Anybody here catch Adult Swim airing episode 1 of Alternative (Japanese with English subs) for April Fool's? (I didn't know about it, so yeah.)

What a weird stunt.
How will one be able to watch the show when it comes out?
I realize that I don't watch that much anime at release..
Not everything comes to Crunchyroll right? Lol
Will the episodes be on adult swim online?

Adult Swim/Toonami is on Cartoon Network, that's how FLCL gained a lot of its big following which is why they're airing these new seasons to start with.

If you want to watch season 3 episode 1 of this, you just gotta use your Googles

My spoiler-free thoughts: The subtitles felt weird (odd dialogue choices, some unnatural), and they're apparently official (I'm not sure which company is releasing it when watching the end credits), so we'll see how that goes. The ED credits are fun, though, and the choice of Pillows songs were good.

I wanted to like this since the episode initially felt like FLCL about 17-year old girls, but something definitely felt different despite Haruko being in there. Kinda like a school girl anime with FLCL elements, in a way?

Ultimately, I'm forever confused how the Japanese and U.S. seasons 2 and 3 are reversed, in terms of "what does this mean for the plot?"

I kinda loved FLCL: Alternative Episode 01. I liked the camaraderie between the four girls & I'm liking how (this season at least) seems to be less sexuality teenage angst & more "what the hell am I going to do with my life" angst.
It's certainly not the go-for-broke-we're-using-all-our-goodwill-from-a-mega-hit-like-Evangelion-to-just-fuck-around-and-experiment-for-the-hell-of-it that the original was but it also doesn't feel like an empty rehash. It feels unique.
Plus, I LOVE that end credits animation. So glad I saved the end credits when they were put on Youtube cause Production I.G. has already pulled them.

As for why they can air these in reverse - I really think it's because there is no "overarching plot". When all is said & done FLCL will just be three standalone narratives about teenagers growing up and the weird alien girl who isn't held down by fear & doubts who inadvertently helps them go through a change. I'm thinking nothing that happens in FLCL2 will be a narrative continuation of what happened in the original and nothing that takes place in FLCL3 will be building on 2.

Though if I can put my conspiracy hat on for a second, my two thoughts why they aired an episode from third season instead of the second:

SPOILER: Show
I think FLCL3 will more directly tie into where the characters from the first series have gone while FLCL2 will have little to no connection to the original.

1. It's not the Haruko we know in FLCL2. While she shares the look of the character from FLCL & is listed under the name given to her by Amaro in the first series, in the Japanese release she is not voiced by Mayumi Shintai (her of the awesome nasally voice) but is instead voiced by Rei Ayanami herself, Megumi Hayashibara. It's a different pink haired, vespa loving alien traveller.

2. While it won't heavily play into the emotional narratives the adult who ate spicy soba and knows Haruko is Naota from the first series all grown up now.

I won't be able to watch it. :(
Unofficial streaming sites are illegal here. But I can wait.

@Gendo's Papa: That's an interesting detail about season 2 Haruko.

Could very well be the same person.
We'll know in June.

@Gendo'sPapa: Actually, that's apparently a brand new character like I mentioned back here (who was alluded to in Episode 1 of Alternative, in fact). We see her and in the male alien in the Japanese trailer. Haruko definitely still has Shintani as her seiyuu when we watched that Adult Swim episode.

View Original PostSailor Star Dust wrote:Looks like Raharu is Hayashibara which is cool (the other new "alien's" name is Jinyu, but I didn't catch which seiyuu. If it's Yamadera yet again, I'll... )

One could put on the conspiracy hat and say the season titles are meaningful names—perhaps season 2 and 3 have nothing to do with each other, and 3 is literally an alternate story "in place" of 2! :cringe: (Not that I necessarily believe that, but we'll see.)

I haven't seen anything FLCL sequel related, but if one of the Haruko's is not the one from "season1" maybe they're taking a page out of that FLCL manga.

I think in that Naota comes across another person that looks just like Haruko but she's some space cop looking to aprehend the OG Haruko.

I think the Japanese trailer seemed to be implying that, with the 2 new (female and male) aliens. So maybe they are taking a page of the manga, then. I haven't read it myself....

After watching the first Episode, I'm glad to notice that Alternative does NOT seem like a quick nostalgia cash grab - which sadly, some other franchise extensions happen to be. I feel the staff has a clear understanding of the source material. Knowing that retreating too much old ground will inevitable bring about failure, hey also avoid to slavishly tie themselves to FLCL's superficial signifiers too tightly. They are dedicated to bring their own vision to life and this first Episode is abundant with passion, effort, love and care from new voices in the industry - which is very in the spirit of the original. The dialogue is refreshingly natural, as should be.
At the same time, it lacks the bold vision and mad genius spirit of the original. It feels very save, by the books, like a pretty good and competently made first Episode of a television show.

