Kaoru Nagisa's four English voice actors

(I'd've included Jerry Jewell, his voice in the New Theatrical Editions, but I wanted to stick to Neon Genesis Evangelion. He's not a bad Kaoru though.)

Personal thoughts:
I kinda like Kyle Sturdivant. He's not the best actor, but his intonation is interesting to me, and his voice sounds nice and soft.
Greg Ayres is a pretty good Kaoru imo, he's probably better than Sturdivant even if I like the latter's voice.
Aaron Krohn is... fine. He doesn't sound bad but he doesn't sound that good either.
I like Clifford Chapin, he has a very low-key but interesting performance.

Personal favorite is probably Greg Ayres, though Kyle Sturdivant comes close.

Somehow, Netflix version seems to go well with Kaworu IMO rather than the other 3 versions.

Kyle Sturdivant is definitely playing up some flamboyant inflection, though he doesn't do it to an absurd extent. It's fine in the "90's show trying to take gays seriously" kind of way, but it ultimately kinda robs the "will they, won't they?" from the episode's narrative. We already know exactly how he's gonna try to get close to Shinji as soon as he open his mouth. (To be fair, I don't know if Akira Ishida "sounds gay" in the Japanese dub. I'm not familiar enough with Japanese voice acting tropes to tell what's going on there. For all I know, they both could have given away Kaworu's intentions from the very first line delivery in the episode.)

Greg Ayres sounds alright, I guess. He sounds like typical English anime dub to me, so I find him par for the course.

Aaron Krohn sounds like either a children's show host or a business man introducing himself, and it feels all sorts of weird and wrong. (But I wouldn't mind him reading me the accounting reports every night before bed.)

Clifford Chapin is reading more natural-sounding lines at first. "Who doesn't?" sounds better to me than "Everyone knows who you are." "Worthy of me grace," on the other hand, will never sound natural to me, but Clifford tries. He's probably the best on a technical level. Regardless of how natural the lines he reads are written, he's definitely selling it the best of the four.

Considering the abysmal translation, the actors miraculously managed to make it at least seem natural. I really wonder how anybody could ever watch this dub and not burst out laughing.
But then I remember that most people aren't capable to appreciate the sheer craftsmanship on display, managing to create a super complex meta-ridden relationship in like 10 Minutes, but resort to "iRe ThEy GonNa FucK ThO"



Kyle Sturdivant - not a good actor and the stereotypical "fake gay lisp" is unnecessary, disgusting and does his character a grave disservice.
Greg Ayres - very Animeish, but that doesn't need to be a bad thing per se. I really like his timbre, there's a deep resonance oscillating in tandem to his fake teenage voice. Interesting!
Aaron Krohn - "I'm Q'WAHRU" Definitely the worst.
Netflix - once again, by far the most professional and similar in tone to the original. But you can hear that they were either rushed or it was a very careless production.
It's like a cheap knockoff of some brand. Never soars high, but it's functional.
