I've being watching KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!. The first season was really wonderful - combining generous humour with greatly flawed but relatable characters, especially the MC, Kazuma Satou, in silly but fun situations.

Sadly, season two is turning out to be a huge letdown. The story-line has become puerile and arbitrary, and the art is dreadful - especially the way that Kazuma has gone completely off model. And it's not just rushing the episodes, either - the OP is horrifyingly bad from the start. As it's so short (10 eps per season) I may finish it up to give it a chance, but I don't expect to think any better of it by the end.

Well of course. But I don't subscribe to the idea that happiness necessarily weakens a story.

Also watching Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

I loved that one - especially the slightly pastel art. I suppose that effectively KonoSuba started as its wacky cousin.

They're not making an anime that's going to change the world or anything, but the show comes across like some nice fun pop song; don't have to think about it too much to enjoy it. The idea of a model builder getting a chance to build mechs is pretty cool, though I'm not quite sure why they made the MC look like a girl.

The lack of world building just keeps pressing in my mind. They've revealed the robots aren't simply magic-animated golems, but suits of armor powered by a generator. My question then is; why don't you use these generators for powering anything else? Like... idk... lighting?

The onset of plot in episode 4 has made things more interesting, but bland characterization gets in the way of it. The Marquis suspecting a child of under-handed motives seems a little much; it would have made more sense if he thought the kid was being used by someone.

I loved Konosuba season 2. Found it a lot better and more consistently funny than season 1 was, which had some great moments but overall I was somewhat lukewarm on.

(Also, both Madoka endings are unparalleled masterpieces!)

Summer, so not much in the way of anime getting watched.

I did however get around to the third Washio Sumi movie. It's a competent adaptation, given that they have to fit almost 1/2 the story into 1/3 of the run-time (allowing for some of it pulled forwards into the previous one), with only one significant SoL scene dropped out. As before, the real changes are in the fights, with Sonoko's mankai matsuri being against a bigger threat than the LN had laid out, to take advantage of the change of medium.

Ghost stories the US dub...I have no words its like being in a weird twilight zone watching this because I heard that US dub team at ADV basically were told they could do what ever they wanted so long as it followed the story in some way. Hence the result is like something you'd see in Avabridged and is really funny in places and comic gold while in others its not due to the disability, homosexual and racist bad taste jokes which might have been fine in the day but feel really out of place now.

^ADV always seemed at their best when doing comedy dubs.

We’ve reached the 3rd/4th episode week of the current season. That means Tines test results are in:

AHO-GIRL. Yoshiko manages to amuse me despite her loudness and annoying behaviour, maybe it’s the 12 minute run time of 4 skits per episode that keeps her tomfoolery from overstaying its welcome.
Unlike some respectable individuals such as Alaska Slim, I have no qualms laughing at comic misogyny.
Result: Pass

In Another World With My Smartphone. Oh joy, yet another one of those reborn in a fantasy world shows.
Bland world, bland character design, bland costume design, passable animation only, no surprises or USPs whatsoever. I can’t help but feel suspicious of this one, it’s so uninspired and by-the-numbers it’s hard to believe.
Not a good idea having the wizard-girl cast “Explosion” magic in the third episode. Just reminds me I could be watching a certain other, much better show.
Result: Fail.

Restaurant to Another World. Thankfully- this isn’t another reborn in a fantasy world show; just a feel-good yarn featuring odd characters stumbling into a restaurant, eating cartoon food and feeling better for having done so.
Pointless, but soothing.
Result: Pass.

Tsuredure Children. 4 episodes in and no blood chocolates yet… not that I understand what that even is.
Another 12-minute show consisting of 4 vignettes per episode; 3 minutes or so is spent on one pair’s awkward little no/romance, then switches to a completely different pair for more of the same, but different.
The short segments mean I haven’t yet been able to memorise any names besides “The couple with the delinquent” or “The couple with the oblivious girl”, which is normally a very bad sign- especially for romantic comedies; but the show does give us a decent little mix of everything each episode; we taste one flavour then move on to the next. Occasionally charming and funny. It works.
Result: Pass.

A Centaur’s Life/ Centaur’s Worries. Can’t look at this show without thinking of the other recent monster girl shows like: Monster Musume (guilty pleasure), Interviews with Monster Girls (innocent pleasure) and My Monster Secret (punishment).
This one leans closest to Interviews the most, but not by a great amount. Characters walk around with wings, horns or the torso of a horse and that’s just normal in this world. Fine, but does it lead to any interesting conversations and amusing situations you can only accomplish with these sorts of colourful characters?
Sadly, no. Not within the first three episodes, anyway.
The greatest use of a Centaur’s unique perspective on life so far has been a brief discussion on personal sanitation. Lovely.
Merfolk wear underpants in this world, because they have a gap between their crotch and tail. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve seen since Asobi ni Ikuyo’s 4 ears.
Result: Fail.

