Watched Mnemosyne again on a lark. (Saw it first on Netflix whenever it was they were streaming it.) The trashy and super-exploitative elements would normally turn me off, but they are, miraculously, overshadowed by all the things I can't help but love. The biggest problem with this show, IMO, is that there simply isn't enough of it. Six episodes, even double-length ones, barely tap into the potential of the characters and world, and don't give the plot enough time to build up from its humble beginnings (two immortal women who pass the time as private investigators -- and their dog, let's not forget the dog) to the delightfully WTF destination (angels and castles and Norse trees made of moaning naked chicks, oh my). The world-building is top notch, but the giant time skips between episodes (starts in early 1990s and ends in 2055) have a rather jarring effect that make one wish the whole enterprise would slow down a bit. Anyway, worth a look if you can stomach the over-the-top use of sex and violence (often in conjunction; the ending sequence gave me Event Horizon flashbacks).

Currently slightly more than halfway through RahXephon. The WTF levels have reached critical mass and I wish I'd been taking notes throughout (difficult, though, when you're watching a show with your partner!). So far it feels like a nice, solidly constructed show and I look forward to the rest. The Eva jokes come fast and easy, but, fear not, it's all in good fun. I don't get caught up on surface-level similarities and bellow "rip-off!" until it loses all meaning. What the show is aiming for and accomplishing on its own merits is far more interesting. Stay tuned ("tuned", hah hah, get it?!) for my impressions on the whole thing, which I'll likely revive an RX thread to post.

LoGH to episode 32; and it's getting to be more like Lex Luthor's Galactic Scheming. This is into Book 3 now (Book 2 running to about episode 28).

I can find no argument against watching Kemono Friends. However, I can find no argument in favour of it either, and there are many anime with a more substantial claim on my time than this. Plonk.

I can give you one: in addition to being cute it is also clever, both in its worldbuilding and its depiction of the various animal friends and their capabilities. Most impressive is its depiction of Kaban, who manages to be clever without either being a genius or making the other animals look like simpletons. It takes a few episodes for this to sink in, but once it does the rest of the ride is pretty remarkable.

"Shindo, you no longer have to conform to gravity"

Wha-- oh, we can fly? AWESOME!

"Shindo, you no longer have to breathe."

We can go underwater now, or into space? Righteous!

"Shindo, you no longer have use for your penis."

...Uh, you mean--

"You will no longer have to urinate"

Ohhh, okay, that---

"Or, as you say, 'have sex' "

DAM-- oh wait, you mean we can still if we want t--

"Dame"

DAMMIT! The ladies are lining up and you tell me that now?!?

"Shindo, It is the Right Answer."

Yeah, and why couldn't that answer wait until the week after I finally got the Stewardess' phone number? I WAITED A MOFO MONTH FOR THIS!

SPOILER: Show
The scary part is, due to that discussion Shindo had with his Mom, I may not be far off here.

From what I've read about it's basically a kid-friendly Planet of the Apes. It's about a human being in a world of anthropomorphic animals trying to find out how the animals became humanoid.

Today I broke a nearly 2-year dry spell of not watching any new anime, by trying out Ladies vs. Butlers. I was expecting loads of fanservice, but I wasn't expecting it to be this damn funny. Actually I thought it was going to be boring at first, so I'm pleasantly surprised. Not the best ecchi show I've ever seen, but it makes me laugh out loud, so I'm happy with it. Also the male main character isn't annoying or obnoxious, so the show has that going for it as well. I'll definitely be buying it on blu-ray.

