I took a chance on a random anime vhs tape I saw at Suncoast waaay back in 1997. I was 13 years old. The tape was 24.99 for the dub and 29.99 for the dub and it contained two episodes. At the time, I only watched dub, which is why I still sometimes watch the dubbed version of the series. I appreciate it because it was how I was introduced to the show. I remember thinking it was cool because the actual VHS was white. Then I took it home, popped in the tape, and listened to Cruel Angel's Thesis for the first time.

I remember thinking "This song sounds so Japanese." I know... DUH! But, while I've heard Japanese songs from other anime I'd watched at the time, this one just felt so distinctly Japanese. That really set the tone for something that would subvert all notions I had of animated tv shows. It had an intro and a song, like so many cartoons I'd watched in my youth, but it was also so unlike anything I'd ever watched before. The intro itself, too, was just so densely packed with provocative imagery. It gave me hints as to what the show would be and everything I saw worked to intrigue me. I was hooked before the very first frame.

Looking back, i feel like 13 was perfect age for me to discover this show. I just plain GOT IT. The set up, how Shinji was the "chosen one" like I had read in so many books, seen in so many movies and tv shows, was completely familiar to me, which made me appreciate the subversion of Shinji rejecting it so heartily it. I personally connected with him when he cried and broke down as all the adults around him tried to pressure and manipulate him into doing what they wanted him to do. By the time Rei came onscreen, accompanied by that perfect music cue, I was completely absorbed. She was a mystery, a thread that had to be resolved.

After I watched both episodes, I had to have more. I worked part time for my mother, making about sixty dollars a week, which got me about two tapes every week. Man, i just devoured each episode. When I came home with each tape, it was an event. I got my friends into it and I'd rewatch those episodes with them. I probably watched each episode about 10 times by the time I had the money for the next two tapes. I think I caught up with the release of the tapes at around volume 10, which means after volume 10, i had to wait I think 2 months for the next tape.

I remember the wait was horrible but, in the end, it was for the best. In that time, i discovered chatrooms (#Gamefan being my biggest go-to) and met other Evangelion fans and we'd really dig into the show. Theories, speculation, debates... I can still remember staying up to 2, 3 in the morning just talking about Eva with complete strangers. Some people had already seen the episodes when they aired in Japan and would tease us about the upcoming episodes. I also remember being told there was a movie that ended the series and I had assumed they would be released along with the others tapes. How wrong I was.

Tapes 11-13 arguably had the best episodes in the entire series. I remember being so moved by episodes 25 and 26 while my friends all hated them. I assured them there was a movie coming to wrap everything up. So I waited and waited and... nothing. End of Evangelion wouldn't be released in North America until about 5 years later if I remember correctly. Fortunately, i didn't wait that long. Sometime in 1998, i made my first ever online purchase. I ordered Death/Rebirth and End of Evangelion from some bootlegger, along with English subtitles. It was jarring watching the movie with the original voices, so it made the movie very alienating. I actually didn't particularly like it the first time I saw it, to tell the truth. But I watched it again many, many times. It was on my mind a lot. I wanted to make sense of it. I watched it with friends who were equally confused and angry with it. I think because I was often put in the defensive position to try and explain what we had just watched, I eventually came around on it. In explaining it, I began to understand what they were trying to accomplish and how it fit in with the amazing anime series I had watched. Eventually, it just clicked.

I've lost count how many times I've watched the series all the way through. Between personal viewings and introducing it to friends, I've got to be somewhere in the 50s. I've watched it twice recently, with the release of the new Blu ray set and I can't believe how beautiful the picture looks. I feel like I've been giving glasses for the first time in my life. End of Evangelion especially, which I can still the bootleg VHS version of in my head, is just such a revelation. I recently downloaded the HD version of the series with the English dub, so I'm looking forward to revisiting those old ADV films voice actors (and yes, even that godawful Manga voice track will get a spin)

For the record, I'm similarly head over heels in love with the Rebuild movies, especially 3.33.

That's a fascinating story, as I discovered Eva 10 years later, when it was released as Platinum Edition. I especially relate to the arduous waiting for the last volumes. I caught up with Vol. 4, so I had to wait 2 months for each volume. Back then I didn't know about fansubs and stuff, so watching every disc was a small celebration.

