Which anime of today will be considered future classics?

Back in the 2000s when I was in my teen years, there were plenty of ongoing shows that I never really considered would be considered "classics" a decade in the future. Plenty of shows like FMA, Gurren Lagann, Naruto, Bleach, FLCL, Eureka Seven, Death Note and many others were still ongoing or relatively new at the time. Me and my social circle never thought far ahead and tried to see which anime would live the test of time and fandom interest.

So I wanted to make a fun little thread where we can make predictions on which current anime might be considered classics 10 years in the future? For the sake of variety, lets set 2010-2019 as the range, but it'll definitely be more fun if we work with current shows that aren't more than 2 years old.

Here are some of my picks of this decade's anime titles that I think will be brought up in the future as the shows defining this decade:
(do note that I have not seen all these shows, nor do I like some the picks - but my opinion of the show doesn't change the fact of how big it was within the community)

-Durarara - Will be labeled as unique storytelling and style
-Oriemo (my little sister can't be this cute) - Will be one of the more notable harems
-Steins;Gate - Will get the "Anime Classic" label
-Fate Zero - Will be a highly regarded mature high quality story, a la Garden of Sinners
-Hunter x Hunter 2011- Will be considered one of the top shonen series of the decade
-SAO - Unfortunately will get the "Anime Classic" label
-Kuroko no Basket - Will be regarded as the best entry in the sport genre for this decade (along with that volleyball show)
-JoJo - Will get the "Anime Classic" label
-The Nisemonogatori franchise - Will get the "Anime Classic" label
-Kill la Kill - Will be the "gurren lagann" of this decade, but not as good
-Space Dandy - Will age well and reach the same status as "samurai champloo"
-Tokyo Ghoul - Will be considered one of the top shonen series of the decade
-Assassination Classroom - Will be considered one of the top shonen series of the decade
-One Punch Man - Will get the "Anime Classic" label
-My Hero Academia - Will be considered one of the top shonen series of the decade
-Yuri On Ice - Will get the "Anime Classic" label

Those are my predictions as of Jan 2017. We still have about two years before this decade ends, and I'm sure we'll get at least a few more quality shows to put on this list. Also, similarly, some of these shows might be completely forgotten in two years and I'll take them off this list. It'll be fun to come back here in 10 years (if I can remember LOL) to check my predictions  -- maybe I'll write them down..

I would add Uchouten Kazoku (The Eccentric Family). I keep my fingers crossed that the upcoming second season will match the first...
Also Mawaru Penguindrum just fits into your time limits, as does Anohana.

Shows like FMA: Brotherhood and Tatami Galaxy are already considered great, but they could possibly become even more praised in the years the come.

Steins;Gate is a bit overpraised, but doesn't stop me from seeing why so many people love it. I'd expect this to be a full-blown franchise almost on terms as Evangelion.

In terms of shows that aren't that well known, I'd choose Paranoia Agent and Kino's Journey (The former especially for the underground).

Well, I'd say there's a few shows that are guaranteed to become classics, if they aren't already: Psycho Pass, Shin Sekai Yori, Yamato 2199, and so on...

I get the feeling that a few might be just a bit too under the radar to become classics: Rakugo, 91 Days, Concrete Revolutio, etc. These shows all have a consistent following, but I'm not sure its enough to make them be remembered 10, 20 years from now on.

It's a bit hard to foresee, but some great shows won't be classics. For instance, Death Parade, which is honestly in my top 10 of the last decade - it'll be regarded as a gem, but never will it be a classic or a mainstream success. In that regard, stuff like Psycho Pass won't ever be more than just a good show, or so I think.

Another one I forgot is Attack on Titan - for self explanatory reasons lol

Also, nice MAL, great taste in Anime

Really? I'd think the ability to spawn a sequel and a movie would indicate some lasting appeal...

Then again, I haven't even considered the divide between the Japanese audience and everybody else. For example, Yamato is a well know symbol in Japan, one of undisputed classics of Japanese Animation and yet, almost nobody outside of Japan has ever seen any of the many installments in that franchise. Were it not for 2199, it would likely be even less know.
I feel there's a big divide between the audiences and that leads to the creation of different classics for one and the other.

