I'm not sure how ANY rape scene can be considered "tame" in the first place.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

I agree but I also think its all about you frame it my view is that it must be from the victims perspective, not the villains and it should not be sexualized as this can make the viewer think its just bad sex or a form of kink when its not it and it has horrific consequence for the victim regardless of gender. Its fair to say that anime has a problematic history with this issue and I think Goblin Slayer just further brought this issue to light and I think if it had been framed like the manga and you got to know the characters before they died the backlash might have been less.

Having read the manga chapter where the rape happens I don't really see how it was any more focused on the victim. The anime seemed to adapt that scene faithfully. Has for the character backstories, they felt like pointless fluff to make you go "oh no the poor kids". I don't need a generic backstory to feel empathy for characters that aren't going to last more than five minutes.

This said, I might be alone on this opinion.

As for the rape scene being tame, I don't mean in terms of violence or exposure. It's more in the sense that it happens to some nobody character that vanishes after. I find that rape scenes, or even just the attempt can be much more impact full when it's happening to some character you care about or, even better, when a character you like is doing the rape. I hope I'm making sense.

This new Winter season feels pretty sparse. The only two shows I'm watching are sequels.

Are we talking about the same roster here? I'm still in the 3-episode test stage for enough new titles (8-10 of them, none of them sequels*, not counting carry-over, about twice as many as last winter) this season that, even if some of them fall by the way-side, I'm beginning to wonder when I'm going to be fitting the backlog in this quarter.

Completed -- Frame Arms Girl remained a harmless fluffy series of toy commercials masquerading as Pantsu Witches meets Angelic Layer to the end; it was long enough ago that I'd forgotten most of the actual story in Dennou Coil (as opposed to the "Illegal of the Week" sequence), so it was like watching it from fresh and it was still a delight. That moment, though, when you realize that Searchmaton is using Grid Fixer Beam (it's super effective!).

Now playing -- it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Hoozuki no Reitetsu S2 would pass the 3-episode test, as it is exactly more of the same thing that its S1 delivered.

In other news -- Fall's Sora Umi, the heavily dropped (and 5ch candidate for "kuso anime of the season") mobage adaptation apparently barely mustered 1/8 frt in sales (which is still more than RErideD managed).

*Boogiepop Phantom (2000) is a side-story/epilogue to the LN series that Boogiepop (2019) is adapting

Admittedly, some titles I'm (now) looking forward to haven't started yet, and I was discounting them.

But I'm curious Professor, if you eliminate School/ Slice of life titles, how many of those "8" are left?

I picked it up by chance; yeah, it is good.

Totally misunderstood what was happening with the guy's face. I thought it was implying the mask guy was "gifting" the MC the face of the deadman the former was working on

But no, that's just silly.

The MC's earning back his original face that the demon took from him. Y'know, like moonspeak folklore tell us can happen.

School, SoL -- like Yuki Yuna, do you mean?

Of the 5 watched so far, Boogiepop has a school setting/high school student main cast, and He and His Cat is SoL. Most likely to drop are Promised Neverland (Noitamina slot, but shonen) and Girly Air Force (depending on the ratio of combat to harem squadron shenanigans), while Price of Smiles has the potential to be a decent mecha series.

In the queue, Magical Girl Spec-ops Asuka seems to have some school setting, as does Endro~!, but KemoFure2 definitely doesn't (though may be considered SoL). If I do eventually go for Mini Toji as a make-weight, that is likely to be pure school+SoL, but it's not going to get my immediate attention, so is not counted in the 8-10, no sequels.

Added -- Also adding Virtual-san to the list, also as a make-weight, because of the gratuitous NGE references/crossovers being promised. *sigh*
Not sure about its >School >Slice of life status, though.

Updated -- Yes, MGSO Asuka does start with a school setting.
And you could call this 'slice of life', I guess  SPOILER: Show

Nice one, haha. I'll be watching that Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka this season, though it has a pretty terrible English title. It seems to be typical seinen stuff so far, terrible animation and all. I'm not expecting for this one to blow my mind, but the first two episodes have been fun, which is all I can really ask for with anime. I'm predicting the main character's friends are going to die in a very unfortunate way....

