We were actually shown what Yui looks like earlier in #16 -- the montage of newspaper clips ended with a photograph of her and Shinji.

The LHA is really no more than a very generic representation of a woman. Note that Shinji doesn't recognize the LHA (long-haired apparition) as 'mother' until she embraces him, upon which we abruptly transition to a scene where Yui is represented more accurately (albeit without a face -- referring back to Shinji's conversation with Rei in #15). The simplest explanation, IMO, is that LHA is used to visually represent a mysterious presence that is at once feminine and "ethereal/spectoral" -- conveying certain information to the audience while acknowledging Shinji's ignorance of her identity. Once we know who and what we're dealing with, LHA is never seen again.

Oh gee, whatever is THAT a reference to?

I remember when first reading information awhile back about the orginally planned episodes I was really confused by this Arka business, and still am. ^^; So, was this when episodes 25 & 26 were thought of as being what we know now as EoE, or after this intial idea was scrapped, was GAINAX still thinking of doing that only they weren't able to due to budget(??)/protest(?) reasons? (Apparently some angry parents protested about the violent nature of some episodes and/or what Gainax had in mind for the finale, so it had to be changed... Or at least that's something I heard ages ago, probably just something some fan said or something on Wiki.)

I kinda hope we'll get that idea of celberating Shinji's birthday in Rebuild; that'd be cool. ^_^

I apolgize for my OT-ness, please resume.

These episode summaries are from a rather preliminary stage of NGE's development -- all the way back when "Neon Genesis Evangelion" was the "tentative title" and Anno-tachi had yet to convince anyone to put money down on the show's production. Ya'll need to keep in mind that, by the time production started and enough episodes had been completed in advance to fashion the OP, the conceptual framework of the show had changed considerably from what had been forwarded in the Proposal. Expecting that the Proposal's vague ending scenario would still be intact in the minds of the production team by that point is very unrealistic.

Oh gee, whatever is THAT a reference to?

Eh?

Please, oh please tell me you didn't miss that! She's sarcasticly saying Instrumentality. Anyways they had Human Instrumentality Project in the next episode summary.

Proposal wrote:Episode #23: "The Human Instrumentality Project"

The secrets of Eva and the Human Instrumentality Project unveiled, along with the truth behind Ritsuko and [Shinji's] father's goals.

Episode #24: Now, the Promised Time

Rei breaks down. Her secrets are revealed. Finally awakened, the 12 strongest Apostolos descend from the Moon. Both Eva Unit 06 and the American continent vanish completely. Humans acknowledge their helplessness in the face of the Apostolos' crushing power. The promised time, when people will return to nothing, approaches. A human drama in the depths of despair.

["Rei breaks down": "breaks down" can also be "collapses" or "be defeated". "Vanish": "evaporate" or "disappear without explanation".]

Episode #25: "Arka, the Promised Land"

The laboratory holds the ancient ruins of Arka, which have become key. In order to stop the 12 Apostolos, the United Nations' head members annul the Human Instrumentality Project and decide upon the Apostolos' destruction. [Shinji's] father objects. Shinji and the others stay at the laboratory for Rei. A drama of people conflicting over incongruous objectives.

Final Episode: "The Only Neat Thing to Do"

On the stage of the destroyed laboratory, all mysteries and drama are concluded. The denouement.

Remember at all times that the commonly distributed translations kind of, well... suck. (I'll get around to tackling episode #01 ~ #22... sometime.)

Incidentally, the "12 strongest Apostolos" were conceptually recycled into the 3-less-than-planned Mass Production Mob.

That sounds like an extremely shitty ending, yo

Out of a possible 12,000 layers of armor, the presence of a major league hairnet making up at least one of these in the helmet area never occured to any of you?

It took the purple people eater ten years to break through it all! Third Impact occured because she needed a perm.

I doubt you're being serious here, but in case you are, in ep. 2 her helmet came off. No indication of hair then. In ep. 20, we see her bandaged head with no helmet. No indication of hair then either.

The Evas are, by all indications, non-mammalian, so this hair business is really quite strange.

Perhaps they fit the bill of mammal-like reptiles?

Explain what you mean? (Not the "mammal-like reptiles" part; I know about thems.)

Save the weirdness of Yui In Spaaaaaaace!!!, there isn't a single indication that Evas possess hair. Incidentally, none of the Apostles opt to bother with it, either. And Lilith's head is "smooth like a peeled egg" (as a production drawing puts it). The only time we get hair, or some facsimile thereof, is when we have harpies, Armisael, or Lilith taking on Rei's form. (She's so popular, that Rei.)

I wasn't trying to explain the hair. Merly trying to give them a basic classification.

The so-called "mammal-like reptiles" (which isn't a natural and monophyletic grouping of animals or anything, but maybe you know that) represent a general phase of Terran evolution. It's somewhat misleading to attempt to apply it to the Evas, as "Adamic humans" seem to represent a 'deified' form of a humanity (Y HALO FAR) that evolved in a manner entirely unique from our own. Different path + ludicrously thorough convergent evolution = creepily similar results.

But in any case, they aren't by any means "mammal-like reptiles" -- they're neither reptile nor mammal. There really aren't any characteristically "reptilian" traits at all; and although Evas are very mammal-like, but don't quite have "what it takes". The best we can do, really, is "non-mammalian humanoid".

Yeah. The hair is fucked-up.

No no no. Needs a new genus. Then one species name for FAR, and one for the Adam off-shoot. (Since they won't be interbreeding.)

Hmm...

I don't see why everyone bothers with the "hair" so much.

It also doesn't look like physical hair at all, then again, Yui probably knows enough Voodoo to grow energy hair or something fucked up like that.

it really doesnt look like hair...i thought it was some kind of energy stream or fire eminating from her...

it hadnt occured to me that it could be hair until i heard Reichu say it somewere...

also...i would like to disagree on the statement that Rei has no Angel DNA in her...

Rei has blue hair and red eyes...

As we discuss here Unit 1 grows blue hair...(Evas fit in the same category as an angel do they not?)

Super Lilith has red eyes...big red eyes...

so there are two points where an Angel or its equivalent can grow...red eyes/ blue hair...

If Rei was a clone of Yui and ONLY Yui...how could she possibly not have brown hair and green eyes...and darker shade of skin fer that matter

also...how could Reigenerate her arm the way she does in EoE without some form of body Angelness....

i suppose Liliths soul can be an explanation

but what about the Reiquarium...those are all shells with no soul...if they all have blue eyes and red hair...

Image

i realise its tinted...but i think that if the hair was brown it would be a much darker shade...same with eyes if they were green...they are clearly red here...
