Yeah. You read right. This is for everything that doesn't have anything to do with Eva.

I'm kind of a hobbyist (read: terrible) linguist, and I was just wondering what languages you folks speak! We may have some real (read: not like me) polyglots here...

I speak fluent English, intermediate Ancient Hebrew/Aramaic (unfortunately somewhat decayed due to lack of use...), upper-beginner Japanese/Latin, and assorted bits of a bunch of others.

I'm fluent in English and Spanish and I know some bits of French and Japanese mostly due to watching foreign movies.

Huh! Someone started this exact same thread at the QC forum yesterday... So this is what I wrote:

I speak only English. However, I can just about manage shopping and getting a room for the night in French and German. As I now have a Japanese daughter-in-law I am trying to start a Japanese course - but I doubt, with so little language-fu to build on and the ravages of age on my memory capacity, that I will reach a useful level with it (however interesting I may find what I do learn).

Only English.

My Japanese is all over the place and I wouldn't know how to grade it, short of taking a proficiency test. Much better than nothing, but absolute garbage compared to being fluent.

Took a couple years each of German and Latin back in school. Know most of the Greek and Cyrillic alphabets.

Polish and some kind of Engrish. I was learning Russian when it was compulsory in schools and some basics of German, but sadly I forgot everything, besides Cyrillic. I would gladly learn Japanese though, but the writing system is convoluted enough to make me postpone this ordeal on and on.

A combination of the two. My school only offered up to intermediate. All these years later I can't really say anything useful and my unassisted reading comprehension is probably that of a small child. Though I suppose I know enough about what I don't know that, under the right circumstances, it's possible I would "clean up nicely".

I speak two languages, italian and english. Languages that I understand without being a fluent speaker are french and spanish. I can read latin but I'm getting rusty and I can't speak it at all.

So the question now is: How exactly do you pronounce semicolons and parentheses? As pauses of varying length? And for those languages that have meaningful capitalization, how are the uppercase letters pronounced?

I can speak the English, u71l1z3 b451c l337 5p34k, 4|\\||) 4|)\\/4|\\|(3|) |_337 5|D34|< (yes, that exists), and that's about it. I can get the gist from two other languages (Spanish and French), one from watching a load of Spanish movies on Netflix, and the other because I took French in high school.

I can also count using only roman numerals.

Semicolons and parentheses are interpretational in their use, and can be written in different ways, still sounding the same. Much like dotted rhythms in music.

I manage english and spanish.
Some aspects of spanish still escape me, like tildes/accénts (I know absolutely nothing of how or when to use 'em, except via recognizing some specific words).
Apparently my pronunciation is also kinda weird? My relatives say my general accent is too neutral and it gives me away.

Many years ago I gave french and portuguese a try (only remember a couple of words of each) and in my childhood I got to learn some Japanese thanks to the tuition of a friend's mom... And, of course, I've forgotten pretty much everything ~ *sigh*
I'm a lurker at heart.

True; but I believe the remark was just a joke about me "speaking" computer languages

Aside from English, I know Mandarin Chinese and used to have decent German. I can still understand it but I can't really hold more than a basic conversation without momentarily forgetting what the words for even common abstract words like "realize" or "miss" are.

I don't find Japanese that intimidating since it shares a lot with Chinese. I took a proficiency test in college and got rated as "beginning" in terms of conversation but "advanced" in reading. OTOH my Chinese still needs tons of improvement.

Well, I know no Computer languages... I've never mustered enough willpower to learn one, though it sure would be handy, I guess!

I'm relatively fluent in English, also German's my mother tongue. I've taken a semester of Japanese, but that's been some time ago, my efforts in learning more rise and wane, depending on how much time I find... But I can get the gist of easy texts and understand enough to tell how accurate subs are in Anime.