I unfortunately had to visit my parents the other weekend but while I was there I found a bin of dvds in the basement and have been going through quite a nostalgia trip. This thing is packed with OVAs that used to be pretty popular and I'm showing them to my roommate for the first time. So far we've watched Video Girl Ai, Plastic Little and MD Geist I and II. When it actually comes to these shows the quality sure has been varied! I really love Video Girl Ai and think any anime fan should at least give it a shot. Plastic Little looks nice but is pretty forgettable. MD Geist however ... I don't know how it has this reputation as the worst anime ever! I am by no means saying it's a masterpiece but the animation is nice, the mecha designs are actually really good and the plot is funny bad not boring bad. Seriously how can you not giggle at some of this? It's like saying some random Jean Claude Van Damme film is the worst film ever, really? It might not be spectacular but if you're laughing and enjoyed one or two action scenes doesn't that put it over some of the unwatchable trash out there?

Actually, scratch that part. Watched some more and found out it has uncensored loli nudity in it. I won't buy or own anything that's got uncensored nude lolis in it. It's a shame, because other than that it's a pretty entertaining ecchi anime. Damn lolis always ruining everything, they're bad enough when fully clothed. :explode:

RomeoXJuliet.

I'm not crying! Youre. . . You're the one crying! Yes. I admit I teared up a bit when they died! I knew it was going to happen from the beginning, and I still cried! That damn Raise Me Up song by actually being sung in english as it happened didn't help either!

:asuka_sad:

I NEVER CRY! But it was the good bittersweet 'I'm glad they died together' cry, not the bitter 'All is lost' cry I usually get when the main characters die. Damn this anime for making me feel sad! Dammit it for it's emotionally manipulating tactics and storytelling techniques . . .

and bless it because I'm probably going to watch it again.

After an eternity of swearing not to, I've finally decided to cave in and watch Now and Then, Here and There. Partly because just I really wanted to have a new series, and partly because I thought it might be somewhat topical nowadays.
As for how I'm liking it, that's a little more complicated. The setting of the show is amazing, and I really wish they'd spent more time exploring its world as a whole (though I'm only on the fourth episode, so maybe that's going to change). Most of the characters are, admittedly, pretty flat, especially the villain and the girl. But what really sells it is how realistic the people in the future dystopia act.

^I'd like to hear your episode by episode reactions, Squib.

Galko Chan OVA – A 5-minute per episode show gets a 20+ minute OVA? Practically an extra half-season. Nice.

Dragon Ball Super – Goku was throwing punches with the god of destruction (punches which rattled the universe itself) and I’m supposed to believe Krillin is a credible contender to that level of power now?
Always good for a laugh, that Toriyama.

Alice & Zoroku ep 6. Yuck. Too sweet. This is bound to end in tragedy, right?

World End ep 5. I am not of the furry persuasion, but that dog girl was a cutie.

MSG: Iron Blooded Orphans – Reached the end of season one/ep 25.
Can’t pretend the in-universe politics made much sense to me, but the likeable characters and the raw emotion of the battles had me hooked. The gorgeous non-CG mech animations were also a delight.
Certain sources tell me to lower my expectations for season two, because Sunrise.

All righty then. Here's what I thought of the show so far.

Episode 1- We meet our so-called "hero", who I'm just going to call Guy, since he doesn't really accomplish much of anything. Guy decides to climb up on a factory smokestack, as one does, where he meets a bargain-bin Rei Ayanami clone named Lala-Ru. Some Stormtrooper-ish goons on giant robot snakes (yes, really) come and kidnap them and take them to the future, where the economy of the world depends on water. Guy tries to save Lala-ru, knocked down a tunnel and ends up hanging by his shirt on the outside of what turns out to be a huge armored fortress/flying machine.
So far, so good. The protagonist acts pretty much exactly how you'd expect a real kid to if they found themselves in another dimension--that is, with complete and utter shock and horror. It establishes right away that this won't be some Narnia- or Through the Looking-Glass-type story, where the kids adapt quickly to their new surroundings and have magical adventures.

