use Kaworu's interpretation of the phenomenon. When Anno made this, he was just recovering from being very depressed. It's about not denying yourself those vital connections to others in my view.
For my money, other than the notion that we can become more than what we are today, ("young boy, become a legend") the only other concept of serious importance in NGE is that of the Hedgehog's Dilemma. We all feel it. Some people try to deny they feel it, by claiming that they don't care about contact with others. Some try to overcome it by being excessively physically intimate. Others withdraw right into their own shells. Some, and they are, in my opinion, the luckiest and wisest ones, manage to overcome their fear, risk pain, and even feel pain, but not allow it to stop them from being close to others. I think that's what the series is about.

As Asuka would say, "A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial."
