Rebuild comes out in Japan starting summer of 2007, but how will fans in the West see it? Will we all have to wait until it's licensed/fansubbed?

I'd love it if it were shown subtitled in limited American theaters in Japanese areas (a la the original Godzilla, and not the edited-for-America version), but I doubt that'll happen. The second best thing that I could think of doing (though it's also quite unlikely) is to find a translated script, and I'd try to fly to Japan and read the script along with the movie in theater... unlikely not only because of getting a translated script, but because I don't know Japanese and would have no idea what the frak I'm supposed to do once I arrive.

So, I'm assuming the actual summer 2007 release is not how I or most other people in my area will see it. The question is, then, how? :?

I'm actually contemplating watching it in Japan. Depending on if I'll be able to get tickets to the Fuji F1 race, I'll probably be out there at the end of next summer.

I'm not sure how it works to show a foriegn movie in the theatres, doesn't there need to be a U.S. distributor? By the time it does get over here (took "Hero" over a year), there will probably be a DVD release in Japan. May have to rely on fansubs.

Does it make me an asshole that I'll just wait until a fansub torrent is available then download it?

Yeah, odds are that there will be a fansub release followed by an ADV DVD release a year later.

ADV has played with doing theatrical releases before for unremarkable fillms like the live-action Princess Blade, so it's possible they might try it again (even though that release was during the anime expansion bubble that popped a while back). However, I see a zero probability of simultaneous release, mainly because ADV would feel compelled to dub the thing first.

Rights-wise, I'm almost hoping a group like Geneon (Pioneer) (did a decent job on Sailor Moon S and SuperS (unlike ADV with season 1 & R!), so they're okay in my book) or rightstuf (seem to be a company that's for fans, by fans) gets it, but it'll probably be ADV (as long as it's not Mangle, okay! )
I'd just gonna wait until it's uploaded via bittorrent then watch it that way. Fansubbed or raw, I don't care. I WANNA WATCH SOME NEW EVA!

ADV said that they didn't get the Eva movies because GAINAX was asking for a very large amount of money for the license that ADV wasn't willing to pay, but Manga was. So, Manga got the license. Now, for this release, I wouldn't be surprised if GAINAX asks for even more money. Because, hey, SOMEBODY'S going to buy it.

I'll download the raw off bittorrent when it comes up, which will proabably be within two days of it's release. Then the fansubs when they come out. That might sound pointless to some, but I still got the gist of the Hellsing OVA episode one before the fansubs came out. It's not too hard to piece together what is going on if the voice actors are good.

Knowing even some nihongo helps, too.

I think it would be really cool if the movies would be released in theaters, subbed and hell even dubbed like what happened with that Ghost in the Shell 2 movie.

I'm guessing that it will come out on DVD to America shortly after it does in Japan. I doubt we will get an actual theatrical release.

But aahh... since it's being released theatrically, won't the only fansub available be a shaky camcorded video of the movie screen?

Depends. Sometimes there are very good pirated sources, direct transfers from screener DVDs or the 35mm itself. Given that it's Evangelion, that seems likely.

It would make sense, it happens with music a lot, I've seen albums by not-so-popular groups leaked one month or so before their actual release, so it's very likely to happen with something as freakishly popular as Evangelion.

Glad I know some Japanese, just in case the early fansubs (you know more than one group is gonna do it; screw efficiency) suck ass.