The reason I watched Evangelion was actually a spoiler. I was already into anime somewhat back then and I wanted to check out something a bit weirder, since weird is a general term that describes the stuff I like well. So I went on tvtropes and checked out the trope - "Mind Screw". In general it did mention it was unusual or even saying it's one of the weirder anime but then it wasn't really descriptive as to why. So I went ahead and unrevealed the spoiler and what I got was:
It involves a giant robot being transformed into the tree of life by a set of nine other giant robots crucifying themselves and a huge tuning fork, then getting plunged into the vagina-forehead of a giant alien who has taken on the form of the male lead's mother's clone. This is to save the world. Probably.

It just seemed so odd to me, the compination of sci-fi, sexual and religious elements, I had to watch it. I did and I loved it.

Well, a few years ago, a buddy of mine recommended Evangelion because of my love of Gundam Wing (which explains my profile picture).

But what actually got me to search it out was this image I saved from tumblr way back in 2012, which I found while paroosing my computer one very boring afternoon: (thank god for bordom) Image
After using the almighty Google to find "hot redheads who pilot mechs" I found Asuka Langley Soryu and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I watched the first episode, and was intrigued, and by episode six, I was a very happy, very hooked person on a wonderful new show. By Epsiode 26, I was thoroughly confused, and by the End of Evangelion, I was enthralled.

Since then I've probably watched the series 20 times through, and the Rebuild series probably 10 times ( icant exactly say though, becasue that implies its actually finished), The only part I've only seen once was that scene in EoE that everyone categorically hates. I've also read the NGE and Raising Project manga (both excellent in their own ways). Then I got into reading fanfiction about NGE because I couldn't get enough (and waiting for Anno to make the final movie is killing me slowly)

And my fandom has now peaked, as I am currently writing a fanfic that goes into the origins of the adult characters, and is a rewrite of the entire series. It is entitled Neon Genesis Eveanglion: Legacy, a work of which I am immensely proud of.

First post!

I got into the series like many people have mentioned before, through the original ADV VHS tapes back in 1997. I started when the first three volumes were released, letting me watch the first six episodes all at once. This was suuuuper dangerous because the opening arc with Rei was just so engaging. Hauntingly so. Anyhow, I had my local comic books store, where I discovered Anime and Manga in general, give me a call when each VHS was released and I watched the series over the course of that summer. I didn't see Death and Rebirth or End of Evangelion until I was able to obtain a poorly copied VHS tape that I bought from suuuuuper questionable websites in the late 1990's. I managed to pick up that elusive Platinum set from a random Target for $20 and have rewatched the series every year in June since then.

From my very first watch through, I knew there was something different about this series. I was always introverted and I always looked too much into things, so this series offered me a veritable buffet of hidden messages, allusions, and metaphors to sink my teeth into. It has taken me just shy of 20 years, dozens of watch throughs, and a whole lot of reflection and reading, but I think that I might understand about 10% of the series.

I look froward to being a part of this community. Everyone seems super nice and there is so much insight into the series here!

mines a bit of a weird story because it was the first anime I brought back in 2000 but to be fair the first time I watched it, nothing really resituated and even when I watched EOE nothing really clicked yeah I had my favourite characters but that was about it and I just enjoyed watching, granted I was going through a very troubled time in my life as I'd just left a very abusive childhood home and started to live outside and I feel that I had really repressed my numbed my emotions though I did not realize that at the time and all I felt was a lot of anger and resentment over what had happened and was suffering from depression though it came and went in bouts. Some years ago I had therapy and got a lot of my inner issues out and around that time the rebuild was surfacing and after 3.33 came out which was really recently I re-watched the whole original series and EOE a second time and did it ever strike a cord everything I'd over looked suddenly made sense and I could relate really closely with a lot of the characters so to me this series is really special now and has become my favourite anime and I can now completely understand why it has the fanbase it has.

I have to say it’s very brave to admit this. It takes a lot of confidence to tell a story like that online, so you deserve some honest praise for that.
Rei SMILES  SPOILER: Show

The praise does deserve all three versions of Rei’s first smile.

