Evangelion Re-Release

I am huge fan of Evangelion but as of now there isn't a legal way to watch the series outside of Japan. I know the distribution rights are extremely expensive though. :emogendo: So I had an idea to spread the word to different well known people that happen to be fans of the series. I will give a starting list of people that are fans of the series. I think if we can contact as many people as possible there will be a bigger demand for Evangelion.

Phil Witmer- Journalist at VICE NEWS

Wes Anderson- Film maker ( He sites Evangelion + The End as being one of his favorite works of animation.)

Keith Uhlich- Film critic for Indie Wire, Hollywood Reporter, and Time Out

Rebecca Sugar- Creator of Steven Universe

Spike Spencer- English Voice Actor and writer for USA today of all things

[Now for companies]

Funimation
Criterion Collection ( Idk Eva is kinda experimental at times so it would be kinda cool for them to release it)
Sentai Productions
Literally anyone

I've started a full-on petition on Change.org

https://www.change.org/p/studio-khara-r ... m=copyLink

Spread this like wildfire!
I've reached a point where I just generally don't give a fuck anymore. In a good way.

So here's the thing, I don't want to be a huge buzzkill, but I'm inclined to agree with the belief that nothing has ever been accomplished by an internet petition. Best case scenario, if your goal is accomplished, it's not because of the petition. The petition is just one drop in a bucket, or a contribution to a ongoing fervor. Creating a fervor is hard to do for something as old as Evangelion is. And it's worth noting that this petition itself has a number of problems right off the bat. For one, there are at least three legal methods for watching NGE, 1) Importing, 2) Amazon.jp 3) secondhand media. They're less than ideal, but at least the first and third are reasonably do-able. Also, publicly naming specific people is a way of obligating them into supporting something. Some people see that as rude impolite and/or unprofessional. But that aside, here's what I would like to contribute to this, if you're serious about accomplishing something.

If you want to accomplish something, throw out this petition stuff, it doesn't accomplish anything. If anything, modernize it. No one cares about internet petitions anymore. It's the laziest way of feeling like you've done something. If anything, start a hashtag, or schedule a #EvaOnBluRay day, where people tweet or post, or share something so you can see a trending topic. People need to take part in a trend or movement to show in a tangible, real way, that people want this thing to exist, moreso than ticking a fucking box on a petition. You need to get people to show that they care. Saying "I want X" is well and all, but what are you actually going to take the time and effort to do? Anyone can change their avatar to a certain color or whatever as a show of solidarity, but what are you going to actually do to get out there and make that thing actually happen?

Alternatively, you can do one of two things.

1) Try and find some filthy rich celebrity that has millions of dollars to burn. Like, is Floyd Mayweather a tremendous Evangelion nerd? Tell someone like him to purchase the rights on Funimation's behalf. That sounds like a longshot, but if the cost of the license is really too much for Funimation's pockets, find someone with humongous pockets who really gives a shit about Evangelion... and has money to burn. Hey, it could happen...

2) Start small, with a particular objective in mind. We know for a fact that Funimation knows people want NGE, they want NGE, they've inquired about it, but they can't afford it, and what I'm getting to, is that if I'm not mistaken, is that the license for Evangelion is not currently on offer. Try finding the correct, appropriate channel to contact King Records/Starchild, like a business inquiries email. Preferably have a well formatted, well proofed (most likely in fluent, formal Japanese) letter of inquiry sent to King Records inquiring about whether they are accepting offers for the license, and then try to get a definitive answer as to whether or not it boils down to money. If money isn't an issue, and King Records doesn't want to license it currently, well then your petition is absolutely pointless. There's absolutely no point in expending a ton of people's energy when a company like Funimation or Criterion's hands are completely tied on the matter. You've got to think a bit more like a business and start investigating this in a more structured way. King Records probably won't give you a monetary figure, because you're not a formal entity, but you've got to establish some facts before you try to accomplish something, because your methods have to align with the reality of the situation.

Hopefully this gives you some things to think about. Sorry to say, but I've been researching this for months to adequately address this topic. It's way more complicated than just showing interest. You're talking about an expensive product being released into an already flooded market which results in a very risky investment with likely little reward. Even if the license was on offer, and even if Funimation had the money for it, they probably still wouldn't pull the trigger, because the risk vs reward is probably too high, and the return on investment would probably be too low.

