Remind me what this is based on. It's very standard in that industry for translations, scripts, and dub work to go through some sort of approval. Not to mention communications between the two, because the ADR team is always certain to have questions.

I mean, at that time Anno wasn't particularly "active" maybe he plainly didn't care.

That seems like conjecture. Sure, he had creative differences with the mangaka of Kare Kano, but the timing of his production of Love & Pop doesn't support the idea that he quit, left, or didn't care about the anime industry. During that time, he did make some small contributions to the productions of FLCL, Abenobashi, and Mahormatic, via small voice roles as well as storyboard animation. And, most important, is that he was still on Gainax's board of directors right on up until he formed khara in 2006.

Honestly, I'm just curious and wondering if I'll have to calm my frustration when/if they brand the series A NETFLIX ORIGINAL.
Over half of the "Netflix Originals" on their service were financed, shot and originally released without their involvement. But, normally when they buy up exclusive rights to a series if they can get away with it they just brand it a Netflix Original. They could have used the term "Netflix Exclusive" as was apparently considered at one point but they with the business-savvy "Netflix Original" because the moniker intentionally lies/sells the idea that they made it.

A Netflix Original: Neon Genesis Evangelion. Written & directed by Netflix.

People will probably make the connection though that it is a 90s Japanese anime, doesn't seem netflixy.
Would be weird seeing it with that branding though.

If they're going to go with the original english actors solely to land nostalgia points with dub fans, they might as well not even bother with a redub and just rerelease the original english dubs, especially if they may miss their deadline by trying to get the original cast. I don't think they'll miss their deadline. If they have considered the original cast, it's happening within the original time frame or it's not happening. They have very little to gain by holding out, and I think they have everything to gain by recasting and delivering as soon as possible. The original dub of D&R/EoE on the other hand had everything to lose by not getting the original cast, because they were continuing from the original series and there was a necessity to maintain consistency with that. Netflix has a chance to start from scratch because they've got the whole package.

I'm basing this observation on amount of revisions taken after the initial US release of the media. ADV had to redub stuff once after getting it wrong in their initial release ("brain damage" was changed to "brain contamination" in Episode 2, for example), Funimation had to redub once as well for Eva Q, as well as reformat 1.11 discs to expunge unlicensed special features from future disc printings. Two of the largest and most popular anime dubbing companies of their respective times had to redo it and reissue the property at least once.

How many times did Manga Entertainment have to reissue their release to resolve all of the complaints we have about it?

Zero times. One and done, baby. They released it once, then Gainax never told them they had to fix anything ever again.

On the current GKids US Blu-ray/DVD release of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, there's a recorded discussion between Hideaki Anno and Toshio Suzuki. During that discussion, Suzuki reflects that Anno seemed to have "taken a break" from animation after Evangelion. (Neither Suzuki nor Anno seem to even recall Kare Kano in this conversation.) Anno replied something to the effect of "I was disappointed with the animation industry as a whole," so he "pursued live-action filmmaking." It's a fascinating listen. The fact that neither the lead producer at Ghibli nor a member of the board of directors of Gainax even acknowledge the existence of the Kare Kano anime is telling to me about how little Anno seemed to actually be involved with it at some point during its production. They both just seem to skip that show and go "Yeah, that whole live-action thing happened shortly after Eva, didn't it?"

To me, this might also explain the sheer amount of repurposed animations in Kare Kano. The characters moving like Evangelion characters (or even like the Eva Units themselves, occasionally) seems to be less of an homage to Anno's other work in this context, and more of a shortcut to a finished product. Sure, Anno was still on the board of directors until be built his own studio in 2006, but Gainax was never a finely-tuned and efficient business to begin with anyway. God only knows what being on the board of directors actually meant for that company.

IIRC, the contract Netflix has with Khara is in no way legally exclusive. (Funimation can still buy the release rights for NGE in the US specifically, for example, and not step on anyone's toes.) So this might eliminate a "Netflix Original" treatment of the property. (I hope.)

According to Matt Greenfield, I believe on one of the Platinum audio commentaries, that was literally the only thing Gainax asked them to fix when ADV released Renewal as the Platinum Edition. Otherwise, yeah, I'm sure Gainax had a number of corrections and suggestions for them, which is totally normal in any sort of creative production.

This is a misunderstanding that I'm still disappointed to see. Studio khara didn't make Funimation do anything. Funimation went to khara for help after they had a dub approved and put into theaters.

I've either forgotten or I don't think I ever heard about this. Is there an ANN article or something about this somewhere?

I think it's worth pointing out that we have limited knowledge of the English language production process. Just because we don't know much of Gainax's oversight during EoE doesn't mean it wasn't there. Not to mention, ADV released the English version mere months after the Japanese release, and in some cases before the Japanese release. Meanwhile, it took 3-5 years for Manga's releases to come out, depending on how you look at it. I imagine they really took their time with it. There were a number of delays with that, and I don't think it was all because of trying to track down certain English voice actors.

Admittedly, I am being somewhat facetious about these claims. I just find it somewhat humorous is all.

That was mostly swept under the rug, as it were, as companies don’t like publishing licensing issues. But it was discovered by our very own forum members in a thread back in 2011.

Huh. What made them decide to redub it, then?

Wait, there were episodes of NGE that were released in America before Japan?

I recall some criticism of the quality at the time. Unfortunately, you had to actually see it in theaters and remember it well. I didn't, so I can't compare them. It was apparently adequate, but they weren't happy with it.

Yes, the last two tapes, so we got a release of episodes 23-26 in English ahead of the Japanese release. But, keep in mind, the initial Japanese release of 21-24 was the "director's cut" that we didn't get until years later.

There should be some news at the end of the month about the home video market according to the italian publisher, but it's still a very complicated situation.

Source is the video in this article: https://www.animeclick.it/news/79867-ca ... enza-dynit

May I ask where you have this information from? The whole 3.33 USBD mega delay situation is shrouded in mystery, so I'm curious.

Wait, I thought the "OA" versions were the versions that originally aired, and they were supplanted by the director's cut later on.

I think he means home release. He seems to be saying that the OA was aired, but the video release was DC (not that I was aware of that either). Actually, the information is right there in the wiki, though (where "NPC" appears to mean "DC")

I suppose I need to go through the wiki and turn every "NPC" into a "DC", since that whole thing is the result of an old shame of mine...

Haven't been here in over 9 months. I heard about the English dub with Netflix not including some of the original members.

Amanda Winn Lee said something like: "We're in the same boat Spike"

Yet despite Spike saying he wouldn't keep his hopes up, that was over a month ago. What's the latest?

We have not been told if there will a new dub, or who might be in it. All information is guesswork, or conjecture based on the old people knowing they haven't been asked (for a hypothetical job). We know nothing. At all.

Netflix could always surprise but I wouldn't hold out hope for an April release.
These guys are pretty spot on when it comes to Netflix announcements and this seems like an almost complete list of their largest appeal April releases:
https://www.whats-on-netflix.com/coming-soon/april-2019-new-netflix-releases/

But, Netflix plays by their own rules (in so many shady ways) so they could always drop a surprise announcement at any moment.

Spring does last until June 21st so they've got a lot of time.

For Germany it was revealed today that Madoka Magica comes out April 1st. That's a short time frame. But that's a region specific release... Will probably be different with Eva.
I just hope it comes out soon.
