Why sometimes we identify so much with some Evangelion characters, I'm asking this because, they are still children and we are adults.

This really confuses me sometimes.

This is just me?

What's confusing about this? All of us were children and teenagers once. (Some EGFers still are teenagers.)

...huh?

Anyway I identify with both Asuka and Shinji, even though I love Asuka and mostly dislike Shinji. I think this is because I share the most romantic and beautiful of my flaws with Asuka, but my real issues and temper are closer to Shinji, who disappoints me like I disappoint myself.

I still find plenty to interest me in Eva, and other anime, in spite of no longer being a child. Growing up and learning to understand life better is a process that should never stop.

Like Reichu says -- we were all 14 once (except for the occasional 13 year old who posts here, like Sachi  ).

Each of the characters -- and there are more than just the children of Class 2-A in the series -- is screwed up in one way or another; it's just a case of finding the ones you share or have shared issues with. For me, some of what Asuka went through managed to catch old wounds that I had thought long scarred over, but equally I can see bits of myself in both Rei and Kozo (as in "yes, that's what I would be doing under the same circumstances").

Thanks everybody for participating !
I will talk a little about me, I had always been the best student on my class, winning some sports competitions, best grades.

But in my home, my dad is a executive from a great bank, my mother was engaged on humanitarian causes,

So I was always alone on my house, I need to grow(as person) by myself.

When I reach the age to university, I joined on one of the bests universities of my country. In the first year, I was invited to a internship on the PhD laboratory.

But someday i saw that I was alone, while my friends are having fun, making other friends, this day i saw, that all i had made all I had done, only to be regarded by my fathers.

So I feel a little like Asuka. Sorry for this long text and for disembosom.

Now i stopped the course on the university and I am thinking what I real want to do on my life.

PS: Reichu avatar is scaring.

They're just very lifelike.
Also, there's people who have similar complexes and continue with them into adulthood...

As for me personally. Hm. I would say the characters most like me would the second Rei or Mari, where my 13 year old self when I first watched EVA was mostly like Rei, and my current self closer to Mari, allthough they're both awesome and more admirable than me in many ways - I sort of hope to live up to them, Rei in particular (as did the series in general, especially ep 24 and 25)

I've always had problems with connecting with other people, there were many of these "popular girls" teasing me, and I guess I was busy thinking about a lot of big questions that the others weren't, or at least, I couldn't connect to them, and I spent a lot of time wondering about my own insignificance and just what made me different...
I didn't have as much of a social drive as the others either, but that didn't completely preclude me from lonely moments.
That image of her reading advanced literature in the schoolyard and not getting how saying no to an offer of friendship may offend people - there's not really a way to express "neutrality" nowadays, is there? Or the way her classmates were talking about her.
straight out of my life... Except she was still such a caring, good person who fought for and protected what was important to her, and even managed to however briefly forge a genuine connection in the hell of her life... That just really touched me.
I guess this is why I'm rather protective about her, and sort of by extension her interactions with Shinji.

As for Mari, I'm more comfortable with my weirdness nowadays, I admire how she lets nothing touch her, and I also suffer from inpractical oversized chest and myopia XD And how she just blurts everything out and likes to have her space to do it XD
You'd probsbly find my outward demeanor matching her most. I don't have a problem with the talking process itself, just saying it right without it comming off too weird.
Somehow, there are not so many noisy, but still aloof people in fiction. Now there's Mari.

That said, why I don't generally identify with Misato, some segments in ep 12 and 25 where she talks about my father spoke right to my heart.

Oh, Anno, just how do u female psychology so well?

I wanted to hold Tsubame more

I was under the impression that people identify with characters in Evangelion
because they can understand what Shinji, Asuka and Rei are going thru in terms of dealing with depression
finding your place in the world, having to face the many hardships in life
and learning to love yourself among other things.
To me it doesn't matter if the main characters are only 14
or so if I can relate to them I will and I do.

I genuinely love how good Evangelion hurts

Having dealt with depression, I understand what NGE's Children go through. Their lives are credible and human and I can sympathize with them all.

I'm 28 but it doesn't matter. I've been a teenager and a bit of me still is, because of my self-esteem issues and other matters.

I think the beauty of NGE is in its empathy and journey to catharsis.

Note: I'm no longer the author of the fanfiction "Eva Brothers from Cybertron". I passed authorship to a friend (Lia Dospetti) who's turning it into her own work, while still maintaining homages to NGE and Transformers, as well as Star Trek. I still draw the artworks, though, and I have some fragments of the old fanfic here.

I can identify with wanting to be tough like Asuka, but still wanting my parents' love, I can identify with Shinji wanting attention, acceptance, and praise from his father, I also always have headphones in to drown out reality. I can identify with Rei's social awkardness and having to be obedient all the time, I can even identify with Misato's struggle that even though I may not get along with my father, I often desire the traits that he has.

I guess, whether anyone will admit it or not we all can identify Eva's characters somehow. ^_^

It's weird for me to comprehend how a bunch of nerdy animators could ever have come up with such compelling characters as the Children. Maybe I'm overestimating the originality of NGE, and Anno may have just copied a bunch of 80's anime tropes and switched them up.

Doesn't matter! I saw NGE and EoE a decade after they first came out and loved it. Honestly, I felt Anno's personal direction to be the deciding factor in Eva's quality. Having read Sadamoto's manga, and having followed Rebuild casually, I must say that NGE was Anno's 'golden' period of crafting compelling drama.

There's something pathetically human about eva's cast that I accept, and there's a certain thrill I feel from their experiences in the Eva universe. This connection feels genuine and natural, but it is really weird to think about!

Funny you should say that...

if Rei was male, he'd be the awesomely silent/cool/calm guy.
When he rushes that angel with an N2 mine under his arm sacrificing his life ... that is the scene where MANLY TEARS flow for A MAN'S WAY OF LIFE AND DEATH.
Asuka, if a man, would be an awesomely HOT BLOODED pilot. And pervy with his advances on Shinji, but a little tsundere.
And Shinji, as a weak little girl, as a girl, puts it into context. You'd be fapping furiously to Shinjiko every night because of her shy demeanour
And with girl Kaworu, Shinji x Kaworu would be amazingly hot.

I don't know about that. I might still hate her guts... But I think you might be onto something when you're implying that we'd give shinjiko more leeway. Gender equality where?!
"0" is the past, "1" is the future, but "the present" is nowhere - this is an undeniable logic.
Among the countless parallel lines, I settle on "blasphemy" as my choice.
