Watched 18. Sad to say I'm pretty dissapointed lately with the show. The scenes that were supposed to be tense didn't feel so, all relationships have been very simplified, to the point the characters don't feel human (Futoshi is like a gag now, Mitsuru is just a different character altogether) and it really bothers me how hardass Zero Two has become the waifu she was in fan art. Like, the roles of Hiro and Zero Two have reversed. She is definitely the more submissive one now. I still don't buy the relationship at all. Is it really based on this encounter they had as kids? I expected something more after episode 13, because that whole thing seems more like an excuse to have them be in a relationship than a genuine reason for it.
14 was the last good episode IMO.

Also the whole wedding stuff felt pretty forced and cheesy. Just didn't feel genuine but like fanservice or something.
Lol at the ring thing.

I'm looking forward to the lore episode though.
I've noticed the always have Otsuki (Trigger president, ex-Gainax member) write the scripts when more scifi stuff comes in.

And I think the show can still have a satisfying conclusion, so I hope it turns out that way.
Even if I don't like whatever they do next though, the first half was pretty cool. Lots of great action as well.

And I really hope we get news on Promare when it's over.

I'm inclined to agree. Although it gives some justification for their behaviour in 19, I feel they could have found something a bit better. The wedding fitted into my long-running complaint that the children keep on suddenly knowing too much about things they profess not to know (feelings, embarrassment, sex, babies, and then marriage).

OTOH, 19 gave lots of useful background, and made some things fall into place a bit better. I hope that the last few episodes build on this effectively.

Given that the writers have shown to be rather competent, I have fairly high expectations, but at the same time am confident that they will be able to live up to them

I agree with that complaint pwhodges.
It's pretty confusing. Not as much time is dedicated to that aspect as you'd think.

It was still the more interesting of the two weddings that could be watched last Saturday. Coincidence?

Episode 19... Oh dear, where do I start?

Perhaps by saying that I should have stuck to my original judgement after episode 2, and not kept indulging morbid curiosity after the recent surges of the crowd to do the "watch along" thing.
Perhaps with the observation that the willing suspension of disbelief does not mean hanging it by the neck until it is dead, dead, dead.
Because  SPOILER: Show
The future history compresses way too much into the next 20 years.

other bits  SPOILER: Show
It was like watching NGE 21 again, only with "we made Gendo too sympathetic a character, and too much of a player last time" (Frank could benefit by taking dating advice from any harem lead, well maybe not Natsuru, but you get the idea) and "where did Anno leave his notes about NGE being set ~125 years after Nadia? I want to bring Gargoyle back to lead the Committee this time."

Your first prototype mech lurches from its restraints to headbang against the chamber walls? And your wife dies in the activation experiment too? Really? How novel! Oh, I see, the twist is you get fixated on a monster girl instead. Are you sure your name's not actually Kurusu Kimihito, aka "Darling"?

Clearly significant omissions in the whole were the origins of 002, 016 and the 9s -- they could each be a creation of a separate faction.

There's also enough going on with a small pool of candidates that 002 could well be the Rei to 016's Shinji (klaxohime breeds a humanoid by splicing in some Franxx DNA, he breeds a son/surrogate using the klaxo-DNA specimen he obtained), which would be sufficiently hilarious that it could only happen in conjunction with a Gurren Lagann style ending.

And at the end of the episode, it's only the over-powered Lovemobile standing in the way of Papa freeing the parasites [hide]from the cages of their bodies[/hide].

Oh, right, like a certain Neon Genesis Evangelion did when it was first aired. A little flexibility in dates is a small thing to ask.

But yes - the Eva parallels were beyond blatant (and more damaging to the show's credibility than the supposed parallels in RahXephon, for example).

But in spite of its flaws, I'm still finding it an enjoyable romp - probably never to be watched again.

This will be forgotten sooner than Erased.

Let's just not talk about it how embarrassingly clumsy it is in trying to imitate both Utena and Evangelion.
I mean, if you don't have the chops to pull it off, poor implementation of visual ideas makes your incompetence even more apparent.
But as with every other medium, 95% Anime is of shit quality. So it's nice that the creators at least have ambition, but falling from a pedestal you've build poorly hurts more than not being able to fall because you already smeared yourself in excrements.

I don't even mind that this show hasn't been able to carve out an identity for itself. Everything is inspired by everything else after all. My problems are that it tries to sell me the status quo of the world as rebelling against progressive ideas, I guess? Given how many people watch the show, and just accept those themes without thinking too hard about it, just goes against my sensibilities as a part of a sexual minority. There, I said it. this shows staunchly conservative message hurts my feelings.

So we have a show written by semi-fascist assholes executed laughably amateurish in places.

Which begs the question. Why is it still so entertaining in places?
This is a fascinating question I am not able to answer, unfortunately.

I think that could be answered by the fact they have a large library at their disposal. As one example, they always had meals delivered to them, but during their one-month time of isolation, they learned how to bake bread, reading instructions from a book.

I thought there would be more jokes about that point the internet.

Fascist how?

There were some good things about the episode, but I also got the feeling that they didn't put a lot of thought in some places. I mean if I was a writer there, I would have done things differently, but I'm not, so I can't really complain.

Well, that only goes so far in learning to have feelings; reading is not a good way to acquire socialisation. Also, the mere fact of the apparently uncensored library is an anomaly when it seems that they are intended to be kept ignorant.

Fascist how?

I think his previous word "conservative" was better. The show pushes a conservative sexual agenda quite strongly. Leaving aside the absurdity, even in sci-fi terms, of the FranXX requiring a boy and a girl to operate (which we are shown can be subverted to some extent for plot convenience), there's the design of the cockpit - is that merely fan-service, or is there a degree of stereotype normalisation behind it? We are shown that attempting a same-sex pairing fails completely (= homosexuality is unnatural?). We are shown in general a stereotypical view of the male being in the upper position, but the female being the driving force - this is reversed in a glimpse of a pair in another squad, but the reversal is not allowed to happen in the open with the main protagonists.

Breaking the laws of physics is one thing; breaking arithmetic is something else. The timescales aren't anywhere near enough for the population explosion and childbirth disincentives mentioned, during the time that only the "rich" had the treatment, even if by "rich" you mean everyone with a First-World lifestyle.

I was joking; sci-fi in general relies on absurd timescales to make things even conceivably possible. In Eva the rebuilding of Tokyo 2 and 3 and the development of the Evas almost from scratch all in 14 years? No more realistic than the population timescale in FranXX.

Just a few thoughts on the last few episodes:

-I'm surprised they kept the same OP song, only a bit remixed. It's not all that common these days. Said song as grown on me, but I think they should have gotten a new one anyway.
-I don't know why, but I found the glorification of sex to be surprisingly effective.
-My initial thought that some of the main characters would die in the second half is getting increasingly unlikely. At this point, I'd be surprised if anyone besides the antagonists died. If there is any death, it'll only occur in the last episode.
-Like others here, I also found the time span used in the last episode ridiculous, although it's not something that ruined the episode for me.
-I wonder what Hideaki Anno would think of some of the more obvious references in Darling and what he would think of the show in general. Hell, I wonder what the director of Darling thinks of Evangelion, considering he worked on the Rebuild movies.

Has there been inconsistency as to which of Dr. Frank's hands is the artificial one in previous episodes? This is bad inconsistency in the same ep.

I disagree - in the first pic he appears to me to have his palm outward (towards us), meaning it's his right hand (but I haven't checked it in the video yet, in case that's clearer); in the second picture we see his left hand behind him.