Episode 2: Back to Lala-ru. She's been taken to see the guy in charge of this place, a real douchebag who calls himself King Hamdo. You can tell he's evil because he has a really bad bowl cut. Apparently this giant fortress/flying machine is called "Hellywood" (seriously), and it runs on water. Since Lala-ru happens to be some sort of water goddess, he needs her to power it. But her powers are in a special pendant, which Guy currently has. Hamdo is, unfortunately, probably the show's weakest character. He's supposed to be a stand-in for real-life dictators, but that doesn't really work because real dictators rely more on charisma than fear to subjugate their citizens. Hamdo is just a jerk to everyone, so the metaphor kind of falls flat. I do give the writers credit, though--he just might be the most despicable fictional character I've ever encountered. That takes a special kind of talent.

Episode 3: We go back to Guy in his cell, and he finds out there's a girl in there with him. An American girl, it so happens, named Sarah. Apparently she was kidnapped from the past. Which begs the question of why the people running Hellywood even need Lala-ru as a source of water when they can apparently just do this. Meanwhile, another one of those giant armored fortress-tank-aircraft things approaches Hellywood, and we get a battle scene that features more of those giant robots from earlier. Hellywood wins (by activating what seems to be a Wave Motion Gun, of all things) but King Hamdo is still pissed that he can't find the pendant, and decides to order a full search of the fortress. More of the same from the last episode. Guy is overly cheerful and optimistic, Lala-ru is bargain-bin Rei, Hamdo is an asshole, you get the idea. Luckily, it gets a bit more interesting from here on out.

Episode 4: Guy gets interrogated again, and refuses to say where the pendant is after a truly absurd number of lashes. Another kid, getting impatient, decides to just beat him up until he answers, but then gets shot. Now Guy is forced to join Hellywood's army of child soldiers. We learn that all of the kids in this army used to live in other villages, but were kidnapped by Hellywood. Apparently they'll get to go home "when the war ends", which given the state of things seems unlikely to ever happen. Lala-ru doesn't really do anything important in this episode. This is the last episode I've watched so far, and it looks like it could be the setup for the real main plot of the series.

Overall, so far I'd give NTHT a solid B--it's pretty cool. The landscapes and the designs for the various machines and vehicles are fascinating, even though the characters can be a bit flat at times. The biggest criticism I have, I suppose, is that for all our hero goes on about not giving up hope, the world around him gives a pretty convincing case for doing that. So if you happen to be easily discouraged or disappointed, this is probably not the show for you. If, on the other hand, you think you can handle a show that's a little darker in its outlook than normal (or if you're a fan of Evangelion and are looking for something with a similar tone), by all means watch it.
Just don't say you weren't warned.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

Now for Episode 5 of NTHT: So, Guy gets into a mock battle with another one of the child soldiers from Hellywood (I'm sorry, that name is never not going to be funny). He wins, but because King Hamdo is evil and stuff he still gets punished. Meanwhile two guys wearing Tusken Raider outfits sneak into Hellywood and try to kill Hamdo. Unfortunately, they don't succeed. Guy attacks one since he was holding one of his comrades hostage, but then gets cold feet since he's been a pacifist up to now. Given how much of an asshole Hamdo is, you'd think he wouldn't have a problem with these people. We end with Hamdo ordering his soldiers to head out into the desert to pick up new recruits from nearby village.
This just confirms what we already suspected about Guy: he's a total chicken. Yes, there's something to be said for peaceful negotiation, but when a FUCKING DERANGED LOONY TYRANT is ruling all that's left of humanity, you need to take a stand.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

Well he is the strongest human. Which itself says more about why Master Roshi and Tien get to tag along.

If nothing else, Krillin knows techniques that allow him to fight outside his weight class.

The interesting, though perhaps expected, development was finding out that the Androids could get stronger, and that 17 can now contend with SSGSSB.

Oh, and I've always suspected that Yamcha does with Puar exactly what Master Roshi was doing.

G Gundam up to episode 32 -- finally, the plot starts to creak into motion again after half-a-dozen episodes of tournament arc. The second OP isn't anywhere near as good as the first, though.

Gatchaman Crowds Insight at episode 5 -- and I'm just not feeling it; rather than being Hajime vs the Establishment, Hajime is just part of the Establishment now, and the new characters aren't carrying it. Dropped.
