Anno's Live Action Film Collection is coming out in Blu-Ray this summer
More precisely at 7/20. In 3 discs, it will include the films Love & Pop, Shiki-Jitsu and Cutie Honey. Also, it will include two short films (google translate calls it 'ultraman-something'' and the other film got released in 2002 so who knows what is that), a video called ''27th Tokyo International Film Festival Special'' and a talk event with Anno. This was just announced in Japan, so we will have to wait for a better translation (unless an other member translates the link). In the following link you can see the boxart along with more info (in Japanese though).

Awesome! Finally Jiki Jitsu will be available again in the quality it deserves... Super happy about this announcement.
Then again, I'm really curious, how Love&Pop ends hup which really relishes in the lo-fi atmosphere.
The second short would be the funny one in the subway.Ryusei Kacho(fallen star manager)

Well this is downright cruel irony, for i just received my copy of Shiki Jitsu

Would that be the short where Anno plays an Ultraman?
Someday I hope that we'll be reunited if that is what's destined to be. Perhaps we'll discover that elusive bible. And then we will finally be free!

That one's going to be interesting to watch. There are a few shots or scenes photographed using 16 or 35mm film, and will translate beautifully into an HD format, while the standard definition Mini DV shots will probably still look the way they do. If this film was ever given a theatrical release, it'll probably look closer (if not better) than the theatrical release of the film. I can't wait to see how the different cameras contrast with one another.

Since this is being released by VAP I really wouldn't get your hopes up that it's all properly remastered to the highest standard possible.
They have a horrible, horrible history of just upscaling whatever old existing masters they have lying around for Blu-ray releases, even if it's atrocious analog video masters. The times they've actually gone back and rescanned the master film are disgustingly few.

Oh, poop. If that's the case then I'll just order the Director's Cut version of Love & Pop on DVD instead.

Maybe we're in luck this time and get decent treatments, considering all of those movies have been played for Anno's retrospective quite recently.

Any word on if these are merely upscales of SD sources?

So I still can't find Shiki Jitsu in HD quality, which makes me sad. By now there should have been rips. According to amazon.co.jp reviews the image quality is really good for this one too, so...

Re: Anno's Live Action Film Collection is coming out in Blu-Ray this summer
Has anyone gotten around to buying one of these yet? I've been thinking about getting it but the specific details of the set are kinda vague.
Re: Anno's Live Action Film Collection is coming out in Blu-Ray this summer
I actually own this set, I could shed some light on the specifics.
In terms of contents:
Love & Pop looked really good. A vast majority of the film is shot in 4:3 but a few scenes change aspect ratio, this of course is intentional. It still retains that "low-fi" look whilst still looking discernible and better than it ever has. The Trailers and such look fine too, Return of Ultraman however looks pretty bad but that's the way the source material is, it has no subtitles but was still a fun watch.
Shiki-Jitsu looked amazing, Cutie Honey looks really sharp too, to a degree that you can see the makeup on the characters faces, an effect that inadvertently adds to it. Ryusei-kacho is the only extra to have subtitles but most of it is TV Spots and Music videos anyways, I'd have loved subtitles for the World of Anno video however which is over an hour. Sorry for the haphazard overview.

Alright, I'm buying this collection.
Also, which version of Love & Pop is on the disc? There's the original version that Kino Video released to the US, and then there's an extended de-interlaced version on DVD in Japan.

I'm inclined to say that it's the same version as the SR Ban DVD (KIBF-180) due to the run-time on the BD being 112 mins which would signal it being the extended version.

What region is it, or is it region-free? Cuz the fact that it's got English subtitles is seriously enticing...

If it is region locked, your player should play it just fine, if you're American. If you're European, like me, though - your out of luck.
Still, I didn't know it had English subtitles! Now it's a must buy. The only thing I need to figure out now, is how to get it to play on my European Blu-Ray player. I would greatly appreciate it, if anybody could tell me how to circumvent this issue without resorting to buying a new player.

Re: Anno's Live Action Film Collection is coming out in Blu-Ray this summer
Once I found out this baby had English subtitles I went to go buy a set but could only find it for minimum $170 (plus shipping & handling so really it would cost more than $200). A bit pricy for a Blu-ray. Has anyone seen the set online for a lesser price?
