This is something that has always bugged me about the series. Worse yet he didn't even learn from it, as he did it again later on.

So my answer would be-- I would never have gotten into the situation in the first place, because I wouldn't have gone in without permission.

I mean really, I rarely put myself in Ayanami's shoes, but in this case I did, so that I could honestly answer the question.

If I was the one that Shinji had walked in on/groped, he'd be leaving the appartment less an hand.

Keep in mind that in anime, pretty much everybody's beautiful, except those meant to be ugly. Maybe the tempation for the nasty wouldn't even be that great for anyone.

I really can't see Shinji, or myself for that matter, not going inside.

First off Shinji was told to deliver the damn card to Rei.
He would try to do as he was told.

I would have been pissed that nobody was there after I'd taken the trouble of walking all the way to the bad part of town on a hot day.

I would have gone in after knocking for awhile.

So Shinji steps inside and sees the place looks empty.
He takes off his shoes and goes on in.

Now I would have done the same thing, but only so I could get to the kitchen, it's right next to the door there, and set the card on the counter.
There, I'm done, bye bye nasty apartment!

Shinji goes all the way into the apartment, probably out of curiosity, which I'll admit mighy be a factor for me, but mostly ou of thick headedness.

Fast forward...

So Shinji ends up atop a very naked Rei, and I dobt the whole everybody looks hot in anime excuse holds up here because Touji and kensuke commented on it earlier that episode, and get real, Rei's hot.

I'd say Asuka Langley is exempt from this question since she is a girl, thus upon not hearing a answer at the door, she would have concluded Rei was gone or 'busy' and not barged into the apartment like a more hard headed male like me, and even if she had gone in, a naked girl probably wouldn't have phased her like it would Shinji, and there is probably ZERO chance of her ending up on top of said naked Rei.

Anyway, I would get up and out of there before the situation got any more complicated.
I can imagine a very uncomfortable day at NERV, hoping Rei didn't say anything I wouldn't be able to deny.

Me: So...We don't have to tell the commander about what happened right?

Rei: Happened?

Me: Yeah, uhh...at your apartment.

Rei: ...

I've lived with a lot of girls (get your mind out of the gutter) and going into their rooms/apartments without persmission is just seriously WRONG.
