Changes in Eva Designs between Series and Movies (and your opinions on them!)

Being a rather visual person, one of the first things I key in on when watching any of the iterations of Evangelion is the overall designs of the various Eva units from that series/movie. In every media from NGE to EoE to 1.0 to 2.0 to 3.0 (and probably again in 3.0+1.0/4.0) the general proportions and designs of the Evas has changed either subtly or completely from iteration to iteration.

So... this thread/discussion is simply meant to call out the physical differences and changes (and similarities) between the various versions of the Eva units and to give people a chance to say which they may prefer over another.

With that, here's some analysis via images. I've tried to stick to official art as much as possible for the clearest comparisons and have included a few figure images in addition.

So lets start with
Neon Genesis Evangelion
SPOILER: Show
Image

These will serve as the "baseline" for comparing all other iterations of the mecha as these were the "originals". Items of note with the original designs are the exaggerated proportions between the waist and the shoulders (though it does vary slightly at certain points and from picture-to-picture). The image below shows further exaggeration of the waist-to-shoulder ratio despite also being art (promotional in nature?...) from NGE.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Below is a screencap of Unit 02 which seems to continue the same proportions seen in the first image into the anime itself, where they stay pretty consistent throughout the series.
SPOILER: Show

And as a figure example I offer up the Tamashi Spec XS-01R Evangelion Unit 01 figure. Admittedly, this figure does not convey nearly as exaggerated proportions as seen above, but that can be chocked up to the restrictions on action figure manufacturing and needing to ensure it has proper structure and posability at the *minor* cost of not being 100% accurate to the art for the series.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Next up
End of Evangelion

Unit 02 in EoE has the greatest screen time along with the MP Eva series.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Here we see that the exaggerated shoulder/waist ratio is practically eliminated, with the torso having been made thicker from the chest to the waist, getting rid of the previously skinny waistline and broad chest/shoulders.

The MP Eva series sticks to these same new proportions, though there are a couple shots in the film where they might look "skinnier" than normal, but that can be attributed to animation inconsistencies and the viewing angle of the particular shot.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Another small item of note is that in EoE, the Evas seems to lose the clear definition between their armor plates going from the chest to the waist along the sides of their bodies. This gives the armor a more "organic" look to it, though I personally think that's just the animation style they used in the film as opposed to a deliberate change to the design of the Evas overall.

Kotobukiya's Unit 02 EoE figure sticks to the new proportions rather well, translating them to action figure form.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Along with the the MP Eva from the same figure line.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Now we come to
Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0/1.1/1.11 You are (not) alone

In 1.0, we have a return to close to the original proportions of the Eva units seen in NGE. Broader shoulders, thinner waist, and we get some cool new color apps to boot. Unit 00 looks less like a traffic cone and more like an actual prototype testing unit and Unit 01 gains some green stripes and accents to offset the majority single-shade purple seen in NGE. But the main thing here is that the units look physically much more like NGE than EoE.
SPOILER: Show
Image

I couldn't find a definitive 1.0 concept piece for Unit 01, hence why it isn't pictured. That said, Unit 00 will be my primary go-to for 1.0/1.1/1.11.

The Tamashi Spec Unit 00 sticks very well to the proportions seen in the movie.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Bandai's model of the 1.0 Unit 00 has slightly more exaggerated shoulder proportions but that's more due to the type of shoulder joint used in the model than to a deliberate change made to the overall proportions of the model.
SPOILER: Show
Image

So now it's onward to
Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0/2.2/2.22 You can (not) advance

Here, the Eva units take on a more EoE appearance to their proportions with slightly narrowed chest and thicker waists, making their torsos appear more "blocky".
SPOILER: Show
ImageImageImage

The only exception to this change in proportions is Eva Mark 06, which has an altered torso and arms designed to maker it look taller and thinner.
SPOILER: Show
Image

The Mark 06 actually has an additional plate of armor on the torso, which would lend to making the Mark 06 taller than the other Evas such as Units 00, 01, and 02.

Then the latest entry
Rebuild of Evangelion 3.0/3.3/3.33 You can (not) redo

3.0/3.3/3.33 is unique in the fact that we see TWO stylings of armor and proportions on the Evas in one film. In the first example, Unit 02β and Mark (Unit) 08α maintain the armor shape and proportions carried over from 2.0/2.2/2.22. Then, after their initial appearance, we are introduced to Unit 02γ and Mark (Unit) 08β and we see new armor that furthers the "blocky" torso look of the units in addition to completely changing the exterior armor appearance of the units themselves.
SPOILER: Show
ImageImageImage

We are also introduced to the Eva Mark 09.
SPOILER: Show
ImageImage

The Mark (Unit) 09 is clearly a successor to Unit 00 and has an armor appearance that looks much more like Unit 00's in 2.0/2.2/2.22 but has portions in common with the new designs from 3.0/3.3/3.33, namely along the unit's back and shoulders.

