I REALLY love the anime NOIR.

It's super low budget and super repetitive but it has an excellent sense of European action movie aesthetic style rarely found in anime (think Leon: The Professional) and is wonderfully devoid of the usual garbage - sexy underage female protagonists, squeaky voices, etc - that kills most anime for me. The filmmaker who did it, Koichi Mashimo, promised making a trilogy of series about "Girls With Guns" that as a concept REALLY speaks to my genre interests! Alas the following two series in the trilogy are pretty awful. Madlax because it embraces overly sexualizing the female characters, poor writing and a failed attempt to be part Evangelion mind-twister and part Luc Besson action story. The final series El Cazador de la Bruja is too devoid of any real personality to resonate.

Oh well. One out of three ain't bad.

I just finished Noir and it was pretentious stupid crap with really dumb combat. I mean the fights are a complete laughing stock. Speaking of stock, half the series feels like stock footage as they keep replaying the same shots over and over again. Also the plot is beyond retarded. I'm gonna lay something bare for a lot of you: Kirika kills Mirielle's parents with a gun when she was 4. Mirielle must have been like 7 or 8. It's so absolutely stupid to see this little child assassin killing adults successfully. In all the show is always terrible like this throughout. People often stand there and shoot, or stand there and miss, or just stand there and get shot. It's cheap beyond belief. Btw the other two series, Madlax and Del Taco Whatever, each look far far more entertaining from clips I've seen; I'll find out for sure someday.

Anyway my favorite other anime are Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Welcome to the NHK, Nichijou, and Mushishi.
Check out my AMVs: Kaji/Misato in "18 Apostolos" & Kaworu and the Harpies in "The Beast That Shouted 'I' at the Heart of the World" w/ music by Esselfortium!!

^ All valid complaints. Can't argue against them. It sure is a series done on a nonexistent budget. But as a filmmaker I loved the style they used with their limited production and the whole series sure worked for me. Didn't hurt that the music is awesome.

I can't persuade you to NOT see the other two series enough. They are really bad.

Urobuchi had no hand in Kara no Kyoukai whatsoever, it was written by Kinoko Nasu.

I regularly recommend Angel's Egg - it's a wonderful film. I'm glad you like it too.

Well, it's not that popular in the first place but I did recommend it to some friends who aren't even that much into anime and they liked it. Though one of them was only convinced when I explained my thoughts to him.

Lots of people just don't like narratives with that kind of exposition and structure.

Now that I've finished the Tatami Galaxy, it's now sitting at #4. Maybe someday I'll bump the rating up to a 5/5 if I rewatch it sometime.

Nice, I've seen it years ago, but it's still nr.7 for me. You should check out other works by Yuasa, the same director, the guy is masterful.

I watched Kaiba alongside Tatami, and while that had some great aspects (The settings are amazing, the premise is original, and what can I say about the OST that hasn't been said), the story becomes a bit more predictable as the ending comes.

Mind Game and Ping Pong are his other best works besides those. There's also a fifteen minute short by him for the Genius Party compilation that's charming and really imaginative. Kemonozume is probably considered his weakest series but you'll still like it if you enjoy his directing in general.

Personally I liked Kaiba the most and Tatami after that. But he's my favorite director working in animation, so there isn't really any work by him I didn't like.
