I know that this is almost universally hated but I think it's a worthwhile addition for a bit of a chuckle, even if they do get bits wrong. I was just wondering, is it the levity that people hate so much?

Amanda Winn Lee just needs to get knocked off her high horse, and ban alcohol from her life.

See, the problem is simple. The levity is fine. The problem is that Amanda Winn Lee and her cohorts are so abso****inglutely mindbendingly STUPID when it comes to Evangelion, it defies logic. Example, you ask? The EoE scene where is shows Kaji shot and then Asuka slaps Shinji. The original audio was of a gunshot. When replaced to a slap for the English dub, Amanda Winn Lee said the "original slap audio" sounded like a gunshot.

I rest my case.

Actually, it's the other way around. It was originally a slap, and AWL put in a gunshot.

I'm so glad I made this video.

I also like how she:

A) Thinks there's no word for "I" in Japanese.
B) Tells people there's no word for "I" in Japanese.

...which any first semester Japanese student can tell you is completely bogus.

I knew the Japanese word for "I" when I first started watching anime, how stupid can one person be?

Apparently this stupid.

Don't blame her. She comes from a generation that arrived a little too late for anime fandom.

It's not just "bits" that they get wrong; it's nearly everything. All the commentary shows is that AWL knew next to nothing about the show she was dubbing.

If you (AWL) don't know something, don't make up nonsense about it.

I have spend no more than US$16.95 on my Japanese education and I have a feeling I have a better grasp of the language than her.

I was going to call her a quote/unquote professional, but I didn't want to inadvertantly insult anyone else.

I actually laughed at that. In the middle of class too. Image

It's their job to make crap up so they can earn their wages.

I really, really hate her voice. Even before she said anything about Eva, just when she was introducing herself. Her performance as Rei was decent compared to most of the others, but I just don't like her voice.

Really, if MangaEnt et al. ever need to do market research on what not to include/use as a sales point for their latest import(s), they should look in forums (fora?) like these.

I spend nothing on my Japanese education and learn what I can from fansubs in my spare time and I know more than she does. Isn't that scary?

@Reichu: Oh, I messed up.

After watching the ADV Director/VA commentary track, I have to say that I'll probably never watch another ADV dub-related extra again. Ever.

In the case of Evangelion, I thought the dub sucked. I can't imagine why I'd want to watch an extra commentary feature to find out why it sucked. The suckage is self-evident.

Haha - in looking for pictures of Amanda Winn Lee, I found a photo of her in the same shot as Trish LeDoux. Man, if ever there was a time and a place for a comet to do some good by striking the Earth, that would've been one of them...

Her job is to voice act, and not act like a celebrity.

Evangelion's dub did not "suck," but certain actors did fail. I think the worst voices fall somewhere in between Shinji or Rei, ignoring certain VA's who can't pronounce Japanese words. I think the Spanish's version of Shinji was much better, his voice seemed normal, and most of the male characters had fitting SPanish VAs, yet the female characters in the Spanish dub did not have good or meorable VAs. French dub was mediocre, they had to talk fast though to fit the mouths.

That'd be your opinion. That wouldn't be mine. There are lots of dubs I like, and some that I outright prefer to the original voice track - Evangelion's not one of them. And I'm normally a huge Megumi Hayashibara fan, too.

Remember, kids: This thread is about the Commentary of Evil, not NGE's dub. Please, save this thread while there's still time.

The worst part of the dub was Tiffany Grant... but Tiffany actually spoke German which was great

Admanda sounded like a complete airhead though