Actually thanks. This helps clear things more. That was the reason why I brought up different people that like Evangelion. The change.org wasn't my idea initially. But to be clear I still think a failing change.org "might" boost interest in the future. I want to know if we can find any more celebs and stuff like that. The Hashtag sounds like a great idea actually we just need famous people to back it up. On an unrelated note, Nintendo has mentioned the Mother series and a lot of that has to do with feedback from people outside of the fandom, like adult swim having a give us mother 3 bumper, but I digress. As of the Japanese Bluray I'd probably pass on that mainly because it doesn't have subtitles and is also overpriced. I would love to get some help here, on spreading the word. If you could contact some Journalist like I said earlier. That would be great. Any way to get the word through many people would be great.

1. As many have done, you can buy it, rip it, and parse in your own subs. If I had the money, I would have myself.

2. Overpriced? Dude, if you want this to happen, you need to prepare yourself for the reality that it's going to be comparable to offset the costs, and to reduce reverse importation. That is much more of a concern now that Japan is in the same region code as the entire western hemisphere (minus greenland, but who cares).

I dont think that is really the problem for me. It really is that this isn't very accessible other people that are now getting to the series. :uhh:
I have tried converting some of my other blurays. Yes I use Hand Brake. Its a pain to use on my computer, because of it being very slow and without a lot of memory.

I'd rather say we tried, then giving up

I heard that Gunsmith Kickstarter was successful, I am going to email a couple different Anime Licensors if they want to start a kickstarter.

You know that those kickstarters have been started in accordance with the license providers to gauge the success rate the product could have in the market.
I mean, I applaud you for your efforts, but I think if a release of Evangelion was feasible in any way, it would have already happened.
I've asked the German publisher of the Evangelion movies, if they had interest in releasing the series. I think, they'd have the resources since they are only releasing the "big stuff" (Ghibli, some high quality shows). Also, Europe is in another Blu Ray region, so reverse importation might not be as big of an issue. They said the license is in lockdown right now, that's all they can say.

^ Well, the licence will probably be in lock down until Final has been released on DVD outside Japan. Once that happens, with renewed interest in the series, and people wanting to buy the show, maybe there will be a re-release. But until then, they won't do anything to disrupt the cycle of supply and demand.

Voted in college to be Most likely to Take Over the World, how to do that however, will require at least Four Evangelions. Thanks for the idea Misato-san!

You know I was just thinking about the final Rebuild Movie. I was talking to the director of Evangelion Q or 3.33 at anime matsuri in Houston. I asked him if he could ask the higher ups to bring the series to the west eventually. Lets just say I felt bad for asking that. I now agree that we should wait until the final rebuild movie is out before asking about any re-release of the series.

Hiroyasu Kobayashi was the guy. He also directed that video Me!Me!Me!. He said the usual, "Nothing to announce as of now". But atleast I got him to sign my adv dvd in spite.

Unless Hideaki Anno was secretly in Houston, you're probably referring to Hibiki Yoshizaki, who did design work on 3.0, and directed the music video for Sakura Nagashi. He's mainly known as the guy who did ME!ME!ME! for Animator Expo.

It should be noted that ADV released mutlilpe editions of the TV series in the middle of the previous decade. And while there may be not of the best visual quality, there is such a glut of them, it's not impossible to get a copy, so it might be best to wait.

Aside from the license cost, I believe this is one of the biggest factors holding back a re-release. Sure, it's only available used via sites like eBay, but I think it's relative affordability to its cost in the past is pretty good indication of how many there are on the market. And, in the meanwhile, lots of bootlegs have also been pumped into the market.

Well, not just bootlegs, but also videos haring sites and cloud services where you could directly download the series after someone's ripped it off the DVD or Blu-ray. With that kind of access, why buy anything at all?

To fund the creation of what you steal.

To be clear, I have bought several anime in languuages I don’t speak, because they are not available in English; I then feel justified in acquiring illegal copies I can actually understand.

Hey guys I just got a email replies from Funimation and Sentai. Funimation gave some bullshit reply on how they can't accept ideas for anime? Very strange. That said Sentai gave a more optimistic approach. I told them about the small company releasing a successful kickstarter for Gun smith Cats. And suggested that they do the same. Here is their reply.

"Thanks for contacting us. Anything is possible. I'll be sure to escalate your suggestion to the powers that be for future consideration. Feel free to fill out the enclosed link if you have any additional suggestions. We appreciate your support. Have a great day!"

Then they gave this link to share. To make sure that people are still interested idk.
