So, I finished ClassicaLoid S1 which suddenly went from larks about fried mandarins or brewing the perfect cup of coffee to "Suddenly, *ahem* Instrumentality..." and "Suddenly, LOL!aliens..." in a sudden burst of uncharacteristic escalation. Being a not-too-serious sit-com, it actually took these developments in its stride, unlike certain other, more recent, series.

Talking of more recent series, from the summer season, I tried Planet With, but after two episodes it was plain that it was not only LOL!aliens again (including our MC and his adopters), but also yet another of these series where my ideological sympathies seem to lie with one of the antagonist groups (the apparent humans).

And talking of coffee, the only summer series I'm still watching has been the rather disappointing Encouragement of Climb S3, where it seems that the girls definitely need some firmer encouragement than they've been getting to date, because there's been very little in the way of climb so far.

Also, in the background, about 2/3 the way through Majestic Prince, which is being a decent enough not!Gundam. And another data-point to suggest that Hiraiface has now become the badge of the superior mecha series, having burned its bad karma with Seed/Seed Destiny.

Having finished Free! (which was far better than I expected it to be; good intimacy there), I have begun a rewatch of Fate/Zero. Even better the second time, after having seen Fate/Stay Night, as well as Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. Still, of all three, Fate/Zero is definitely my favourite.

Episode 6  SPOILER: Show
Image

This shot is great for a few reasons. For one, Gil's hand is by Kirei's cock. That's one. He stimulates him, to bring out his inner bliss and happiness. It lies hidden within (as manual stimulation brings out the seed).

Secondly, Gil drinking the wine is, among other things, foreshadowing to his drinking of the Grail's wine. For the fluid that comes from the Grail is of a similar red colour. In this shot, if you look at it a certain way, it really is Gil proposing to Kirei that the two of them win the Grail together.

Thirdly, the wineglass is the grail is the aforementioned (from my previous watches) repository of blood sacrifice of the Servants. As a repository, it has yonic meaning, and as such, serves as a "vessel" for Kirei's endeavours, and desires. A goal for him to work towards, that he can put everything he has and is into. After all, that's what Risei said, that Kirei could use a project to help him get over the death of Mrs. Kirei. If you remember, of course, Gilgamesh has no real reason to sample Kirei's wine for its own sake. We know from the banquet scene that he can summon wine of his own storehouse from Gate of Babylon. The only reason for him to do otherwise here, is because he specifically wanted to know how Kirei ticked. And to gain a more intimate knowledge of how this man's mind worked, have some fun, and maybe use him to win the Grail.

One other thing, by the way, that runs throughout F/Z from almost the very beginning of the show, is Kirei's obsession with Kerry.
He sees Kerry as a mirror of himself, and Kerry does reciprocate to an extent.
Much can be written on the relationship between those two.
How each one views themselves, and views the other in light of themselves.

Kyoko's Melons: Currently being completely rewritten, so... if anyone liked it so far, great. I did too. But... not enough. ;)

Is this your first full rewatch of it? The first time I watched it I really liked it, but then with my rewatch it became a favorite of mine. That Joy Division line is still one of my favorites in anime. It's such a nice length too; it's longish but it never gets boring and you never really feel lost like with a Gundam series.

Yes, actually; I've dipped into Eureka SeveN various times, but not gone through from end to end as I am now (last episode in a few minutes!). After the end I will watch the short series of stills showing life a year later, which I think came from a pachinko game but was also broadcast, and the alternate ending I've not seen before which was broadcast in the run-up to the release of AO (which I will not be watching again) - it uses a new script, but recycles animation without having anything newly animated, I believe.

I agree it stands up well. The love story and the adolescent trials and tribulations are pretty obvious, but they are well handled and sympathetic. The timing and pacing of the reveals about the nature of the Scub Coral are also nicely done (such a contrast to Darling in the FranXX). The last several episodes I keep finding myself thinking that what's happening must be the final dénouement, but then we learn there's yet another stage before the ending - but I guess that keeps the tension up.

One of the most-used pieces in the soundtrack is largely a clone of "There's a place for us" from West Side Story; I wonder if they got permission - it's certainly closer than some copies of things which got major damages in court! It seems curiously appropriate, though.

I didn't like Free! - no particular reason that I recall now, but I think it just bored me.

Next I will be following you by starting on Fate/Zero; I've not seen any of the Fate series before.

I'm just curious, which song are you referring to?
I'm listening to that song from West Side Story for the first time in my life. I don't remember any piece of music in Eureka Seven that resembles "There's a place for us".

Episode 6 of Tenchi Muyo OVA. Because I have seen it millions of times, it didn't leave much effect on me until I saw the credits and really studied the images that I can't believe it took me until today to figure out they were recaps of the first six episodes in drawing form. I am so slow!!!

Cowboy Bebop episode 24

As much as I wish that Ed and Ein hadn't left the Bebop permanently to follow Ed's deadbeat dad, it was such a moment that hit in the feels as well as Faye rediscovering her past as well but having no home to go to. :sniffle: The use of the song "Call Me Call Me" by Steve Conte as the tragedy of knowing it's the beginning of the end for the Bebop crew as they were may not have gotten me to cry but it did it's job in giving an emotional sendoff to our Radical Edward.

