They have repeatedly stated that they are going to cast the child characters to be age appropriate. So if the children are supposed to be 14, the actors will be 14. However, for all we know, they might not make good on that, by casting older actors, or simply changing the ages of the pilots altogether.

We all know how well hollywood pulls that sort of stuff off *Cough*Ian Ziering*Cough*

they need to be 14-15, its just really fundamental to the overall plot. Eva is about the characters, and Rei,Shinji and Asuka absolutely cannot be over 16. 16 year olds can drive ect., and for the most part are sexually active. The pilots in the series are 1) trapped 2) NOT SEXUALLY ACTIVE. They are however, very close, but still in transition. Them being at a transition age is absolutley crucial.

The age for Shinji's actor is the most important to nail, because boys start hitting the rockiest part of puberty around age 13. If they go for an actor older than like 15, then he's going to seem way too adult-like for the character. With Asuka and Rei on the other hand, they can get away with casting slightly older teenagers since there won't be too many unexpected changes (like voice changes) to be on guard for. The actress for Asuka could probably be about 15-16, and if the actress for Rei is an Asian (who are typically on the short side), then they could get away with casting an actress as old as 18.
However, I think it's pretty much inevitable that the second Evangelion movie will take place a year or so after the first one, since there's probably going to be 2-3 years between the releases (for the first two at least-- #3 might be shot back-to-back with #2). The actor for Shinji is going to have shot up a lot in hight and have a much deeper voice, so no-one is going to believe he's still a 14 year old. That could actually play pretty well into the story though, because it would make it more visually apparent that Shinji is having to adapt to piloting and his physical changes at the same time.
So basically, actor for Shinji = 14-15, actress for Asuka =15-16, and actress for Rei = 16-18 (if she's Asian).

Evangelion isn't going to be an all Asian cast, so people should let go of that idea right now. Rei will probably be Asian and Shinji might be half asian, but you can count pretty firmly on characters like Gendo, Fuyutsuki, Ritsuko, and probably Misato being white-washed (that's okay though since there are plenty of good actors who can fill those roles). Asuka is already white so she'd hardly be a hurtle. But you have to remember, most of the audience for this movie will be in the west, and since it's not an oscar bait art house film, I doubt that they'd go for an all asian cast.
They should go for whatever actors capture the visual and emotional presence of the characters, be they caucasian or asian.

I believe in the director of Eva 1.11.

True true. His explaination is that, "we have 3 A-list Directors in the pipeline that we are waiting to become available when they finish their current projects."
Take that how ever you like, that is the story he is sticking with that last I heard.