It makes me rethink my earlier post, which is accurate, but lacking some info. The reason I got into the series is correct, a gif of Asuka fighting the MP EVAs. The reason I fell in love with Evangelion is because of how much I related to it. The moment I realized it was in Episode 4, when Ritsuko brings up the hedgehog's dilemma (the only words of hers I actually listen to), I almost fell out of my chair when I heard that because it described me so well. After that, I started to notice similarities between myself and Asuka, and myself and Shinji. I was bullied a lot all the way through high school, so I got used to shutting people out with my iPod, and wanting to be left alone. And when people tried talking to me, or to tease me I would lash out angrily at them to make them go away, I couldn't trust anyone. I had a lot of anger at the world back then, so it was easier to be alone. Watching the rebuild made the series even better for me, because of Mari. She reminded me of the side of myself, the fun quirky side, that I generally keep hidden, and only really show online, and that's part of the reason why she's my favorite character.
MARI  SPOILER: Show
ImageImage

The series (which I first saw a little over two years ago) has helped me a lot to deal with some stuff, and I wish I had seen this series back then when I was in high school, it would have saved me a lot of trouble and pain. But, I can't complain, because I finally found a series that has more meaning to me than simple entertainment or nostalgia. I also found a fandom that doesn't get butthurt at every little thing (Looking at you Star Trek and Star Wars). The characters are so relatable, and there must be more people that feel this way, which is why I decided to post this.

Hostile and unnecessary images removed. -Reichu

I blame my cousin.

It was about 2001-2003. My cousin showed me and my older brother, two AMV's of Evangelion, done to Rammstein - Du Hast and Europe - The Final Countdown. That was the first time I ever saw Evangelion, although it was done in a AMV format and I had no clue what was going on. In the following year, the same cousin got the VHS copies of Evangelion and we watched them together.

Other fandoms have come and gone, however Evangelion has stayed with me since. Not sure why.

The rest, is history.

I first heard the opening theme in Osu! and it sounded really cool, but nothing really happened after that. Some time later I watched some parody video which also had that song in it, which made me remember I had heard it before. That made me investigate where does it come from and saw it was from the Evangelion anime, which apparently also had good reviews. Read the wikipedia page and it looked interesting, so I decided to watch it.... oh boy, it was a fucking masterpiece. I had never seen anything like it before, provoking such thoughts and emotions.

It was showed in TV here around 2008 (Movie 2.22).
I was addicted to Asuka so i had to see the whole show. I bought all the DVDs when i wereXY on one of my Japan trips (easy to get them there for a good price).
Now Evangelion is a part of my daily life, cause Asuka wakes me up ever morning.
I named my daughter Asuka (thats why the nickname was chosen - sadly my wife not let me name her twinsis Rei), and she is tsun like the real Eva pilot.

I guess i love that series so much cause i am a fan of judgementday scenarios which is really the best in EoE.

Nice to be here with all of you :)Greetz from Germany

Must have been when I was younger an Toonami showed a heavily-censored version of the first two episodes for Giant Robot Week.
Came back later when I was older and watched the rest of the TV series. The whiplash with the televised finale bored me to tears, but EOE was a laugh-riot!

I have to say, your obsession with Asuka and your wife not letting you name your daughter Rei is kind of hilarious.

As for me, I think I saw part of episode 16 in 2003, but I was put off by the weirdness and the cussing because I was a grade schooler. For a long time I thought anime was bad and thought the show was weaboo fodder, but I gradually stopped being elitist and one day this year I heard a snippet of the OP and was interested. I watched it and everything about it blew me away.
This has been in the span of the last couple months. I watched the series (though I think it was the director's cut), watched EoE, watched NTE, read the manga, watched the Petit Eva ONA, read Campus Apocalypse, read most of The Shinji Ikari Raising Project (which has been pretty mediocre honestly, but I've almost read all of it) and now I post here sometimes.
Sadly, when I like something, I become obsessed with it, completely focusing my attention to it, and that in due time saps away my passion for it until I wake up one day and can't see it the way I did when it drew me in anymore. It's sad but I don't think there's anything I can do about it. Sadly I think that time is near for this franchise, but it nearly changed my life while it was here. I will always have appreciation for Anno showing us into himself, and I will always admire the aesthetics and Sadamoto's characters a lot.

I had several anime that had been suggested to me by friends or that I had heard about on the internet. I believe I heard about Evangelion from the book Ready Player One where the show is briefly mentioned in 1 sentence. I still looked it up because it sounded cool, and it wasn't like I had anything better to do. I hadn't really seen any anime before this (other than Yu-Gi-Oh, but I'm pretty sure I didn't even know what an Anime was when I watched that), so I looked at all the Anime that I had open in different tabs on my iPad and decided to watch Evangelion, because it had giant robots, and giant robots are cool. I watched the whole thing in a day (which really says something since I usually have an attention span of around 2-5 episodes depending on the series) and I've loved it ever since.