Classroom of the Elite. The characters are hardly fresh; there are plenty of nonchalant /sarcastic male protagonists as well as haughty, loner girls in school dramas like these; but something about Ayanokoji’s half-open eyes tickles me, and maybe I’m just a sucker for the arrogant, unsocial girl gradually opens up over time arc that Suzune is bound to go through.
A little character secret was exposed at the end of episode 3 a lot of people in the comment section claim to have seen coming a mile away. I can honestly say that I didn’t, and I’m glad, because that just made it all the more hilarious.
Giving this one a chance.
Result: Pass.

Gamers. It’s got a blue-eyed pinky in it. I like those.
Result: Pass.

My First Girlfriend is a Gal. An utterly horrendous first episode, offering me no reason whatsoever to root for the male lead or give any clues to what exactly Yukana is thinking. The censorship was a bizarre highlight.
Odd observation,-but this show does fading-to-black too often, and badly.
Want a pleasant toon featuring Gyaru? See Tell me Galko-Chan.
Result: Fail.

Teekyu is back, and it’s about to hit 100 episodes. All’s right with the world.
Result: Pass. Obviously.

Anyone else think this season's offerings are the weakest we've had in a while, or is it just me? And I'm usually much more lenient than the average anime watcher, so I feel like that's saying something. But I did love the first two seasons on the year, and I've already got three shows I'll be watching this Fall( Love Live Sunshine, Kino's Journey(Hell Yes), and March Comes in Like a Lion) so maybe I was bound for a bad season.

I'd chime in on your opinions Chaz, but I haven't watched any of those series. I feel we may have contradicting tastes in annimays. Hope this doesn't mean we can't be friends!

pwhodges wrote:I loved that one - especially the slightly pastel art. I suppose that effectively KonoSuba started as its wacky cousin.

I finished up Grimgar, and yea it was pretty good. I usually don't go for fantasy settings, but the series was played in a pretty cool way. Liked how they didn't really get into how or why they ended up in Grimgar, and the way the characters went about things was something I could see happening if I ended up in some strange place with a bunch of strangers. The art was beautiful, and like I said I really like all of the music. Would be nice to see a continuation of this one, but from my understanding it didn't really sell all that well in Japan.

Also, watched the first two episodes of Zeta Gundam this afternoon with my morning coffee. I watched MSG in February and I thought it was alright, but the first couple episodes of Zeta have me really excited for this one. The animation already seems lightyears ahead of MSG, and I like that I have no clue what's going on. I may have to take this back later, but Kamille is already best Gundam pilot. I very much like his belief in the saying "talk shit, get hit" haha. I can't wait to see who he punches next!
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

Rage of Bahamut S2 hasn't gotten bad yet, if for nothing else, I'm still curious to understand the King's motivations. He casually dispenses with them when talking to the cute dragon girl, but by the look in his eye, he may just be deciding to stop doing that.

The Reflection is a Stan Lee collaborating project, and I hear the story isn't bad, but animation is kind of stiff.

The character designs make me squeamish, but I'll probably check out Made In Abyss, as Digibro is watching, and doesn't seem to hate it.
Sounds like a dungeon crawler/rpg show.

The Konosuba S2 OVA came out for anyone who hasn't seen that yet. I think it's plot is backstory for a villian we saw in S1, but I can't remember.

Isekai Shokudou is oddly absorbing with all its detail on food (though I do skip through a lot, as it drags often); I get the impression that the crew of Shokugeki No Soma worked on it, as it's visually just like the latter, just with virtually no plot or characters to follow (mostly vignettes of watching characters go through a routine or discover the restaurant for the first time). If nothing else, Diana Cavendish's VA turns up as an elf-chick. I could listen to her take the piss out of things all day. :pwnd:

Two other shows: Shoukoku no Altair, and Vatican Kiseki Chousakan, will check out, and report back.

EDIT:

Okay, Shoukoku no Altair is re-imagined history-fantasy, with a Turkish-based nation at the center. It's novel as a premise, and the central conflict isn't bad; a young kid whose become a general/strategist of sorts, whose obsessed with preventing conflict.

The characters feel like they have dimensions; some are pretty predictable, like what would force the good-natured friend to turn traitor, but even the man who wishes for war and opposes the protag at court doesn't seem to be a one-off villain, just someone with varied competing goals.

Some people call "deus ex machina" with what the protag does with his bird (birds?), and... meh, it's more like a one-trick pony. If he solves all his problems with birds, I'd just call it unimaginative.

Regardless, the true struggle of this series is that the animation is pretty rough at times, and the narrative is blunt with transitions. It also doesn't exposit enough; we're told he failed at his job as a Pasha (general) and while I could believe that, we also weren't really told what his responsibilities are.

