The Saddest, Most Depressing Films/Series/Music/etc.

This isn't quite depressing, but recently I just saw "The Departed" and wow, it certainly made me feel empty by the end.

Surprinsingly, Saturday night's episode of Eureka 7. It's very rarely that I can empathyze with Anime characters, but damn I really felt sad for Anemone.

Oho, but Shamonan, you forgot something about what I posted; Lucy's music box stopped playing. Then Nyuu's clock started working again. To me, that's so obviously symbolic that this was the end of "Lucy"; the horns do indeed symbolize the cutting off of her ties as a Dilco, though. IIRC, wasn't the transformations into Nyuu/Lucy uncontrollable? Lucy never ran away into Nyuu's psyche; she positively hated how she would "turn stupid".

The "Death of Lucy" itself, however, could be interpreted any number of ways. Her death as a Diclo, her death as her former self, or the death of the actual "Lucy" personality. You're proposing the latter, largely on the idea that the clock that Nyu was working on starts ticking.

While that's the simple explanation that'snot the only way it can be interpreted. To a very large extent, Nyu was just a representation of the innocence in Lucy. The two were the absolute extremes of a personality. Considering the ending is symbolic, it's possible that it's merely the symbolic death of Lucy, and her return to innocence.

However, that's just one interpretation, and I'm not advocating this is right. I understand both yours and Shamonan's POV.

I'm very sorry for breaking into this thread, but I've just seen the last
episode of "Elfen Lied", and I don't think either Lucy or Nyu survived.

I think that Lucy sacrificed herself to keep the attention off those
she considered friends. Had she survived the execution, the army and
that secret organization would have hunted her and her friends to the
ends of the earth. If the unknown person appearing at the door had
been Lucy, wouldn't Nana have reacted ? Diclonii can sense
each other's presence.

The only symbolic things I can find in the music box stopping is that
Lucy's (and Nyu's) part is over. And the symbolism in the clock
ticking is that she and Nyu will not be forgotten.

I'm going to watch the last episode (13) again now.
It's still a beautiful sad story. I have to admit that it
wasn't so much at the events, but at the music & animation
at the opening credits that had me tearing up.

Anime-wise, the ending of Chrono Crusade. As far as Rosette's story went, you knew it was coming from the very beginning, but ye gods I cried buckets anyway...it's always gratifying, as far as I'm concerned, to see people dropping their stoic nobility at the last and having them admit that they're shit scared and don't *want* to accept their fate. And then you had the bigger-picture ending, with Joshua and Remmington's resolutions...and what had been accomplished, really? Bugger all. Very bleak but wonderful.

Movie-wise, the final scene of Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me. Moving and disturbing and perfect.

Music-wise I could be here all day, but right now I'll say Nine Inch Nails - Leaving Hope. *There's* a tune to get pensive and melancholy to.

Anime: Gunslinger Girl. Fuck, the last episode is one of the most damn depressing things ever. The scene of all the girls singing along to Beethoven's Ninth while Angelica lies dying the hospital is tragic.

Movies: Revenge of the Sith. Obi-Wan's last words to Anakin, after their duel:

You were the Chosen One! It was said you'd destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness.
I loved you, Anakin. You were my brother.

Goddamn. And then the shot of him leaving Luke with the Lars and riding into the binary sunset. Goddamn.

The only film I've ever seen that genuinely affected me emotionally was Grave of the Fireflies. I've never been saddened by a song, but "Just A Car Crash Away" by Marilyn Manson almost gets me there.

One song that I just thought of that never fails to make me cry is Harlem Rain by Richie Sambora. That has some of the most gorgeous acoustic guitar playing in it, but damn - that music with those lyrics are really powerful. I'd recommend everyone either download the song or pick up the excellent album it's from (Undiscovered Soul, which is superb on its own).

Another one that I just remembered last night is the album called The Dark Saga by Iced Earth. It's the only thing any metal band's ever done that can make me cry. It's a concept album based on the Spawn comic book, and they totally nail the Greek-tragedy of that story and character. The last song (A Queston of Heaven) is perhaps the most emotional metal song ever written. Yeah it's over the top and operatic and the whole 9 yards, but for those who know the story, it's extremely powerful. The "I know you can't forgive me part" is just... :cry:

there are parts in Texhnolyze that can only be described as blunt and depressing. just the whole ambience/color scheme; nothing really cheerful. not a bad show for what it was worth, though.

I just beat Crisis Core last week. Somewhere along the lines of playing I forgot that Zack died, and than he died in such an epic way... the emotional level was at least on par with the deaths of Jesus and Kamina.

As far as bleak endings go, Chrono Crusade's is right up there with Evangelion's, perhaps even more so.

I find most things pretty funny/'straight face' attitude, except for maybe, one I actually felt sad was the ending of Tristan und Isolde (Wagner)... quite moving really.

Series: That 2-part episode of 8 Simple Rules for Dating my Teenage Daughter after John Ritter's death.
Several scenes in Eva and Sailormoon. Also, a scene or two in Excel Saga of all things.

Videogame: Aries' death in FF7.

Movies: A.I. Artificial Intelligence. I nearly want to kill Spielberg for making an ending that's not just SAD, but leaves you feeling completely HOPELESS and EMPTY too. (Although reading up on Leaky that Kubrick had a hand in it makes me feel somewhat better.)

Forest Gump. Jenny's death is the scene that gets to me.

End of Evangelion: Several scenes.

Music: Komm Susser Tod, and some other things depending on my mood.
