TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - After slipping on a mask for Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire might be slipping into a giant robot for "Robotech."

After a lengthy negotiation, Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up feature rights to "Robotech," a 1980s Japanese cartoon series with giant robots known as mechas. Maguire is eyeing the lead role, and will serve as a producer.

Robotech doesn't count as anime.

I can see both positions on that particular argument. For me, Robotech got me into anime. It was the catalyst which started it all. People have been daydreaming of a Robotech live-action movie since forever, really. I bet a bunch of people on Robotech forums had to change their shorts after the above news item came out of nowhere today. In any case, the success of Transformers is directly attributed to the likelihood of Robotech occurring (which, of course, isn't a done deal - the article just says that the project has been licensed). It also mentions a Voltron movie has been green-lighted too, and I never would have seen that coming in a zillion years - I never knew it to have anywhere near the popularity other shows did in that era.

I do dispute the claim that LAEM will never happen, though - I bet a lot of people never would have thought Rebuild would be dreamed up. I know me and other Robotech fans I know never expected Robotech to make it, as much as we wanted it to. But especially considering the apparent perpetual repackaging and remarketing of Evangelion in the Japanese market (they're on potato chip bags for fnord's sakes), I wouldn't dare rule anything out, including LAEM.

Robotech is three anime edited together with a cringe-inducing dub on top.

Damn and blast Carl Macek!

Nope, but the three shows that comprise it do.

Come on now. It was a very different time back then, and he did a lot to usher in modern anime fandom. Give the guy some credit. Editing the three shows together was probably the only way they could bring those shows over, and if they didn't edit the hell out of those early imports, who knows if they ever would have aired anime?

Exactly my take on it. Anime purists may hate what Macek did to anime, but frankly I think he did a lot for anime, at least here in North America.

Looking back on it now, Robotech pales in comparison to lots of other anime I see in modern times. But in the same vein, while Airwolf kicked butt, I think 24 beats it hands-down.

Agreed. Robotech was one of the first anime I saw, albeit it was as repeats in 98 or so on Toonami.

It's still surprising, though, that in the modern day they'd give an edited TV-dub even a chance as a legitimate example to base a live-action movie out of. We should still give Robotech credit for what it did, but it seems weird to keep homaging it and keeping it alive.

Robotech is weird that way, though. I could have sworn I saw busts marketed under the characters' Americanized names, and of course the series was re-released instead of going under.

I guess it just looks strange from the perspective of late-90s//00's fandom.

I agree that Robotech gets more flak than it deserves. Compare it to some of the more recent hackjobs like One Piece or even Sailor Moon, and there's a huge difference. The show got away with a lot--characters died, drank alcohol, exchanged sexual innuendo and even dressed in drag. Macek deserves credit for not dumbing down the show and pretending (like GI Joe did) that no one ever gets hurt in war.

As for the live action movie...keeping in mind all the complicated rights issues involved with Robotech, I wouldn't expect the movie to be an adaptation of the Macross Saga (except for maybe naming the main character Rick Hunter). I'll give it a chance, but if it sucks, meh, I'll just watch Do You Remember Love? for the tenth time.

Do NOT get me started on how Sailormoon was fucked up in the States! >__<

Yeah, Dic and Cloverway supposedly did what they had to do, but still...

Around the time that Sailor Stars was being made, DiC entertainment and Saban were battling for the rights to Sailor Moon. DiC wanted to make the anime a "cartoon" for little girls to watch on Saturday morning, this was bad, but at least it was better than what a company called Toonmakers wanted to do. Toonmakers wanted to make it half live action/half animation (original animation, not the Japanese animation). They wanted to redo Sailor Moon in the same way "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" was done. Luckily for us though (Lucky!?!?), DiC was the one who got the rights. DiC took the show and then completely changed it around to make it "cartoony". Characters were changed (one was even changed gender) and plot elements were erased. In total, 65 episodes were dubbed with 7 episodes being cut by DiC, some of which for reasons unknown. When Sailor Moon was syndicated, it did very poorly. After the 65 episode package was done, DiC basically gave up on the show. The USA network, followed later by the Cartoon Network, bought the episodes to air on their station, and when they started airing the show, the ratings went through the roof, especially when Cartoon Network started showing the show. Cartoon Network viewers LOVED Sailor Moon. This convinced DiC to produce 120 more episodes for the anime, but since fans and advertisers were upset at their last move of leaving the series off at a cliff hanger point, they decided to cut it down to 17 episodes, which would bring the series to the end of "R". After this, DiC did SOMETHING (we're not sure what) that made them in breech of their contract to hold the rights to Sailor Moon. Since there was a high demand for more episodes, Toei's representatives in the United States, Cloverway, picked up where DiC had left off. Cloverway got permission to dub the "S" and "SuperS" seasons of Sailor Moon. While these episodes were a step up from the DiC dubbed episodes, using the original music and staying closer to the original story, these episodes were a let down for fans hoping that Sailor Moon would stay faithful to the original.