This scene got me every time. I'm still salty about the time Hope Chapman said {REDACTED}. That sticked in my brain and destroyed the scene forever for me.

Well, Majestic Prince was another "Japan doesn't into endings"; the down-to-the-wire final battle ended in the closing seconds of the last episode but one, but the final episode was just filler/side-story/omake rather than being any sort of epilogue. Otherwise a generally good series, apart from a few howlers in the closing episodes "If you get in your [Mobile Suit] and go out there, you could die!" -- well, no shit, Sherlock, it's a battlefield out there; and "[Character], withdraw now!" -- well, the guy he's going toe-to-toe with might have an opinion about the feasibility of following that order.

Bonus point, though, for the character who could blend in quite happily with the Nines (boring hair colour and battle-rage aside).

Meanwhile -- DP Flash OVA2 is much weaker than OVA1 (though I can appreciate some of the parodies more this time around), and OVA3 weaker still (and not improved by knowing more about anime tics in general since the first time I watched it); Shiki picked up a bit a few episodes after I left it the first time, but is not one for binge-watching; re-watching Ghost Hound, knowing that it all falls apart at the end, but the first episodes are so strikingly and eerily atmospheric; and Sengoku Basara is just plai.. PUT YER GUNS ON LET'S PARTY!

Caught Night is Short, Walk on Girl in the theatres last night. It was packed with people, I was like wtf? Anyway, the movie was a lot of fun; the animation was beautiful and there were a lot of good jokes. Obviously it was a bit like The Tatami Galaxy, but this one focuses more on the girl, and I thought this one worked better. Too soon to tell, but this might be my favorite Yuasa after the great Ping Pong: The Animation . Check the flick out when ya get a chance, egf!

I am well aware that people have some pretty strong opinions about the show. Maybe going in with very low expectations helped a lot, but honestly, up until the last episode, I was asking myself "So when exactly does this show go off the rails?". Third act was a bit of a stretch, but I genuinely enjoyed the whole thing.

Mid-season report. Only watching a handful of titles with any interest, the rest are just background noise during exercises:

Encouragement of Climb season 3. As Mr.Tines pointed out- there has been less climbing going on with the show lately, but far worse is the reduced presence of Kaede.
That said- I’m enjoying the show for Aoi’s growth and the little hiccups with her friendship with Hinata. They bicker a lot and it feels natural and endearing.
Image
The rubber-jaw animation of episode two thankfully turned out to be a one-off.

Aoi wants to get stronger for a second go at Fuji; she isn’t going to join a gym, so she goes about it in the CGDCT way: going to Karaoke with classmates. i.e. doing things she hasn’t done before/ doesn’t normally have the courage to do. Character building.

Overlord season 3. The most recent episode (7) really pushed the limits of how far one can… root for the denizens of the Tomb of Nazarick when some of them happily torture captives. Off-screen, thankfully.
Still- it’s always a pleasure watching Madhouse bring the varied, colourful characters to life.

View Original PostBlockio wrote:After three very... mixed... episodes, How not to summon a Demon Lord finally convinced me that it is well worth my time.

What convinced you? The big ones or the little ones?
This is the season’s guilty pleasure for me. Episode 8 let us know that despite Diablo’s overpowered status, he is not invincible. So there may yet be something resembling tension that may crop up in the show at some point. In the meantime I’m happy to watch Shera bouncing around between press-ups.

*deep sigh* Well, it was quite the journey but i am finally done with Cowboy Bebop the TV series! Viewed the final episode recently and it pulled all the stops in tragedy and euphoria. Spike losing the woman he loves and everyone else close to him from the past is a bummer but him saying his goodbyes to what remains of the Bebop crew were all extremely emotional. And that final battle between Spike and Vicious, however short it was, still was one for the record books as dramatic in tone and kickass in it's outcome. The finishing touch was that wonderful outro "Blue" with Mai Yamane sounding melancholy yet optimistic as the final shot ascends all the way to space to see that star fade away... :sniffle:

I took a gander at the first episode of Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas on Netflix and I got to say I am impressed enough to keep going.

I saw it English dubbed and I could've sworn I heard Michelle Ruff's unmistakable voice when Pandora spoke but I was wrong, I checked ANN and it was revealed to be Cristina Vee! Impressive feat of Cristina to pull off sounding so much like Michelle that if I didn't confirm it I wouldn't have believed it. ^_^

Lupin III Part V

Things just got highly introspective. Out of nowhere, a credible examination of Lupin and Goeomon's relationship has shown up.
I'm only sad they didn't develop this more deliberately. There were like, 3 filler episodes in this season, plenty of time to do it in, yet this all really only started rolling the previous episode.

High Score Girl

This series single-handily showed me how arcades were so beloved. I'm old enough to remember Street Fighter II coming out, but not really the arcade scene that built around it.

Animation is cells-over-3d, and can be wonky as f*** though. People can just turn slightly, and you swear they just transformed into something that falls into an uncanny pit.

Overlord Season 3

Ains-sama's master plan (that he totally had all along) is coming together nicely.

I haven't read ahead, but I'm starting to suspect that his minion is playing him.

Gundam Build Divers.

Seriously, take a F******* poll!

I guarantee you that these dorks would gladly risk their game lives if they get to try & save a cute girl in the process; and it's not like you couldn't remake the world elsewhere.