In 4 episodes, we never see him so much as command a guard--- I was starting to suspect that he was really just some sort of functionary, or someone who was only supposed to advise others about war. When he was punished for his clandestine actions in episode 3 to help his friend, I didn't fully understand what responsibilities he had neglected. What, as Pasha, he was supposed to be doing instead of what he did.

Overall, it's not boring, it's paced well, and the character is neither a mary sue, nor a whiner whose head I want to cave in. I'll give it a few more episodes to see if the narrative quirks work themselves out, or if the series becomes opaque.

Also, watched the first two episodes of Zeta Gundam this afternoon with my morning coffee. I watched MSG in February and I thought it was alright, but the first couple episodes of Zeta have me really excited for this one. ... It's more like "who does he murder next." -o-;

I know that I'm living a double-standard here; I wouldn't blink if the genders were reversed. It just had so much detail, like if the artists themselves were relishing the girl was getting hit...

Watching more, I'm getting desensitized to it, but I'm not sure I like that.

I'm still on my Anime break... I've watched the first Episode of Made in Abyss, though. It's extremely gorgeous. I love everything about it, except for the blatant exposition dialogue. ('Oh, as you know, it's the 600 Meter elevator' and bullshit like that) It's not handled that badly by Made in Abyss, but I've grown so allergic against it, I immediately get annoyed when it pops up. Also, I feel it's weird that that kind of dialogue is there in the first place - after all the production certainly has the props to manage world building without it. Besides from that little pet peeve, it seems amazing.

I've tried watching season two of Rakugo, but after 3 Episodes, I'm not feeling it at all. I don't know why, but all that melodrama feels like a slog to me and the cast feels not nearly as interesting/endearing as in S1. I don't know, if I have changed (still suffering from Anime overdose, lol), or the second season is just that much weaker. I really don't recall S1 being that full of avoidable petty problems.

Also, I'm stoked for the last Kizu part and Owari in August.

In preparation for the upcoming Devilman anime(which looks amazing, ugly flash animation aside) I've decided to watch the first two Devilman OVAs .

Judging the story in these is a bit difficult, seeing as they are missing the final act of the manga, but the parts that they do adapt are great. The first OVA deals with the "birth" of Devilman and the second is mostly devilmen fighting demons. Both are packed with some superbly animated action sequences.
One thing that must be taken into account when watching these are the occasional nonsensical event that moves the story along. You'll know when you see them. If you can't halt your suspension of disbelief these moments may break your experience.

Other than that there are no major problems. It's a gory, violent ride all the way through(brief comedic moments aside).
By the way, Asuka is the best boy.

Quite the wild ride, I suppose.

I think I liked it. But I can't help but worry that I watched it at the wrong age...

I want to get into Devilman but I'm worried given its reputation. Giving it was one of the inspiration for Eva, Berserk, Utena, and pretty much every grimdark anime that came after it. . . How needlessly nihilistic/mean spirited is it?

Also, is this the same Devilman OVA that Sage covered on his YouTube Channel? ( yes, I follow his show.)

Huh... well, having read the manga by now, I can say that the first two OVAs don't even get to the worst(and best, depending on how you see it) parts of the manga. It's a show that delves(much more strongly in the original manga) about what it means to be a demon. You can see were such a train of thought is going...

Without spoiling too much, yeah, it's violent, dark and it isn't trying to make you feel good. Having any kind of hope would defeat the purpose. To determine whether it's message needs all the violence that accompanies it would really be up to each individual.
I personally think that it does serve the story, and I'm greatly enjoying my time with this series(now going through Devilman Lady) but most violence doen't affect me so...

But, as I said before, the first two OVAs don't really get to the worst of it, so maybe give it a shot and see if you enjoy Go Nagais style?

Either way, I've changed my mind. A fantastic show is a fantastic show at any age. And FLCL definitely is fantastic.

Agreed on FLCL. Indeed, it was the second anime I watched, after Eva - I'd seen the Scott Pilgrim movie described as "the poor man's FLCL", and wondered what that was about. Of course, FLCL blows the Scott Pilgrim film out of the water.

As for age, I guess no anime is actually made for 70 yo's, so I have to take what I can get (which is fine by me).

Finished Owarimonogatari Season 2 and I was struck by how some moments impacted me more than they would have had before I watched the Kizumonogatari movies. I wish the movies were released earlier, as several of the best dramatic moments in the series seem to have much more impact if you watched said movies.

This series in particular feels very conclusive. I honestly don't know were the series could go from here, but I know there's plenty more to adapt, which worries me a bit. Hopefully the next entries in the series are just as good as the previous, because they are sure to be adapted soon.

The story will end with Zoku-owarimonogatari, though we've already had the postscript in the form of Hanamonogatari. All the subsequent novels (and the various short stories in various places) are further episodes within the story already told to its end, so while they would be good to have, they are not essential.

"As long as we're all living, and as long as we're all having fun, that should do it, right?" (from: The Eccentric Family )
