a single symbol
I was wondering if someone could explain the weird "mellow gold/infinite" symbol the the MP evas make around the uber-rei in EoE? I can't seem to find a screen shot of it anywhere...

I have no idea exactly what this thing is supposed to be, either.

Yes, that! Thank you! I understand that their ATF's are resonating, but I feel like it has to have more meaning than that. More meaning than showing some AT-power and looking groovy. It just doesn't seem like, at that point in the movie especially, that it could mean nothing. Beautiful imagery, though.
In the case of unit-01's cross action, it is about to be crucified. If I'm not mistaken, it has the cross for just a few more scenes also. Maybe the scene just before that happens?

Uh oh. You just cast the Eva Yojimbo summon spell.
Awesomely Shitty

-On EMF, as a thread becomes longer, the likelihood that fem-Kaworu will be mentioned increases exponentially.
-the only English language novel actually being developed in parallel to its Japanese version involving a pan-human Soviet in a galactic struggle to survive and to export the communist utopia/revolution to all the down trodden alien class and race- one of the premise being that Khrushchev remains and has abandoned Lysenko stupidity

Eva Yojimbo summon spell? You mean theoretical paradox? Or just the fanwanking?
Fanwanking. The biggest meaning behind that symbol is probably the same for the crosses being put in Eva. It just looks cool.
EVANGERIONANIME is stupid

You mean the cross-shaped explosions in the series? Because I'm pretty much under the impression that all of the symbolism in EoE has meaning. The crosses at the end with all of the worlds ecstatic roaring was everybody's rei-induced final moment of bliss (like maya's brush with ritsuko). It might be that it has no meaning, but the movie is of an entirely different caliber than the series...

The meaninng of a Celtic symbol can vary greatly. It can change depending on the tribe, the time period, and the favorite gods and goddesses of the region. In this modern era of Celtic appreciation many designs have been assigned various meanings. A symbol is born when a group of people agree that an artistic motif will carry a certain meaning. This can also vary from region and culture, from one time period to another. One symbol design and carrying more than one meaning. The best example is the Swastika. Before being used by the Nazi party in the Germany of the 30's and 40's, the Swastika was reverred as a cross motif in the Celtic world, a sacred symbol for the Hindus meaning 'let good-prevail' and an American Indian sign representing the sun, the winds or the four directions.

Of course, many of the symbols you described are simple to draw. That one, not so much.
I'll agree that there many different meanings to symbols, and it would be interesting to find the different meanings that they have and compare. (Although, in this case, I'll just say it was Anno Syndrome, or adding of random symbolism into a scene to make it cooler)
Here, though, I was just pointing out that it looked a lot like a Celtic interwoven lace thing.
Occam's Razor: The simplest explanation is generally the correct one.
Essel's Corollary: The simplest explanation is never the fanon one.

Some Celtic symbols are swirls, including swirls that represent the cycling of the sun between equinoxes, others that seem to beat like a living heart when exposed to flickering light. There's a vast category of those types.
I doubt this is Celtic, somehow. It looks somewhat familiar to me, but I can't recall where I've seen it.
