something odd in the geofront

just got done re-watching the EoE (again) and i realized there was something odd during the fighting between the UN forces and Asuka. She activates the Eva from under the lake, picks up the Nerv patrol cruiser, and throws it at her enemies(on of my favorite parts). But what is a big cruiser ship doing in that lake to begin with? I'm not looking for an official answer (because i doubt there is one) but what are some quasi-realistic reasons why Nerv would need a ship in a man made lake in a geofront? or was it just artistic license of the creators? =)

Artistic License. I mean, there's a full... and probably automated.... fleet swimming in the LCL around Lilith's feet. It's not the weirdest thing that could be there. Maybe it might have been a stop-gap solution, an old cruiser dropped down to provide a basic defence while NERV's actual defence systems were being installed.

When the Geofront was finished, it was too much effort to get it out again, so they left it down there.

I would say defense reasons.

The lake isn't that large, and typically a water vessel is used to defend against other water vessels out where there's no land. Otherwise, why not just build defenses on land?

Well maybe the patrol cruiser had a special weapon.
And a great amount of fire power.

If anything it could just represent a show of force. ( Not that this stopped the SSDF completly ignoring it altogether during EoE until Asuka launched it at them) It's combat capabitlities against angels is pretty much 0 with thier ATF's so it is pretty much just as good as all the other anti air and ground defence that NERV uses to 'Waste taxpayers money'. It was unmanned after all and if it had been manned it could have been quite effective against all those tanks on the shore and roadline.

Having said this, if there is an evangelion cage entrance under that lake, it could just be a ship there to monitor whats going on under the water.

It's more than likely it is just there to look hard and provide (as ornette said), some basic naval protection against sea based units. Maybe it is just a simple precaution against possible terrorist attacks.

The destroyer is there for the same reason as the cross-shaped explosions.

The only possible 'legitimate' reason I can come up with for having a warship in the Geofront lake would be that it was put there in anticipation of engaging an enemy that had made it into the GF, and was hiding out in the lake, with ASW (plus the destroyer served as a somewhat mobile AA platform, to engage targets in the intra-GF airspace).

However, having a ship that size down there strains credulity, since there is no way to get it there in one piece, which means that it was brought down in pieces, and put together in place, which implies that they had a working shipyard down there to build just one ship :crazytwirl:

Several small patrol boats would be more believable than a destroyer.

It all depends on how badly Japan was flooded after Second Impact; the ship could have been stranded there when the waters receded.

Gendo's office should have been like this.

In that Sonic the Hedgehog: Genesis fanfic, Sonic calls Gendo "Blackbeard" several times, so...

My reason for the big battleship being there: Mr. Anno foresaw the premiere of Titanic and the development of the AMV Hell project, so he left us with the necessary material to link the two together.

It fell through the hole made by the N2 mine. therefore, Asuka didn't actually kill anyone when using the ship, since they were all already dead.

Why did they leave one side more-or-less 'raw' but bother to flatten out the rest?

Is the lake there just to support the pointless destroyer?

How does the cartrain hang from the concave surface of the ceiling?

How do they actually launch the Evas upwards into the city if the whole complex is beneath this gigantic hollow?

Why even build the city above ground if they had all this space below that goes almost entirely unused?

I'm telling ya, nothing in the geofront makes any damned sense.