Finally, we have Eva (Unit) 13
SPOILER: Show
ImageImage

Eva (Unit) 13 seems to combine design elements from both Unit 01 (head, waist, arms) and the new armor layout of Unit 02γ and Mark (Unit) 08β (legs, shoulders, back). The "taller" chest and addition of another set of arms adds to Eva (Unit) 13's height, making it the tallest Eva unit we've seen thus far along with giving it its own bit of flair and uniqueness.

********************BREAK********************

So how exactly is this different from the older "Eva Anatomy" thread that was posted here? Well this is more specifically designed to deal with the changes we see in outward designs and proportions in the Evas themselves as opposed to dealing with anatomical items such as skin color, fingernails (y/n) and other related items.

Also, which set of proportions or armor appearance do you prefer on the Evas? Are you an NGE purist? Do you like the blended torso armor of EoE? Do you like the newest set of armor seen in 3.0/3.3/3.33? Feel free to tell us and say why.

Just remember that everyone is entitled to like whichever one they prefer for their own reasons. This isn't intended to create an argument about "which Eva is the best." :)

Fixed and... I actually finished my post lol. I accidentally hit "post" instead of "preview" and the whole thing went up prematurely before it was finished. XD

That same image is just displaying the word "image"

Anyway, I liked your post, and I'd have to say I like the original designs better. They look far more interesting, and it looks more organic than the heavy blockier armor of the rebuilds.

Definitely have to agree with you there. I was a big fan of the original NGE and to a lesser extent, EoE. I definitely prefer the proportions of the units we see in NGE and 1.0/1.1/1.11 and I was very happy to see the updated color layouts in the first Rebuild film. When 2.0 came out, I was rather on the fence with the new proportions of the Eva units but was otherwise happy with the continued new colors, Unit 02's new head crest and Unit 00 keeping its yellow/white/gray (should have kept the white above the knee but oh well...) layout instead of going blue/white. Then at the beginning of 3.0 I was glad to see that at least the designs and proportions hadn't really changed on the new Unit 02 and Mark 08...until we see them again after the opening scene and then my reaction was more :???: .

I prefer the original designs for 00 blue version (Never been fond of the orange design) and 01 but I do prefer 02's design in rebuild as I like the more demon like crest and face as I think it fits better but body wise for 02 I prefer the End Of Evangelion design and I do like Mari's pink 08 unit from 3.33.

Mari is the best Eva Unit design. (Still considering that to be somewhat of a possibility.)

(...maybe.)

Considering we're talking about Unit 08 here, do you prefer the α design and proportions that mirror 2.0/2.2/2.22 or do you prefer the β version with the new armor?

I prefer the 08a and my reason for this is I get the impression that 08 is meant to to be a sniper unit, so the thinner build makes more sense to me than the 08b which looks more muscled and doesn't really fit in my view as 02 is meant to be muscle powered unit.

See, the armor on Unit-08β looks like it would severely hamper mobility by having less articulation points. With Unit-08α (and all the other armor of that design) there is a clear amount of flexibility built into those spaces between armor plates that Unit-08β doesn't have, and taking away some of the mobility from the EVA.

@ArvisTaljik, Oh, I'm not referring to Eva 08 in any fashion. I'm referring to Mari herself somehow being an actual Evangelion unit. If that is the case, then I prefer her over pretty much any version of any Eva unit.

Considering the nature of the thread which you reference, I'm pretty sure that's very off-topic for the original intent of this thread lol.

I know, but, just in case...

That aside, I do like the interchangeability of Unit 02 ß in general. Also, B-Type equipment (or its nearest NTE counterpart) looks far more elegant in Eva Q than it did in NGE.

This is the mecha equivalent of Nami from One Piece. Their torso is way too slim for my tastes, it looks extremely frail.

So it seems the most preferred armor and proportions (based on the responses) are those seen in Rebuild 2.0.
Honestly, I figured that people might end up preferring the 2.0 looks only because none of the proportions aren't overly exaggerated and their bodies look a bit more "realistic" in overall shape.

Unit 02 and Unit 08 were refitted with new, wider, triangular knee pads like ones on Unit 13. Mark 09 is the only Eva with old style knee pads in 3.0. I wonder if there is an in-universe explanation to that.

Mark 09 was still under NERV's control in 3.0, while Unit-02 and Unit-08 were under WILLE's control, and thus received some sort of atheistic upgrade. Or the Mark 09 wasn't compatible with the upgrade, and was left the way it was.
