So that Panty and Stocking sequel probably isn't happening at this point. Hopefully the rights will end up with Trigger who are actually qualified to make the sequel.

Also hopefully the Aim for the Top! rights end up with Khara :3

Can Gainax even afford a lawsuit at this point? I mean they haven't made an anime on their own in years, they had to resort to Tomato farming to make ends meet for gods sake!!

I also really wanna know what the hell is up with Yamaga as far as industry politics go.
Khara people left
Trigger people left
FLCL rights got sold to Production IG
We find out that Eva rights went fully to Khara at the end of 2014.
We find out in this article that Khara loaned Gainax 100 million yen in August 2014, which was presumably part of the Eva rights deal.
So even after all the actual animation talent left Gainax they still had a revenue stream from royalties on properties but also outright selling the properties.

Yet all this time Yamaga couldn't get anything made. He went to Singapore to try and get funding for Aoki Uru and it still didn't materialize.

Is Yamaga blackballed in the industry for some reason?

EDIT: Ok actual timeline time

2013 March - Yamaga announces Gainax is finally making Aoki Uru
2014 August - Khara loans Gainax 100mil yen
2014 October - Gainax's name starts disappearing from all Eva stuff including the official website. Eva is now owned by Khara and Eva Production Committee
2014 December - Detail about Aoki Uru hint at shall we say irregular financial approach: "Instead of the typical Japanese production committee, Uru in Blue will be produced by Uru in Blue LLP, a limited liability partnership comprised of various investors and partners. This LLP is based in Singapore, and they are currently seeking investors."
2015 January - Announcement of formation of Gainax Fukushima
2015 August - FLCL rights sold to Production IG
2016 March - Gainax West is set up in Kobe
2016 December - Khara wants its money back

So were those two extra companies set up for further financial fuckery? D:

Whatever is going on behind the scenes at Gainax, I'm glad Anno & the other creatives got out. It just seemed like that place became a bad deal. In the later years only Hiroyuki Imaishii could get anything of worth made & even then seemed sometimes stifled.

Correct me if I'm wrong or just dreaming it, but I remember reading that when asked to films for Gurren Lagann that Imaishii was excited to do space based grand-scale sequels & Hiroyuki Yamaga told him "No, compilation films only!"

Either way, glad Anno has Evangelion completely under his control.

"Gainax, there's no such thing as forever!"

Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

Yeah, but from what I've read up, the LAST anime gainax produced only made about a quarter of that.

From the AnimeNewsNetwork article:
According to a private credit research company that the Mainichi Shimbun quotes, Gainax had an income of 240 million yen (about US$2.10 million) during the period ending in July 2016, a tenth of what it earned five years ago.

Having to fork over $878,000 is never pretty for a company. But it's even worse if that amount is just shy of half your total earnings for a seven month period.

So, I knew that people were leaving Gainax, but why are they leaving Gainax? Did they not pay their people enough? Did they pull the breaks on certain projects? How did Gainax turn themselves into a shell of the company they used to be?

A couple of updates to this story. The first is that Gainax made a post on the matter. The second is that the studio had moved to an old apartment building. That just might show in how their dire their straits are.

It's clear from what the ex-Gainax big names have been doing since, in Khara and Trigger, that creative freedom must have been a big motivator. Whether that's from internal management disagreements, or simply needing to shed an accumulated burden of obligations and other baggage in a 25+ year old company would be difficult to tell from the outside.

I remember years back (mid to late last decade) some threads on /a/ with pictures of all the various animation studios offices, and even then the Gainax office was clearly low-rent compared with the others.

Frankly, after Pleiades was hailed as Gainax's swan-song at the time, I'm surprised that they're still around and even creating offshoots like West, rather than gracefully winding up.

I wanted an update on the ADV/Gainax lawsuit for Christmas. I guess this is a good enough substitute.

This may be one of the last chapters of the glorious Gainax history.