I saw NGE air on Adult Swim first when I was 12 years old, I saw maybe 5 of the episodes, including the first two. I thought it looked pretty awesome, but never remembered the name. When I turned 14 and moved to where I had lived when I was a lot younger, the internet was finally getting good enough that DSL was actually available where I lived, and my online friend whom I played games with and talked to on Steam reintroduced it to me. I watched it from one of the few obscure streaming websites that existed then, because it was the first year YouTube was made or just before it. This all happened in 2005, I'm pretty sure, so that means YouTube had just been made (it came out Feb. 2005). I wound up loving it and gave it several watch-throughs. I related to Shinji a lot, especially being 14 myself. I was already on the way to becoming socially isolated and a bit depressed, but when I was about 6 months from turning 16, I got hit in the head with a discus at a track meet and got a moderate concussion. After about six months post-concussion, I become ridiculously depressed and antisocial, very angry and filled with hatred of literally everything, but myself most of all. I began watching NGE several times over because of how everything related to me.

After about two years, I wound up coming out of the deep depression (one where I hated everyone to the point I wanted to kill people and myself so much I believed I deserved to suffer and refused to even consider suicide, questioned everyone I knew's relationship with me... thinking they all pretended to like me for the things I did for them, and having to deal with an absurd level of aggression and rage because I was a teenage male who was quite large from lifting weights and so had enough testosterone to get violent from roid rage, essentially), but I was still terribly socially awkward and isolated. I made two close friends at that point, but it wasn't long before life required I do other things where I don't live near any of them. I was in college for a semester, then wound up going in the military. Up until I was about a year in, I hadn't really watched anything Eva related other than the Rebuilds. After that first year in the military though, I got more into anime as a whole, and I got engrossed in the differences between Rebuild and NGETV, because I didn't watch 3.33 until about six months after it came out (which coincidentally six months after I got in), so I was oblivious to the massive changes on a whole. Since then, I've rewatched all the Rebuilds several times over, and had even more watch-throughs of NGETV. I never was into theorizing that much before, but have since become quite fond of it. I don't have much better ways to spend my time really, I do some 2D and 3D art here and there, watch anime from time to time, and try to rack my brain over NGE stuff, lol.

The first time i ever met Evangelion it's probably happend in 2013. In a day i just watching amv videos on youtube, and i found an eva amv and i like it. And one of the recommended videos of this amv is the End of Evangelion full movie in English dub. I click this and i watch the full movie, and this movie has had a big emotional impact for me.

(Sorry for my English i'm hungarian)

Many people were talking about this anime and how it is the best and all. Initially I was skeptical, but after watching the anime, I was blown away.
It was a long, long, roundabout path...

I've been sleeping on Eva for a long time. I always knew that it was an all-time classic anime, and found some of the characters really appealing, especially Asuka.

At the end of last summer, I bought the manga for my Kindle and started reading it, but that wasn't what got me into the franchise. About a month later, I started watching Gurren Lagann - basically the anti-NGE - and really enjoyed it, so figured I'd start watching NGE itself as a sort of counterpoint.

But I'm also really into cosplay, so when my friend offered to lend me her Asuka school uniform dress for an upcoming con, my fandom of the show skyrocketed and it became my all-time favorite, even more than TTGL ever was, which only got stronger as I finished the series and EoE (I'm planning to rewatch the whole thing with the Director's Cuts).

I saw the anime on several lists of popular, sort-of dark-themed shows and initially, I found Shinji and Kaworu really cute. I just followed those two characters, ended up knowing who dies accidentally and decided to finally give it a shot last year.

It was fun celebrating Third Impact instead of New Year for a change :D

Neon Genesis Evangelion is just a very popular anime series that I keep seeing discussed

I was exposed to it a lot in my past be it the cory in the house memes or cringe channel post where some weeb asked Asuka on a date and she said she has a boyfriend and he started crying

I watched 5 episodes of it and found it boring. Dropped it

Continued it 2 months later and gave it a 9

Then watched EOE and called the movie the greatest Anime shit I ever watched (I'm a casual newbie anime fan)

Then I watched analysis videos and I kept rewatching Asuka losing her mind and I proclaimed it the greatest anime series mankind has produced.

Eva is also the only anime that I bought. I bought Rebuild 2.0 on DVD