Can't believe none of my fellow Evageeks have mentioned Madoka, but maybe that just goes to show that it is not a classic.

It's not as if my opinion matters, but I think it is. Fantastic soundtrack, character design, animation and style. Basically started a new genre.

Oh, and Rebellion is the best anime film since End of Evangelion.

I agree with crazyguy about Rakugo, and feel the same way about Ping-Pong. Both are incredible, but don't have the biggest followings and will probably fade into obscurity. But if people would rather watch No Game No Life than good anime, who am I to judge??

I think SnK is the defining anime of the decade, for better or worse. Kill La Kill is right up there with it. I base this belief off of the number cosplayers at Acen, so we may not all agree!
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

You're right! For some reason I thought Madoka came a couple of years earlier and so fell outside the OP's requirement - but I was wrong, and it should be listed.

Oh yeah! Madoka! Of course. It is interesting, sold like crazy... It'll definitely be considered as a classic.
Madoka: Rebellion is a fascinating piece of art, but it's nearly not as incremental as End of Eva. I think that, if the 3rd part delivers, the Kizumonogatari film series will end up being higher regarded than Rebellion.

The only real answer to this is KonoSuba.

Obviously K-ON! is already a classic so that would be my only other addendum

I'll third the suggestion of Madoka, not because it's a "grimdark version of Mahou Shoujo/the Peanutbutterandjellyon of Magical Girls" or whatever (that's been done many times before, at least if Tines is to be believed) but because IMO it's a pretty touching and impeccably executed tragedy. I'd rank the ending as up there with EoTV as one of my favourite anime endings ever.

Like with Eva, though, the "alternative ending" movie can go die in a fire. Seriously. Fuck Rebellion.

Rebellion is a continuation, not an alternate ending. Only real points of similarity are that both films are artistically daring and as likely to please fans of what came before as piss them off.

Fixed that for you.

Seriously. EoE was Anno venting his depression by taking a gigantic shit on the characters, with everyone behaving like a brain-damaged moron, and culminating in one of the most pathetically petty and spiteful endings ever, and Rebellion WOULD have been great were it not for the utterly pointless WHAT A TWEEST ending that was literally shoved onto Urobachi against his will so that there was potential for a sequel. The only real difference is that one was the result of mental instability whilst the other was the result of corporate meddling.

Fuck EoE and fuck Rebellion.

If you want anyone to respect your own viewpoints, I would suggest you present them without aggressively demeaning what's said by others.

Saying "the irony is palpable" is the exact opposite of "dropping it". It's engaging in self-indulgent interpersonal sniping (and at a staff member, no less).

You're out of line, Squigsquasher. Remember that you're here only on a probationary basis. If you would like to return to exile, by all means keep acting like this.

Fuck EoE and fuck Rebellion.

1) You're a complete asshole

2) WRT Rebellion: Setting aside that the entire movie would be pointless if not for the ending that it was clearly designed around to begin with, you're spreading a meme that flat-out isn't true. There was no forced change or corporate interference. Urobuchi wasn't sure how to develop things past the original ending because of the constraints he thought he would be under, and he was pleased when Shinbou gave him permission to change the dynamic between Madoka and Homura. Emphasis on "permission". Whether or not you think the resulting movie is good or total crap, at least get the facts straight.

While there are a handful of people here who might agree with you, I would argue that the simple fact that many more can get a whole lot more out of EoE shows that this summary is wrong, and that those who espouse it are missing what is really there (not for lack of available explanations, I'd also say). If you want people to take notice of your view, rather getting yourself lined up with the "nay-sayers", you'll need to give proper illustrations of why your view is better and what is wrong with the other analyses.

Rebellion WOULD have been great were it not for the utterly pointless WHAT A TWEEST ending that was literally shoved onto Urobachi against his will so that there was potential for a sequel.

I quite liked Rebellion in itself; but I really hated that it trampled so comprehensively on the ending achieved by Madoka before it. It feels such a forced continuation for the sake of a franchise that any enjoyment I might find in it is completely sapped away. Given that context, the twist is no big deal, really.
