Right on. Wish I would have made this thread last week, but better late than never I guess....

Talk about a crazy few days in Russia; Ronaldo tying Spain, Iceland drawing Argentina, the world champs going down to Mexico. And I'm surprisingly okay with the USA not taking part. I guess I had quite a while to process it, and 'm just happy the World Cup is going on. It's always a treat.

I'm rooting for South Korea foremost, then Germany and Japan. It'd be nice to see England do well, too. I predict Portugal to win it all, though I'm not particularly fond of their team(CR7 Is fun to watch play though).

Who y'all got?
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

Please no, the cars honking all night would be insufferable. I had enough headaches last time we won. Let Japan win or something.

This is that once in every 4 years period where I lament having no television.
Been having to watch Match Highlights on the FIFA youtube channel instead.
Will be back in Britland next week to see England's final group match, I always look forward to 0-0 draws and seeing the ball played backwards whenever we get possession.

Been quite a few last-minute goals, a VAR moment or two, underdogs tieing and beating high-tiers; amusing stuff so far.
Congratulations to Iceland's goalie saving a Messi penalty shot. No sympathy for Peru's Cueva blasting his shot over the bar however.
Hit it between the posts. Is it really so hard?
No, I wouldn't fare any better doing it myself.

It would be very cool if an underdog were to win it all though... makes me wonder who the biggest underdog to ever win it was?

I feel the same way about this and when the US Open tennis tournament rolls around every August. I watched a ton of the WC in 2014, but this time around not so much.

They didn't fare so bad today, eh? And England also have the best ever song written about football, New Order's "World in Motion"

Anyway, seems like there's an unusual amount of PKs being awarded this year, or am I just imagining things?

I'd love to see a weird finale like... Switzerland : Iceland or something.
I'm not that big into football, but the World Cup tends to get me... I remember being in Germany in 2006 at the time - t'was pretty neat. Time sure flies, huh.
Generally I'm always rooting for Japan, as a proper weeb should. Sadly they never make it past the elimination round.

(this is one of the perks of having a shit national football team, you can root for whoever, lol)

Aaand they lost it to an African team. Kekekek.

While I (still) love Poland, I really hate the Poles sometimes, especially when it comes to sport events, which are often treated here as festivals of National Pride (TM) and then inevitably change into festivals of National Complex (TM). Yes, we've got a chance from the destiny and we've wasted it again, because we couldn't get our sh*t together; yet we still are great somehow and the next time we'll shove our greatness right into their throats, in the act of Teh Great Justice (TM), because we deserve it for our Historical Sufferings (TM). I hope you can get it, and why I disdain such attitude. (sigh)

The most funny part about the event was probably when one Polish coach told the press that shamans won't help them. He had to be genuinely surprised, when after the match some Senegalese player bowed down to Allah and then smiled wide, in the way only the Africans can smile.

You'd think that football fans would hesitate to support a sport where the players make more money than the average people could even dream of, but no.

Do they also vandalize monuments after victories over there? Nothing shows the fans patriotism more than drunken vandalism.

Ah, no: the monuments (especially the monuments of National Heroes and Their Victories) are kinda revered here. Sadly, buildings walls are not. The football fans, especially the younger ones, find tagging their districts with club names and abusive slogans as their mission from the above or something.

And the only justification for the players' earnings I can think of is gathering such fans and making them feel they aren't completely useless in this world. This is a mad place, the world.

(Articles are hell. Who invented them, for sake of The Spirits?)

That's good. One time in Évora they vandalized the First World War memorial, nearly drove me insane. That said, I don't think the average person is even aware it's a memorial, despite the big bronze letters saying so.

I live in the US but my family is from Italy and I've always rooted for the Azzurri. I was in Italy when they won in 2006 and it's been sad watching the national team decline since then. Hopefully this snub will be the wake-up call they need to improve.

I guess at this point I'll just be a good weeb and root for Japan.

With Germany repeating history and getting bounced in the group stage, I'm throwing in for France and Mexico (since they're CONCACAF), and it would be nice to upset Brazil.

The French have a pretty good chance of winning it, I think. Can't believe Germany got knocked out; I started watching soccer in 2006 and every world cup I've watched they've been in the semis... and Spain going out to Russia was wild.

Sigh, the three teams I was rooting for are gone(poor Japan! That had to be horrible for their fans.) and my pick to win it is out. Guess I got England and Croatia going foward.

Japan played very well until the last 30 seconds, then they played in the most idiotic way possible. I imagine a lot of football fans were like Shinji in EoE after the 3-2 goal.
