Fuyutsuki's intent (spoilers)

I just got the 3rd volume of the platinum editions!^^ I'm a bit confused about a line Fuyutsuki says.

In episode 12, Fuyutsuki and Gendo are at the north pole, and Fuyutsuki argues with him saying that "he rather live in a world with people, no matter how stained with sin." Then why is he cooperating with Gendo? Isn't Gendo trying to get to Yui by uniting all people? What's his angle? I've never understood his character. Any ideas?

Also, I was amazed that Studio Ghibli animated episode 11! It says so in the booklet. Pretty cool.

i've never understood that line, myself-- whes Sadamoto adapted that scene to the manga, one of the few changes he made was to take that line out.

maybe i'm just forgetting all my Eva, but perhaps this is a clue about Gendou's third impact vs. Seele's Third Impact (which actually happens). maybe if Gendou had had his way, only he and Yui would somehow be reunited. maybe everyone else would remain human and unaffected by it.

The full conversation:
Kouzou: There's no allowance for the existence of living things in this
world of death called Antarctica.

Kouzou: Maybe we should just call it "Hell".

Gendou: Nevertheless, we human beings are standing here, existing as
living things.

Kouzou: Because we're protected by the power of science.

Gendou: Science is human power.

Kouzou: It's that arrogance that caused the tragedy 15 years ago, the
Second Impact. This scene is the result. It's too harsh a
punishment for us, though, considering the crime. This is just
like the Dead Sea!

Gendou: And yet this is a purified world, a world lacking the impurity
of the original sin.

Kouzou: I hope for a world where people can live, no matter how steeped
in sin.

The "sin" Gendo reffered to either reffered to the genuine original sin, or, most likely, referring man's arrogant use of science.

While Fuyutsuki suggests what happened on the day of Second Impact was too great a punishment for the crime, and Gendo retaliates, saying they now live in a purified world because of it. Fuyutsuki then expresses his disagreement.

Gendo's plan wasn't really to keep all of humanity in a merged state, he planned to cancel Third Impact after he was reunited with Yui.

That's what I got out of the conversation.

No I don't think so he tells Rei in EoE " Merg all sole's into one, and then take me to my Yui's side".

Also if memory serves I think Shinji needed to come back so every one else could, becuase Rei more or less gave control of instrumentality to him.

I think if Gendo got his way he'd be with Yui and the rest of us would be stuck.

I think that Fuyutsuki is cooperating with Gendo because he has feelings for Yui as well. After all, when Rei comes to dissolve his AT field, she comes to him in the form of Yui.
A person...is a shadow which we can never penetrate, of which there can be no such thing as direct knowledge, with respect to which we form countless beliefs, based upon words and sometimes actions, neither of which can give us anything but inadequate and as it proves contradictory information-a shadow behind which we can alternately imagine, with equal justification, that there burns the flame of hatred and of love.

I agree, but I bet if he had the chance he would of tried to take gendo's place so that he would be with Yui instead.

If you watch #21' carefully, it is obvious that Fuyutsuki ended up becoming a member of Gehirn because Yui wanted him there, as a decent non-lunatic that she knew she could trust to be on her side, given the inevitable conflict of her ideas and intentions versus those of SEELE (note how she confides in him regarding her true intentions in the scene at the Ashinoko levee).

When it comes to Fuyutsuki, I've always looked ay it this way: Fuyutsuki was dead set on exposing everything, and then he becomes absolutely loyal to Gendo and Nerv. Fuyutsuki represents (to me) the "nobleness" and good of Nerv and Gendo. Or at the very least, he vindicates Gendo and Nerv's cause. I think of all the members of Nerv, he is in the know of things as much as Gendo and Seele.

But he may have changed his mind only because wanted him to help Gendo.

I've always been a little confused as to how Fuyutsuki became one of the people closest to Gendo (in the sense that Fuyutsuki is one of the very few people Gendo is ever seen actually talking to, and probably the only person he ever seems to positively discuss anything with) when he apparently started out by loathing him, and later trying to expose his transgressions.
I guess we'll never know what really swayed him, but I agree Fuyutsuki is one of the 'nobler' characters in the series, and he always seems to hold consideration for people and humanity above all others. Maybe seeing just what Yui's research had spawned convinced him that to follow it and Gendo was the best cause in a bad situation. Other specialists were already working together on the project (Naoko Akagi for example) and Yui his former student, and perhaps he was simply drawn in by their hopes and the enormity of the secret project. It is ironic he ends up next to Gendo in NERV, and perhaps he would make a better commander, except that his character suggests he wouldn't have wanted the responsibility. What we do know about him, though, is that he wanted the truth, and maybe his joining NERV was his just his way of getting it.

Gendo and Fuyutsuki frequently disagree on things, which is interesting. Fuyutsuki is more of a philanthropist, I'd suggest, usually there to remind Gendo of the risks and costs of his decisions. Gendo, on the other hand, is more single-minded and frequently disregards them, but this close-minded and ruthless approach is what more often than not gets the job done. I suppose in a way, Fuyutsuki is Gendo's 'voice of reason', constantly warring with Gendo's own whims, in a similar way that Misato is Shinji's... and both are frequently disregarded. To me, they kind of represent the balance/contention of care and carelessness that may be needed to achieve a difficult goal.

Fuyutsuki's with Gendo because otherwise he'd be dead.

Okay, that's simplifying things a bit, but I just had to say it.

One thing I've often wondered about is how the heck Gendo and Kozo ended up wielding what is basically military power after the Gehirn --> Nerv switchover. They were both scientist-geeks, just the guys in the white coats. How does one magically go from being a mad scientist to being a (Vice) Commander of a military organization?

*whimpers* I know, I know... but he surely - having been so determined to expose the truth for all to see (and let's face it, he must have known there'd be consequences for him) - strikes me as a 'nobler' character than one who'd just shack up with Gendo in fear for his life.

I've no idea, but given the world situation at the time, I'd imagine anyone with any potential skill for rebuilding/protecting it would have been viewed as a highly valuable asset, and probably trained in all sorts of fields, not only to maximise their productivity, but also as a contingency in the event of a loss of capable personnel... in other words, everyone's a tech genius/improv master.

Well NERV isn't exactly a military organization - it's basically just a bunch of geeks and nerds with a few giant humanoid robots at their disposal. Gendou and Kozo seem perfect to lead them. :D

While I can't recall the exact deal offhand, Nerv definitely has military, erm, connotations that Gehirn lacked. Note also that many of the key personnel (excluding technology department geeks like Ritsuko) have military titles. And Misato has a military background, despite being a slob and an alcoholic. :P

Really, when a 29-year-old drunk can ascend to Third in Command, why would you worry yourself over the presence of military power in NERV?

_you can't do anything, so don't even try
_get some help
_don't do what sonic does

Oh come on, Misato is not a drunk. SHE GETS HAMMERED ONCE! ONCE YOU HEAR ME! And she stops when something bad happens, so leave the poor woman alone!

SHE IS NOT A DRUNK! She just likes alcohol... the people who previously lived in that apartment were a bit messy.
