.hack//G.U. Last Recode (HD remaster coming to PS4)

Weekly Famitsu has revealed that CyberConnect2's .hack//G.U. trilogy, originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2006, is getting a HD remaster for the PS4 titled .hack//G.U. Last Recode.

CC2 states they wanted to release a remaster for younger generations since it's been so long. Perhaps this re-master is good marketing for a new game in the future?

.hack//G.U. Last Recode will be in 1080P/60 FPS. In addition to updated graphics, there are a bunch of tweaks to the battle system and other components of the game.

No release date announced yet, but the game is 80% complete. Most likely it will be in 2017 since it is the 15th anniversary of the franchise and the actual events of the fictional game take place in 2017. Neat.

I think those are way older and much harder to remake. They're not just porting GU, they're adjusting it to make the game more approachable to modern players (lots has changed since the PS2 era). Since GU is more recent (2006), I think it's simpler to update and release. IMOQ would be harder since they would literally need to be remade from the ground up. If this sells well, IMOQ is next, I'm pretty sure.

A "tetrology" is four (three is "trilogy").
"Being human, having your health; that's what's important." (from: Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi )
"As long as we're all living, and as long as we're all having fun, that should do it, right?" (from: The Eccentric Family )

Hopefully this is a hit it'll lead to a remake of the anime to give us a show that isn't boring

I never actually finished the G.U. games. I think I just never got my hands on a copy of the third one. I really enjoyed the first two, so I'll definitely be getting this once it hits the states. Thinking about it more and more is getting my hype up. Much cooler concept execution than Sword Art Online.

It's a game within a game. Gameception!

Anybody else playing this? I forgot how immersive it can be. I've been pleasantly obssessed with it since release. The story telling holds up really well and I'm compelled to just plow through the maim campaignq. However, the updates made to the gameplay are good as well, and simple grinding is pretty enjoyable.

I sort of want to play a MMO now.

I was a huge .hack fanboy, before I've discovered Evangelion. The reason I've picked up the DVDs for Eva, was because I wanted to see what else Sadamato was involved with. Also lead me to FLCL (which was never broadcasted here, as far as I know). Talk about luck, huh.

Have you seen //quantum? It holds up very well. Also the Intro Sequence for //link is amazing.

But Ray's not too wrong... most of the franchise ranges somewhere in mediocre territory, but thankfully, my nostalgia makes me blind to that. Also, the OST for .hack//sign is still my favorite Anime OST.

The Last Recode will be released in Europe, which will be the first time the G.U. games will even be available here. I remember that I've begged my mother to drive me to some strangers house, whose address I found on the Internet to disable the region lock on my PS2, so I could import G.U. from the states.
That's how dedicated I was to that franchise. I didn't regret that decision, I loved those games back then. I spent lots of the little money I've earned into this franchise, while my parents shook their head in bewilderment. But they let me, nevertheless as it was my money, lol.
I had great fun with G.U. and I'm sure, it holds up much better than the original games in the franchise.
Good times. Nostalgia fills my ♥. Being 15 again.
So now, I'm looking at the game on Amazon, and man, I'd love to have a pretty Collector's Edition with some Sadamato Art. (They even granted him the first (!) credit as Package Designer (!) in the intro, talk about how names might move product, lol) But what we have is a horrible looking generic box art for a game, I probably won't play again.
But then again, maybe I should buy it, because I'm sure this is a test to see if .hack is still able to move product.

Also, the amazon review Q&A thingies hurt me deeply... People asking if this is better then SAO. I feel old.

I feel the same. It makes me wonder what plans they have for the original series of games; a more intensive overhaul for a rerelease?

Playing this now, I wonder what the World would look like as a real life MMO. With the area words, job classes, etc. Has lots of potential, methinks.

It really does. I so hope, CC is working on a The World project for Sony VR. You know, it would fit perfectly.
But given the still relatively low market saturation of VR gears, that might remain a wet dream. (for now).

The newest interview with CC2 and Namco suggest that they're interested in more .hack, they flat out state it. And Piros in the game (in the game's lore he is a graphic designer for CC corp) has new lines that R:3 is being developed - which could be humor or foreshadowing. We'll see where the franchise goes in the future.

I just finished Vol 4 last night. It's much less of an additional episode to the series, and seems more like an extended ending or epilogue for Vol 3. It wraps up a couple loose ends, and teases heavily at the idea of The World R:3. I was rather disappointed by the level cap not being raised and the fact that like half of the game features were removed in Vol 4 (no more email, forums, access to certain towns, areas, etc), but those were my first indicators that it was going to be a short episode in the series. I had already reached the level cap of 150 in Vol 3 wasting my time on the post-game dungeon, and due to this Vol 4 offered very little incentive to engage in battles, so I equipped the item that allows you to avoid enemy encounters and sped through the entire Vol. That all said, the new anime cut scenes in Vol 4 are freaking gorgeous and very promising when it comes to the future direction of the franchise, and the new mechanics accompanying Haseo's Final Form are fun to play with.

For those thinking about getting the Last Recode, keep in mind that Vol 4 is not a full new episode, but the story is quite nice. The meat of the series is still Vol 1-3, and Vol 4 is more of a teaser of what's to come. I had a blast revisiting this story and the characters, and I was able to finally complete the series as I never had access to all 3 volumes before. And I'm more excited than ever to see what the franchise has to offer in the future.

Congratz on beating GU! These games had an impact on me back in the day, hope this series will be a memorable one for you :)
Have you checked out the other entries in the series? Some anime and other games are quite good, too.