Watching that on Fridays when I get home from work along with the new Boogiepop, which I'm really liking so far. It'll probably be my show of the season. The OP and music are great and I like the animation style(though not as much as the older series, which I guess was more stylish). This one seems to be a bit more coherent than that one, so that's nice, though it's still quite weird. Boogiepop has one of my favorite character designs of all time and I love whenever she's got some screentime.

Then SAO, Jojo, and Run with the Wind are holding strong.

This season does seem to have a lot of cool shows, but nothing mind blowing. Next season is going to be insane.

Also watched Sirius the Jaeger last week, which was definitely okay. PA Works always has nicely animated shows, but beyond that there wasn't too much substance to this one. There were some cool fight scenes, but for the most part the plot and characters weren't anything to write home about. A tad disappointing, but whatever.

I also rewatched DARLING in the Franxx, which I did enjoy quite a bit, since I knew where everything was going and I could just sit back and enjoy the ride(until the aliens showed up, jk). A few things I appreciated more on the rewatch was the quality of the animation in each episode and a nice clear and concise plot; it might indeed be strange when VIRM shows up, but it's not confusing or anything. I wasn't really crazy about the VIRM thing on either viewing, but if that's what the director wanted to do, that's what he wanted to do. I just wish there would have been some kind of foreshadowing, but I didn't really notice any. I feel like they ended up doing the VIRM thing so that they could show the power of love and all that(it can destroy some crazy advanced evil organization) and so they could have a giant 02 in a wedding dress floating through outer space. But anyway, I love the first 21 episodes of the show, and I love the character and mech designs. I had it below Rahxephon and Eureka Seven before, but now I think I'll take DARLING over Rahxephon.
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

I counted 6. My stomach is churning. :spew: Is one of them at least like FMP, where they're intentionally trying to break or turn genre conventions on their head?

For instance:

Kaguya-sama: Love is War

The OP is better than it has any right to be. No forgettable J-pop song, no meandering montage with a bland, out of context, or hard-to-describe theme.

It's enka music hard-wired to the actual theme of the show.

It's no Chanto Iwanakya Aisanai, but I'll take it.

You :spew: but then seem to remark favourably about Kaguya, when that is exactly the sort of >School title that gets pre-emptively dropped from my "even thinking about maybe watching this season" candidates. Not sure how that computes.

Now, I didn't expect Girly Air Force to make your cut (recalling some years back a conversation in an earlier iteration of this thread about anthropomorphised war materiel, that I can't find to link just ATM), nor, for different reasons covered in other such discussion, Grimm's Notes  .

Of the ones I'm watching, MGSO Asuka, at least, is genre-bending (it's actually one of those 80s Hollywood action flicks about some ex-cop/marine/special force/CIA-guy being called back from retirement to save the day, just with some sparkly mahou shoujo frosting). I've also never seen a mahou shoujo with promo material like this before --

Updated -- Endro~! turns out to be way more JRPG than school, even if the conceit is that the Demon Lord the heroes will have one day defeated is actually teaching at the Adventurers' Academy; while Price of Smiles has stepped directly into that sub-genre of "ground-force mechs with no aerial capability or separate air-support because reasons", and, at the moment, is giving the appearance of being UNDERSTANDING-free.

Because the OP isn't trite in the ways I would have guessed, based simply on genre conventions.

But hey, even if that explanation isn't good enough, I didn't say that I wasn't a hypocrite.

Oh lord, I'm getting Shirogane no Ishi: Argevollen flashbacks. That name was way too hard to remember.

But hey, no recycling of a Gundam staple? That almost makes up for not having one of the two natural predators of walking tanks.

Do they still have giant banana peals? Or how about trip wires?