So yeah, they got some aspects nailed, while failing to fulfill others in the writing department.
The animation isn't too shabby - but overall, offendingly bland compared to its amazing daddy series.

The art design has a very homey, crafted feel - without coming off as too brown. I like the character designs, although they come off wonky due to the lack of shading. Now, you can get away with little shading, if you keep your compositions as 2 dimensional as possible. If you then manage to compose striking poses and layouts, it'll still look good. But Alternative choses to go for a naturalistic presentation, (almost like Jin-Roh, or Omoide PORORO), but doesn't have the chop to pull that off. If you decide to go natural in Anime, you need to shade your damn characters and be able to draw them in unflattering foreshortened positions. Alternative decides to go for "messy" RL depiction, kinda like, some amateur filmed it with a cellphone for YouTube, but without the effort to bring the images close enough to reality this just comes off as wonky.
My second problem is the total lack of visual rhythm. This is the worst offender, as this is the thing that made FLCL feel so amazing.

Amazing Soundtrack tho.

So yeah. They tried, had the right approach, but sadly the staff didn't have the time/resources/know-how to pull off their vision.

I still enjoyed it, though. It's still better than 95% of what's on. But another FLCL, this ain't.

Raharu and Haruko were separate characters with Raharu being Haruko's superior, but they looked exactly the same.

^Well, that's what she claims anyway. "Raharu" shows up in the last three pages claiming to be Haruko's supervisor and says she's on the run looking for Atomsk, leaves Naota a scooter and takes off. It's entirely possible she's lying and rereading it again that's the impression I get, but the manga is even fruitier than the tv show and it happens RIGHT at the end so it's not really followed up on.

It's a strange controversy, indeed, and the first time I've ever been privy to the kind of internet anger and rage I'd always heard about over the years. I made a short audio recording in response to it, but since I promised to keep it on the forum where I posted it, I'll give you a summary of my thoughts:

1. Making a needless cash-in sequel to a cult anime, while understandably a bit of a problem, is not the worst thing in the world. Compared to the series and franchises that drag on for all eternity in the name of making money (hi, Marvel and Disney's Star Wars), it's small potatoes and doesn't merit so much gnashing of teeth.

2. Even if a work has a cynical intent, that doesn't mean it can't be good. Works made with good intentions can still be bad/not very good, and works made with bad intentions can be very good. The Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoons are cynical in their intent (fill in the narrative not-gaps, encourage fans to buy merchandise), but are among the best parts of the entire series.

3. Just because the creator doesn't like what's being done to the thing they made, it doesn't mean those new things are automatically invalid. Creators will disagree with reinterpretations of their work, simply because they and the new creators have different opinions. That's okay, and I don't think people should dismiss the new series because Tsurumaki doesn't see the point in it.

4. Don't use hyperbolic language such as "disgusting" or "scum" when describing cynical cash-grabs. The original Twitter post that kickstarted this mess used terms like "this makes me sick" or "the most disgusting thing I've ever seen". This makes you come off as overdramatic and utterly bereft of perspective (you're talking about a cynical cash-grab, not a John Lasseter-type creep accused of sexual harassment), it encourages others to get similarly hyperbolic, overly passionate or angry in the discussion, and you risk legitimately interesting points being lost in a sea of internet noise.

TL;DR - Give things a chance, and don't use hyperbole.

I'm a little confused at the sudden hostility.

About FLCL, I dunno. I'm not excited for it, but I'm not opposed to it either. I suppose I'll end up watching it, if it's good, great.
I do fear it maybe not being honest, FLCL is how it is because it was very personal to Tsurumaki, this imitates his style (get that impression from the trailers) even though he is not involved. A FLCL by another person would probably look very differently.
However, this still doesn't mean it can't be great.
To me it's like any other film or show, it could potentially be good. I just don't expect it to be as good, but it could surprise us all.

Shot composition looks better than in Alternative. Animation seems very clunky, though. I'm especially baffled by the off-model faces. I'll hold out hope, even if I fear, Progressive and Alternative will be 7/10 across the board, not bad, but still tarnishing the the name of a classic, lol.
Then again, that's just how it is, lol.
At least the staff seems to care and try to make it good.
And Star Overhead is super sweet.