Ghost Sweeper Mikami:
So yeah, it's a really good episodic 1990s supernatural adventure show with not a single shitty episode stinking up the bunch. At 45 episodes, that's pretty amazing consistency. It's also an absolutely heathenous anime that dares to suggest that high school is actually pretty lame, and all the cool and exciting things happen in the adult working life (at least if you're a real estate adjacent entrepreneur like ghost sweepers are). It takes 31 episodes for this to be even mentioned, and episode 34 is the one and only time our protagonists briefly visit a high school to fight a possessed desk that houses a pocket dimension. The said dimension itself is a horrendous limbo version of high school, and the episode makes a pretty blunt point that high school sucks. I didn't know an anime could be capable of such heresy.

The (male) MC turns into Alice (from Wonderland) as his hero-form, with the usual mahou shoujo henshin scene. And one of his (female) companions turns into Robin Hood, only without the centre-stage transformation.

As of episode 2, the secret weapons that have been deployed are three (3) mechs with extremely limited flight on the one side vs ski-jump style launch ramps that everyone can use on the other.

I'd like to say I was aware of that, but alas; I think I skipped it due to a poor word on your end.

Death from above is quite potent.

I'm guessing their damage output also gets a charge bonus for the first 15 seconds of melee. Sounds like they have to watch out for pikes/halberds, and cycle charge to win the day.

Bonus points if they speak a french accent and offer undying service to the Lady of the Lake.

I mean, yeah. But the nature of the story told kinda differs, so it's only natural.
Dororo is really amazing, I love their grip on atmosphere and action. It's so cool that the show has never bored me until now. I pray for it to stay as amazing.

Could it be, that season 2 is even better than season one? I'm just blown away by it.

2 amazing shows this season, I feel like I'm dreaming. All of 2017 and 2018 was overall kinda lukewarm for me, so this is soothing my soul.

Oh yeah, I still need to catch up to JojoV.

After 2+ episodes of everything, time to pass a first judgement on the current season.

The losers at the moment are Boogiepop (so very chuuni) and Promised Neverland (talk no jutsu), which at best get put on the backlog for a thin season; and I'm not sure about KemoFure 2, which is so far being a cargo-cult version of the original. But then the original didn't really spark until episode 3, so this one is still on probation.

Endro~! has been a great surprise : I think it's the first time I've actually laughed out loud (rather than merely grinned) at an anime -- even if the laughter has been at the old fashioned D&D jokes (I wonder -- will they ever encounter a gazebo?). Also above expectation (but in this case, very low expectation), Girly Air Force, which has so far managed to avoid an oh-so-hilarious encounter between the MC's not-girlfriend and the airplane-girl : so this one is actually on probation/acting as a makeweight.

Grimm's Notes rates "mostly harmless", but is competently enough done to rate continuing makeweight status.

On the positive side, He and His Cat is delivering all that one might expect from a cat-centric series; Price of Smiles hasn't had too much mecha action as yet, but neither is it being silly politics; and MGSO Asuka is being that 80s action movie with magical girl decals that one might expect.

And what's wrong with being Chuuni? Don't you like holding the fate of the world in right hand while your left holds the power of the moon?

When else do dark robot Shoguns with evil eyes get to make their debut? If not now, WHEN?!?

I'm not sure about KemoFure 2, which is so far being a cargo-cult version of the original.

Unpack that for me; you're saying people unrelated to the first production, looked at it, misunderstood it, and created a superficial clone with substandard material?

When it's the so-edgy-it-cuts-itself "Ecstasy aka Darks" kind. Dark robot Shoguns vs the power of the moon (or even just the fan-service eruptions of Index III) would be more fun than making statements about snow in April as if they were profound.

Pretty much that.

There's a long and sordid tale about what happened after the first series turned a low-budget advert for a dying mobage into a surprise hit; and what we have is not a continuation (KemoFure : Beyond Japari Park). So far it has been much of a retread of the original with mostly new Friends (but also the unexplained appearance of Serval, who has vague memories of meeting Bag sometime in the past), and another, different, surprise human, Borborygm, who is probably a boy.
